I was at Turf Moor on that day as well, 2ndtenorblade. Ronnie hit a thunderous left footer past Adam Blacklaw straight from the kick off, and did it again 8 monutes later. October 1963. United went top that day, and I remember missing the connecting train in Manchester to get back to Sheffield Victoria. The old man went bonkers when I rolled in at 1 am. The team that day had a few United legends in it - Allchurch, Joe Shaw, Kettleborough, Pace, Summers, Richardson etc. Great memories.

Sorry to hear that. I remember him well.

He scored some spectacular goals during his time with us.

I'm too young to remember him playing but heard a few stories.

Always sad to hear of ex players passing.

R.I.P.

The usual team for the 1961-62 team that finished 5th in the 1st division and reached the quarter finals of the FA Cup and League Cup were

1. Hodgkinson
2. Coldwell
3. G.Shaw
4. Richardson
5. J.Shaw
6. Summers
7. Allchurch
8. Kettleborough/Russell
9. Pace
10. Hodgson
11. Simpson

Hodgy, Richardson, Summers, Allchurch, Russell and Hodgson are still alive so that is half of the team that have departed

My dad was telling my sons that he got Ronnie Simpson's autograph when he was a bit older than they are now.

He said he had the hardest shot of any player he's seen.

The team I grew up with.

One should not really try to compare football of nearly 50 years ago with the game today, but I would guess that every one of those players is better than what we have now.

What memories. Almost enough to make a grown man weep!

I would guess so, given they finished 5th in Division 1, which is our highest finish since the 1920's.

(although if you got the two together via some sort of time machine, the superior fitness of the modern lot might make them the better team)

Remember as a kid waiting on John St to get players' autographs. Out comes Ronnie Simpson complete with fag stuck in his gob, coughing and wheezing away. Great winger but the way he looked to me that day I'm surprised he managed such a good long innings. RIP another Blades legend.

If the old players were playing now they would be as fit as our lot are and visa versa if our lot had played in the 50's they'd not be as fit [assumes the old players were not as fit allegedely] so that argument falls down.

Maybe they really were that much better and had more time and space cus they were good.

I know. The fitness aspect would only be a factor if the two teams played each other without adjusting for era. But I don't think there's much doubt that the general fitness level of players has improved since 1962. The game is much faster, players are bigger and stronger as a rule, and people cover more ground. Of course, if you took the 1960's players and gave them a moderm training regimen it's likely they'd be better than the current team.
