But that also depends if you fill in the ratings every game

Individually yes, however the average is obviously crowd-sourced, so providing a decent number of people do, then it's a decent indication.

I think we'd get far more people voting than the number that regularly fill in the player ratings.

I'd normally agree, but do we really think that Billy Sharp isn't in the top 5 players this season? That's what the ratings section suggests...

Depends, are we talking overall performance or goals?

On overall performance, from everyone adding their ratings, he's outside the top 5.

I'll filter them by number of performances at some stage soon, as Hanson is benefiting from a low number of games :)

That's a good point. Everybody would have Billy in the top 2.

Overall performance. He's probably fluactuated more in the eyes of most, but I don't think it's an accurate reflection of impact, contribution and character, which I think need to be factored into considerations of the player of the season. It was similarly a poor marker last season where apparently George Long was runner-up!

It is, however, a more consistent measure of peoples thoughts game per game, given that it is simply an average from all of the ratings given.

I do agree that usually player of the season awards don't actually simply take ratings into consideration, but it's surely a more scientific method than simply voting for one player when the time comes?

Long had 10 games last season where he was the highest rated player of a match.

I've said Sharp before, so I voted Fleck this time. One goal and one assist in the game that officially sent us up.

Yes, but as this forum perfectly shows us year on year, people are not consistent, and don't follow scientific methodology. I think I gave Lafferty an 8 last Saturday – I might have been in an extremely generous mood because of the occasion. Likewise Clarke pissed me off so much against Charlton earlier in the season I suspect the resentment of the dropped points meant I scored him lower than warranted.

Last season's a perfect example. I probably gave Long marks related to his ability last season, I.e A 7 would have been "a 7 for Long". It almost certainly would have been a poorer performance than any 7s I've given Moore this season.

I fully admit to being part of the problem...

Which surely makes simply voting for one person at a specific point in time even worse? :)

My top 5 for the season are probably Sharp, Fleck, Freeman, Coutts, Basham. The top 5 of the forum vote includes each of those 5. The average ratings? Only 2.

Wright tops it, though for me the spell out the team pushes him lower than those that have played throughout. I like Hanson, but if you took a poll of the forum with a simple yes or no of whether he is 3rd place in player of the season I suspect you would get 100% No.

Neither's a perfect situation, but I would rate fans' abilities to judge a season's worth of performances as a whole than their abilities to judge week-to-week using the same criteria for all in each game.

My top 5 wouldn't be miles away from yours either, but I do think that simple voting on it's own is more unfairly skewed than continual voting across the season.

Do you think for example a simple man of the match vote per match, would have resulted in the same 5? when added up?

For a full player of the season, it probably needs weighting by minutes played, goals, assists, key passes etc... which needs a little more work :)

I usually (when it's not been an utterly shit season), do an article on stats from player ratings, which tends to throw up some interesting patterns... one thing I do in that, is take into consideration the number of games played etc... the side bar on ratings currently filters Season Average Rating for players having started 10+ matches... Helping Hanson having only played 12 during a better part of the season I would imagine... then again, some people would suggest that goes to show that he's been one of the better players.

Gone for EBL . He hadn't got a vote bless him !

Sharp starts at -5 with people like foxy about

You need to start using player ratings by the way, I was just looking to compare our ratings, but I can't as you don't appear to have made any :D
