I'm not saying he's shit, but it's a complete punt isn't it.

I'll back him or whoever comes in, I'm just thinking out loud.
I wouldn't say it's a complete punt - he has experience and skills in areas that the board like

Brentford getting Keith Andrews is a punt, this is a rational one imo

The harsh reality is that this version of Wilder is not good enough for the Premier League. Our tepid bath water style of play would have been cut to ribbons, again. I’m not sure how much Wilder was directly responsible for our points tally over and above having much better players than 90% of the league.

We need an identity and build a playing squad around it. If it’s Selles and he likes high intensity, high press, aggressive attacking football, well that sounds like Wilder MK1 to me, so I’d be tentatively happy.

From the AI summary - I didn't paste this because it reads weirdly but:

-- FINAL THOUGHT --

If you’re after a manager who:

  • Plays on the front foot,
  • Works with intensity,
  • Coaches in detail,
  • Develops youth properly,
  • And adapts intelligently…

Then Sellés fits that bill.

If you were to look at this from the POV of the owners and what they DIDN'T like about CW....

In fairness to Wilder, you still have to win those games. We were doing a better job of it than everyone else until late in the season.

Look at clubs like WBA, Watford, Boro, Norwich, Blackburn who often have really good players but can't be consistent.

The football was poor though and there were massive red flags over fitness and inability to play for 90+ minutes.

🧠 Summary:

ClubSeasonPreseason?Context
Southampton2022/23❌ NoMid-season appointment, team already spiralling
Reading2023/24⚠️ Yes*Technically had preseason, but chaos off the pitch
Hull City2024/25❌ NoMid-season arrival, 2 days before first game

🔍 Key Takeaway:

Sellés hasn’t yet had a clean, stable preseason in the English game where he could:
  • Build a squad,
  • Embed his tactical system,
  • Condition players physically,
  • Or establish culture from day one.
All of his appointments so far have been crisis-response gigs — either mid-season firefighting (Southampton, Hull) or a technical preseason amid chaos (Reading).
His true managerial identity — especially over a full season with proper preparation — arguably hasn’t been seen yet in England.

He’s only got 7 feckin weeks including back room staff, buying players etc. with the best will leaving it this late has him and rather team on the back foot.

Nights start getting darker next week

That’s a big positive, stats can be misleading but those eyes that watch their team every single week are not often mislead.
Yep - totally agree with that. The majority of fans tend to put manager performance into the context of squad quality, financial backing, injuries etc.. whereas stats can be very misleading. There’s also an element of “am I enjoying watching my team?”, which is really what it’s all about for us cos we ain’t in it for the glory !

I think he will be a good fit for us. I wanted CW to stay but if he has to go then Selles is a decent replacement imo. Might even have our players lasting more than 60 minutes.... in short, I like the cut of his jib.

2 wins out of 17 at Southampton

First season at Reading they'd have finished 15th if not for the points deduction

2nd season did well but "bottled" getting in the play offs

Won 9 in 28 games with Hull. Other results going for them meant they stayed up last game

He's had one decent season in league 1 then did OK at Hull.

How is he responsible for them 'bottling' the play offs considering as you say he was busy managing 28 games at hull? 😂

Yep, that's how his stats stack up. But it you look at the circumstances, it paints the picture with a different flavour.

My bad thought he'd had 2 full seasons. Makes his record even less convincing. Virtually no track record to speak of.

"If you are a six for us, your position is very clear in a lot of situations. Now it’s for you to develop that position. Sometimes it also happens that, if you are a 10 and we don’t play with a 10, perhaps it’s not your time to play for this team."

Music to my ears.

Except you're trying to shit on him when he's saved 2 teams in absolute dire situations?

Reading finished safe following a deduction. Hull were bottom and collapsing, he kept them up. Give him some actual backing, and allow him to use the data/analytics he has a track record for and then come back to shit on him.

Mental the attitude this fanbase has sometimes 😂

Not trying to shit on him I'm pointing out he's done virtually nothing to justify thinking he's miles better than Wilder.

Round pegs round holes. It's revolutionary.

No one has said he's miles better than Wilder, but as good as Wilder WAS - he isn't now.

Selles is young, has a philosophy and a playstyle to implement, as opposed to Wilders current "fuck it, 1-0 should do and let's just pray they don't score"

Weeeee’re on the march with Selle’s arrrmy we’re not going to Wembley 😬 GULP!!

It's genuinely worrying how nice it is to hear "I will play you where you play best" and not " I'll stick you out wide because fuck it we ball"
