I'm not too sure anymore
Robson has hinted that he may sell players in January, and hopes to add a creative midfield player

He wants to freshen things up by selling players

Who would he sell though, can he sell himself ;)

If we received a decent offer for Beattie then I'd be tempted to take it - we could get 2 or maybe 3 good players for other areas if Robbo can presuade them to join.

Then who's gonna be in his role hitting the goals?

I really don't understand why many people seem to want to sell Beattie, we've been crying out for a 20 goal a season striker and someone who brings more to the side than just goals/a target. Now we've got it, everyone wants to cash in and go back to moaning that we haven't got it.

Don't get me wrong, we have a wealth of talent up front, but why sell one of the best parts of it if we don't need to?

My main concern with keeping Beattie is his wages. If he is on say 35k a week, its a lot of money for a prem team never mind one that isn't getting the income of these clubs.

I'm happy to keep him, but if a offer of £6 million comes in, then I see no problem in him going. This money can go towards the building up of the rest of the team.

If we need to raise money in order to buy midfielders fair enough, but the best way of building and getting back in the Premiership is keeping our best players.

From the boards past actions, I trust them to have not put us in a position where Beatties wages will cripple the club.

I haven't been "crying out" for a 20 goal a season striker. I'd much rather have a steady ****** of goals coming from all over the pitch (look at our promotion season) than relying on one key striker (look at Watford last season).

Yeah, we still need the others chipping in big time, but EVERY side needs or wants such a striker. Look at the hassle Warnock used to get for having loads of strikers who scored few. Now we've got one, why is everyone keen to offload him unless we HAVE to?

I don't think it is the case they are keen to offload him, just saying that if circumstances arise that is good for all parties involved then it wouldn't be such a massive deal if he were to leave.

I'm not talking about specifics, talking about people in generally. Many that i've heard often him off.

Anyway according to the mirror:

Sheffield United manager Bryan Robson has insisted striker James Beattie will not be leaving the club during the January transfer window. (Mirror)

I'm not particularly keen to offload him. But for the good of the team, we're overloaded with strikers capable of scoring goals and yet well under-strength with players supplying the strikers.
Don't get me wrong, I'd sooner keep our best players and add to that but if we're gonna have to sell before we buy and the situation arises then it seems like common sense.

I reckon we could raise the neccessary funds for a midfield recruitment drive by selling on Steady and Webber. I like both players but i cannot see either getting enough games to justify keeping such talented individuals at the club.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are both lining up for Palace by the end of January and i dare say they would be a damned good combination for the Eagles.

That would leave us with Hulse and Beatie as the big, 'target' men and Sharp and Shelton the nippy, small strikers. Id expect us to get at least 3 million for the pair to spend on a couple of middies (hopefully this amount will supplemented by the board).

Given that Beattie is apparently an 'untouchable', it's difficult to decide whether not having him in the team would have a positive or a negative effect.

Take away his goals and assists this season from our tally and I think you have your answer :)

It's not as simple as that, is it? Who's to say that the rest of the team wouldn't have played differently - even better - if Beattie hadn't been on the pitch? Perhaps we would have played a system which suited Sharp and he would have scored a hatful. As I said, I don't know; sadly, nor does anyone else so it's an unanswerable question.

Can't really just take those stats in isolation. Got to look at his effect on the team's performance as a whole and also take into consideration that if someone had played in his place - would they have scored more/created more?

Personally I'm happy with his performances over the season and you would imagine that having a prolific striker up front would inspire the team and give them confidence. Either way, it sounds like we'll be keeping him so let's just try and bring in the players we need to get him the chances. I get the feeling that the absence of a midfield general may have been discussed somewhere before

But thats my point, he's the leagues top scorer and chipped in with plenty of other work and assists, why sell him (unless its a ridiculous deal) or drop him? What suggests getting rid/dropping him would improve things?

Maybe take him off when he's tiring, but then again he's statistically our biggest chance of scoring.

That's the only worrying bit for me. Like Matt described him as "untouchable" even for an 89th minute sub.

i think stead will be on his way tbh.

I dont want him to go, but think robson may have had a fall out with him.

norwich away, 1 - 0 down and a sub left and he dosent bring stead on.

happened a few other times. strange really.

Or could it be that Robson is completely inept? Who knows...

Can't see it to be honest, he's played well at every opportunity and doesn't have the temprement to cause controversy/argue with someone, especially his boss.

thats what i thought. but its strange hes sat on the bench week in week out, having done pretty well everytime hes been on.
