Tend to agree with this, Wilson, O'Connell and Wright don't sound as though they are that type of centre half, and unless Wilder brings someone in soonish we're going to have the same problems that we've had over the last 2 seasons. On the plus side at least CW knows we need a big dominant centre half, which the previous 2 managers seemed oblivious too. Typical that Clough now decides he needs a player like McFadzean, two years too late and while he's at a different club.

For me Wilder has sorted only 1 of 3 (Clarke) of the major problems down the spine of the team. It's a start I suppose but there's still no getting away from the fact we still desperately need a big dominant centre half and a midfield general. It's a worry for me that he might be earmarking Basham for the midfield role.
I think it's one of four, we need a competent keeper just as much as we need a new centre CB or CM.

New goalkeeper is well down the pecking order for me, think on the whole Long did well last season.

I tend to agree with Brian Clough's views on keepers. He thought it was just about the most important position in the team, which is why he bought Shilton when Peter Grummitt was seemingly adequate enough.

I think Long's an average to low league one keeper at best, and we need someone better to build a promotion winning team around, but that said I'd love for him to prove me wrong mate and have a storming season of we don't replace him.

Long needs a decent keeper at the club to improve him. He's young and will improve but at this moment in time we need someone with experience to push Long to the next level. We need a keeper that the defence can rely upon week in week out and if we are honest, our downturn in form usually coincidences with Long having a run in the team, only it lasted all last season !!!

That's been our problem for a few years. We've had a string of poor keepers like Simmonson, Howard and Turner, and I think that we've pushed the likes of Long too much for too long when he wasn't ready for the pressure but there was nobody better.

Instead of having good reliable senior keepers that Long and the other young keepers could look up to and learn from, we've had these 3, and I also wonder about the quality of GK coach Ward.

.
Peter Grummitt never played under Clough. He was Forest's keeper in the 1960s before moving to Wendy in Jan 1970. John Middleton (died last month) was Forest's keeper before Shilton

Jeeeeeeesus we are a mile off still!
I suppose Bash will play if we don't get Morsy, Wilson will start if we don't add at the back, and che and Duffy will be on the flanks if we don't get a winger.
None of which are ideal but for me Long keeping his place is the most depressing.

I've no idea why I said Grummet, a genuine brain fart, but you get the gist Silent. I didn't know Middleton had died by the way, R,I.P. John.

from what I can see it seems mostly speculation, though the guy who said he asked CW at the game other night and he winked and said put a fiver on it was encouraging. Other than that just seems to be all hinging on a facebook like to me.

The thing about that is if I was a manager, that might be something I'd say just for shits and giggles.

We’re not affecting the ability of the club to sign players because we are still willing to play the same price as everybody else,” Bettis added. “But not more.

“We have a figure that we agree with Chris that’s the top line. If it goes beyond that, then there’s a chance you could get better value for money elsewhere.”

Interested to know how this works - do they look at CW's list of targets and agree a ceiling for each one?
When he says "better value for money", what he really means is "cheaper". As a response I'd offer up the old adage: "buy cheap, buy twice".

The way it works is the technical committee run and hide anywhere in Bramall Lane, Wilder counts to 100 and goes looking. If he finds one he can ask them if he can have some money to buy a player. Each tech board member has a limit to how much they can sanction so if he wants a lot of dosh he has to find them all.

Well that's how it works in my head

So if he doesn't find anyone, it's a loan is it.

I often use the same saying but I genuinely believe our policy of paying big wages for ex-mid-table-championship players was poor value for money. Put bluntly, they were, in the main, shite and we shouldn't be paying shite the wages we have been.

I thought we weren't going to chase players for protracted periods anymore.

So why are we fucking around over Morsy?
