Sander Berge

Kind of having a gloat as I have been saying for weeks that for better or worse it is too early to judge him....and it still is...
That’s just as daft as those writing him off, as he’s bound to be up and down until he’s really settled in. This thread will bounce back in a week or two with those who don’t think he’s got what we need claiming victory after an off day.

Maybe they're tweaking the formation for next season? 2 CDMs, 1 striker, Fleck and Lunny being told to shoot more.

With a reliable striker that could be very good for us.

We'd be able to to to a flat 3 and a 10 or 3 and 2 up top with one sub too.

Interesting to note the change today to 4-3-1-2 rather than to 5-2-1-2. It seems CWAK are very reluctant to alter the flat 3 in mid.

Sander Berge is comfortably our best DM.

I think he’ll also play more than Norwood next season and until then he’s playing where wilder thinks he can do a job even if he’s slightly less effective.

I can’t see us relying on him to head it, so he’ll be fine.

I think Wilder describes it as a diamond formation, and it's been our go-to formation when we've needed to strengthen the midfield, often by pushing Basham forward.

Interesting that Wilder has said that he will eventually be a sitting deep lying midfielder in his post match interview.

It's what a lot of us suspected.

Indeed, had just opened the thread to pick up on it, definitely wasn’t a surprise to hear. We’ve clearly got a long term plan for him, and in the short term we’re just fitting him into the lineup somewhere to get him more used to us, the elements of our style, and the league. And it doesn’t necessarily mean Norwood is being moved anytime soon either – I think Wilder and Knill might have the next tinkering to the formation planned that involves both in deep roles.

Agree, we could be going to a double pivot. If we are to do it I think we're going to need a new more attacking right midfielder & a striker that can play up top on his own.

McBurnie & Mousset aren't quite there yet, but have the potential to develop into this sort of player. I think we'd have to invest up front.

McBurnie works his bollocks off In every game...But I think I’d prefer a lazy fucker who can score goals. His anticipation and eye for goal is way off.

Berge was excellent today. I reckon he must have been reading the comments about his performances on here cos he really turned it on today. He's still out of position and adapting to the league, its laughable how some people are dying to write him off. He's gonna be a big player for us, these things just take time.

No not at all.......Chris knows what he's doing....... but look to the future....up front our movement was poor Chris will know this I'm not criticizing this I know and looking to the future would I like if I was a young forward to be coached by Keith or Brain Deane of course I would........ who's coaching them now I know Jack Lester but who else and how many are coming through
Worth remembering that academy products selected 3 or4 seasons ago were being selected and coached as part of the league one/championship aspiration. No one e petted Wider to be where he, and the team are now. The Jack Lester leadership will now be focusing on PL aspirations, along with greater long term emphasis from Wider. Today’s recruitment and academy improvements will be geared to a higher level. Just saying like. ;)

Really

He looked much more composed yesterday and as with the rest of the team, best game since the restart!

Wilder said in his post match that he’ll move to the deep midfield role as time goes on. Obviously the long term replacement for Norwood.

Played well today.

A comment which might have come as a surprise to Norwood, who has just signed a new 3 yr deal.

It's good to have 2 players fighting for the position. Offering Norwood a 3 year deal is fairly low risk considering that we'd need to spend a fortune (£22m apparently) to replace him effectively. We don't want to be left with an also ran as backup so having 2 decent players seems a good move to me. Up to Wilder to manage expectations and keep them happy now.

I said earlier in the thread and several time’s on shoutbox over the last few weeks that I thought Sander was brought in for the next season and beyond and for a different set up than he is being used for at moment

I honestly see some formation where, at least away from home, we sit with two holding players in midfield and Fleck or alternative pushed further forward

it’s been disappointing to see “ some “ of our fans writing him off this early into his career

Yes & no. Yes, when it’s vindictive & ill informed, but not when it’s justified.

Our margins as a team between success and failure are paper thin, we have to have our best 11 out every game & they have to be on it.

We haven’t got the resources to pay £20m for players for them not to bed in straight away and make a difference. At that money they have to be stand outs from the get go in my opinion.

We have a finite budget and have to punch above it. Spending all of it on players, whether it is Berge, McB or Mousse that hopefully will improve next season or the season after, is a risk.

He was definitely an 8/10 yesterday, but to get to a 9 he really needs to nail the throw-in move. Get him on throw-in drills with Baldock this week.

Thought Berge did really well yesterday. I may be a bit off here, but I can't shake the feeling of his similarities to Yaya Toure. His stature and gait no doubt have something to do with it, but his presence, technique and composure all reminded me of Toure yesterday. As I say this may be wide of the mark, as I've not seen anyone else suggest the similarities, but the prospect of a Yaya'esq Sander at the center of the team, dictating and breaking up play is mouthwatering.

CWAK etc, will have learned an incredible amount this season about the Prem and what's required to thrive. If they're planning some adjustments to our formation / squad (they undoubtedly are IMO), allowing Berge and others to thrive then, with some shrewd investment throughout the squad, we could be in for a treat new season.

Yeah I think when we criticise Berge we forget he is only 21.

Both need a proper pre-season and new season to see if they can cut it. At the moment its not ideal to judge its such a strange time. Who would have thougth Stevens having a mare performance and McBurnie giving the best performance so far by a mile.

Yep agree with that ! add some extra quality in a number of positions ( obviously need to score more goals ) and we could do ok.
A big window this one in my opinion , we have a good solid base to work from but are in need of more nous.

Yeah I think when we criticise Berge we forget he is only 21.

He’s a kid, he’s just had a move to a new country, he’s just spent months isolated from family, friends and colleagues, and he’s playing in a new system for a new team that’s lost form.

Dead easy that. 99% of us internet wankers would excel in those circumstances.

Indeed - and for me too ,this is what most fans are concerned about.

UTB
Wont this season prove we can spend £20m and let the player bed in over a period of time though?

Berge proves this surly - we are going to stay up, Berge will have bedded in and be in a good position at the start of next season.
