Those of us lucky enough to watch the 1970's United side will have noted the passing this week of Joe South, the composer of "Rose Garden" and part of the Bramall Lane bonhomie of that classic era.

Ten minutes before kick-off, it was played without fail:

" I beg your pardon, I never promised you a rose garden".

My mates at work used to stand at the Kop end of the terrace, and we seemed to be a beacon for one of those blokes who was not quite the full shilling - he sang:

" Ner ner ner PARDON, ner ner ner ner ner ner ner GARDEN"

It became policy at work not to say "good morning", only "PARDON" to be answered with "GARDEN".

Mr. South, I salute you - you never knew it, but you were a Blades legend.

George.

My Dad once told me that the only home League match we lost one season was the only game in which we didn't play Rose Garden before Kick Off. Any truth to this?

Awww. yeah im into rock, metal, even screamo...so definitely not my kind of music...but i still remember getting goosebumps every time they played it at half time in my youth in the 80s. I didn't even know they played it before kick off, my first game was in 1980 and to be honest i very rarely got there before kick off! It's weird how a song can have so much to do with something it has nothing to do with. If that makes any sense.

Raul, you have had the pleasure of travelling in a vehicle with me, after a successful away trip, and been treated to the victorious playlist.

its funny how the team you support shapes your life isnt it ? the laughs from people on the south stand when they played rose garden ,the guy in the south stand who used to shout COME ON YOU RED AND WHITE WIZZZZZZZAAARRRRRRDDDDSSS at quiet stages of the game ,the general humur amongst the fans .being a blade like these lads was something i really aspired to ,maybe i had a rosetinted view on things then but it seems now where just a bunch of misery arses who moan constantly about the manager and players ,the pies and the beer and wonder why we dont enjoy it anymore

feels like weve lost our identity but thats probably kevin mcabes fault

For me, it is the bus driver who stands in front of me on the kop, and is always like a tinderbox ready to go off.

Always remember one spectacular rant notable for its use of industrial strength quantities of weapons grade language aimed towards John Gannon when the kop first opened 20 odd years ago. He is still there, and still goes off on one once in a while. Quite amusing to watch

It's society in general. You can't go to the pub these days without everybody whining about immigrants, celebrities, the price of pork pies and the national debt of outer mongolia. And some pillock wanting a fight cos you grabbed his wifes tits in "the wrong manner" People don't know how to have a laugh anymore. :D

Too young for "Rose Garden" - it was "The only way is Up" by Yazz as we squeezed our way off the Kop past the floodlight at the side of the South Stand after watching Bassett's Blades take another step towards promotion to either Division 2 or 1. Terrible song that always brings back great memories

The other memory of that era (and I'm sure it had been around for generations before me) was the unmistakable aroma of Wards farts on the Kop. The only pint where you could smell the end product before you took your first sip.

TC Harrison taking cars round the pitch at half-time. Although when the Speedway bikes came that was much more entertaining - particularly when they showered the corner of the away-end terrace in cinder track.
