Right Wing Back/Right Centre Back Options

So with the signing of Ben Osborn seemingly close to completion that’s the left side sorted out somewhat, which leaves the RWB/RCB position still in need of strengthening to avoid teams targeting that area in my opinion. Who is realistic and would be a good signing for that area?

Jayden Bogle
Danny Simpson
Mason Holgate (Loan)
Kyle Naughton
Matt Lowton
Todd Kane

The shape Keiron was in the other night and the performance he put in we might not need anothe RWB.

I'd much rather this area be sorted with one signing.

Reece James is everybody's choice but realistically I think we should do what we can to get Mason Holgate.

A lot of come out with Holgate...and I'm guilty of it too.

But this position isn't what we should be spending a great deal of cash on and for what Holgate would cost (I bet Everton would want close to 10m at least), he's not that much better than what we have...if he is at all.

I would use our 2nd Loan for this area if we want to spend the majority of our budget on a striker (hopefully McBurnie £15m)

I’ve got a nagging feeling we’re not going to get another in for that area. LCB maybe, but I have a suspicion that we won’t get another righty. Tbh the Jags at RCB appearance on Friday threw me a bit – I’d assumed that he was replacing Stearman as back up to Egan there, and that Stearman would be sold to someone that will play him regularly.

There wasn’t a lot in Baldock and Freeman a year ago, and while Freeman started the player in better form, Baldock obviously ended it much better. Again on Friday, they were closer in performance than they’ve been lately. My concern then is that we’ll just go with the two for that position, which I think tbh would be a missed opportunity to strengthen. I would on balance keep Baldock and significantly upgrade Freeman, as while Freeman is the better of the two going forward he’s not got the defensive qualities or general athleticism that Baldock possesses. I also think it’s probably more likely we train Baldock to becoming better in the final third than train Freeman how to defender better or be fitter.

I agree with all of that. It might still turn out to be the case the Jags is a replacement for Stearman but perhaps Wilder is focussing on what he HAS to do first and any will then focus on some of things he might want to do later in the window or in January.

It seems he still has the 2nd prem loan available and there are good suggestions for that in this position above. Depends entirely on the permanent recruitment in the next 10 days or so

I’m more concerned with cover for LCB at the moment. There’s only Kean Bryan (or Stevens like at stages last season) who can cover JOC.

I'd say that the two wing back positions are extremely important to the way we play. If we're unable to get the wing backs up and down the wings and putting quality into the strikers, then our system, in its current form will struggle.

Personally i think that with Baldocks pace and Freeman as back up, we'll not need to spend so much on a RWB as they are already at the club. Both players seem to use a lot of energy and whilst being superfit, they do need recovery time

Stevens is a slightly different breed down the left, I'd like to know if he puts as many sprints in down that side, he certainly doesn't seem to get quite as high up the field as the RWB and he does seem to stick to the left, whereas the RWB have roamed a little more centrally and even appeared on the left at times during attacking play. It appears that the slower build ups happen down the left, whereas down the right we attack more at pace, putting balls into the space for the RWB to attack.

(although Blades Analytics and Beans may see this differently with the stats and heat maps)

As Blade67 said earlier, we have Baldock, Freeman, Bash, Jags there. Ok, it's prem football so of course we could do with improving this area, but I think any major resources available should go towards a big centre forward. McBurnie is the common name, but it wouldn't surprise me if Tufty pulled somebody else, totally off the radar, out of the hat.
