Chilling thought SB, your second sentence, but that's life.
View attachment 81279View attachment 81280View attachment 81281Sad news, as always, especially when it's such a good servant to the club as Brien Richardson. I do believe he was the 'asserter' of the team but not in a flamboyant, showy way, more 'a quiet word' or a forceful tackle.
Sad times, a sad day, RIP Brien Richardson, enjoyed watching you play for the Blades.
Anomaly in one of these photos which one?
The only anomaly I can see is the socks of the mascot. Was this v Norwich? He had the same wrong socks for the Everton match!

3rd photo is printed the wrong way round.
That's correct, seems a simple mistake for any one who is not familiar with The Lane.
Another thought maybe 'printscolorsport.co.uk' used the photo without the owners permission and thought a little slight of hand wold help their cause.

I still think the mascot's got the wrong socks as well...!
You are correct also but it was the reverse printing that I eluded to.
I am really grateful for the info on the mascot as I was completely wrong about the photo of Ces and mascot running out the tunnel.
When I first came across the photo several months ago, I deduced that the mascot didn't have red and white stripes on but blue. I based this on around 68years experience that in black and white photos royal blue shows as a light grey against blood red which shows almost black.
Added to the fact he's wearing HOOPED socks and the confusing detail the shirt has a white V neck I reckoned he must be with SWFC. As a kid he may also have got confused and in his eagerness ran out with the wrong team.
Maybe his shirt was a lighter red like Stokes which also had a white V at the time.
His mother deserves full marks for effort and it must have been a life time memory for the lad, wonder, does he post on here?
I wasn't at the game playing at that time.

You may be interested in a few of my pictures from the old scrapbooks. There are not many of him in action (his role was not photogenic), but the first one of him on the pitch with a dislocated elbow at Millmoor, playing on almost to the end, is typical. The second photo shows him 10 days later, just before the 6th round v Wednesday, prepared to go through the pain barrier. The others are all family photos - for some reason, he always seemed to be the one featuring in the build-up to big matches.

I knew his son Ian, he was a year older than me, but I knew Tracey as she 'knocked about' with our 'crowd' in the 70's.
Used to go to their house at Wadsley Bridge!
Last I heard was that she was working as a nurse in Sheffield.
Great scrapbook photos 👍

I had completely forgotten we had mascots at the time. The lad in the pictures was presumably mascot for that Cup run. I wonder how he was chosen . There probably wouldn't have been full kit in kids' sizes, which I guess is why he was in the wrong ones.

I was 18/19 in '60-'61and cannot remember kids stripped football shirts or any at all. Even adults stripped were few and far between. I do remember seeing a Red/White stripped kids shirt when a kid. Material was knitted on a looms so there was a row between the stripes that was red knitted into white. I didn't get it, but cannot remember if it was because I didn't like the effect of the stripes. Probably the reason was clothes were rationed, as you'll remember, and more needy things to use coupons on.
Wednesday always seemed to have mascots throughout the 50's, where as blades never did or maybe almost never did, another point in my thinking of the Everton photo
Thanks again HBT always nice to fit in another piece of the Blades jig-saw. 🙂

Found out yesterday that I've been working for years with Brian's daughter, but never knew until she mentioned that her dad used to be a footballer. Oddly enough most of his family are actually Wednesday fans.

R.I.P. Very sad news about one of members of my first Blades great team. What would we give now for a 100% committed tough tackling, no nonsense right wing back now, called a right half then of course. Hard and fair. Part of a great defence.

Not noticed any posts from you for a while XM, you been keeping OK ?

I'll never forget him once sprinting past me on John Street with boots over his shoulder and fag in his mouth, with about 30 minutes to kick-off. He probably got a rollicking from John Harris before putting in his usual tough no-nonsense performance. Richardson, Shaw, Summers- what a combo; thanks for the memories.

Great photos; thanks for the memories. Me and a couple of mates wagged off school and met in Pond Street to go to Rotherham for that Wednesday afternoon match on 2nd March (no floodlights at Millmoor back then). Standing behind the goal and wondering when the next train might be coming through was a bit strange ( what was that bloody signal doing there?! ) Drab match on a mudheap... 0-0

View attachment 81442View attachment 81443View attachment 81444View attachment 81445View attachment 81446These pictures are amazing I am Brian’s grandson Luke Richardson and Ian is my father. I was showing my 6 year old son pictures of his great father and stumbled across these. My parents did a scrapbook years but I haven’t seen these before.

Thanks for posting that. It has made my day! As you must know, your grandfather was an integral part of a team that was iconic for all Blades going to matches in the late 50s and early 60s. We could recite the names of the back 6 without thinking about it. Brian Richardson was not the most talented ( that is not meant as an insult), but fitted in perfectly with his team-mates; in particular with a ball-playing centre-half (Joe Shaw) beside him, he did a lot of the less glamorous work in breaking up opponents’ attacks. His work-rate was phenomenal, and he had a cool haircut (which I only ditched when the Beatles came along🤣). I will have a look through the scrapbooks and see if I can find some more photos. I suspect there aren’t; the match photographers generally sat behind the goals and tended to take pictures of goal scorers and goalkeepers. Thanks again for the comments.

It’s really wonderful reading the stories from everyone, you all thought of him very highly. I don’t know if you all heard of his dad Bill Richardson was supposedly a talented runner in the 20s. I wish I knew more. I have heard the stories of him playing against Billy Bremner. Different times back then. But there must be something in the genetics, my brother has his UEFA B license went through Ipswich Towns Academy and onto Leyton Orient as Harry Kane was coming through, and now runs his own coaching academy MRFA. I am a golf professional myself living in Texas and the youngest plays cricket to a decent standard too.

If any of you have anymore pictures or stories would be delighted to hear them. I know my dad would be too.

Just saw this and made me laugh, it’s a true story we are all Wednesday fans. Tracey is my Aunty,

As I suspected, I didn’t find any more photos of interest. By coincidence, the photo below was posted today on the ‘Old photos…’ thread, of the celebration of promotion in 1960-61 season. The 11 players were the regulars for the run-in, and it seems in many ways typical that 10 players are clearly visible, and one, Brian Richardson, is mostly hidden. It is an iconic photo, but I am sure neither the photographer nor Brian Richardson planned it that way; but very typical that he was not in the limelight, despite being such a key team player:
