Happen so, but they need to show in training that they deserve to be in the matchday squad. Injuries aside, if they can`t do that after a period of time, then they are obviously not good enough for a team which the manager is constantly trying to improve.

Wilder said Washington had impressed him in training ?
Washington’s started one game ?

Not saying he’s the next Ronaldo but you can’t slag a player off when there on the bench and might come on for ten minutes
same goes for Marvin Johnson the guys played about 30 minutes

As much as they probably weren’t good enough . Neither Holmes carruthers or Leonard ever got a proper run in the team so I don’t think it’s totally fair to say they weren’t good enough.
They probably weren’t but they weren’t ever given a proper chance imo
I think Carruthers got a fair crack at the beginning of last season, replaced Duffy in the team if I remember rightly, but made too many mistakes and looked a bit short of Championship level. Agree the other two got nowhere near enough of a run in the team to draw any criticism from me.
We seem to have been trying to sign Duffy replacements for ages now! O'Shea, Carruthers, Holmes, Woodburn, Dowell off the top of my head. Jury's out on Dowell but we flogged the only one who was actually a decent replacement in Brooks.

They can still be good enough very very easily. They WERE and ARE getting in match day squads so that doesn't really count we just have had players playing excellently in their positions and maybe that's due to them pushing them 100% every single day. Wilder keeps a consistency and the players haven't deserved to be dropped..were 3rd in the league with a bottom 10 budget how can you ring changes every week?

I agree i think dowell is pure quality tho from the few cameos with seen and think he could be starting ahead of duffy soon

Why was it strange? We needed a Duffy backup and he fit the bill: in his 30's, used to play in non league, playing at the peak of his career, high workrate, winger who can play inside, available for cheap.

When he arrived it didn't work out for him. It happens.

Unproven at the level, and little to no resale value. Also quite expensive by our admittedly spendthrift standards. If he cost the rumoured 500k he would have been Wilder's second biggest signing at that point. He was an outlier for all those reasons. I can only really think of Stearman as someone you could compare him with as a signing; yet Stearman was 300k and was proven at the level. They're the only two late 20s early 30s players we've paid good money for. If he was 100-200k or less, he could be put in the same pot as Clarke, Hanson, Wright, Lafferty, Mcgoldrick, Cranie etc. I agree with you that we needed a Duffy back up, we still do unless Dowell fits the bill.

Of course, the best players play. My original point stands. Players who, after months at the club, do not get into the matchday squad may not be good enough if they are unable to displace those who are, injuries aside. If the manager is constantly looking to improve on what we have, then he is looking to find players a cut above those in the matchday squads. Where does that leave those who cannot force their way in to matchday squads ?

I wasn`t slagging off any particular player. Washington received praise and a start at Brentford, probably to use his pace on the break. If he hasn`t started since, then CW/AK do not think he has been the best starting option in subsequent games.

Unproven at this level: we signed Wright, Baldock, Stevens, Henderson, Evans, Leonard and Lundstram off the top of my head who were all unproven at the level they were signed for.

Clarke, Wright, Donaldson, Hanson, etc. All had no resale value.

He wasn't expensive for the Championship, Stearman was 800k, Baldock 500k, Lundstram 500k+, Evans was 750k+ and Leonard was 750k+.

It's my belief that we don't pay significant transfer fees (by our pitiful standards) for players who aren't young and can't develop and appreciate in value. Wright, Mcgoldrick,Donaldson, Hanson, Clarke were all brought in for peanuts or on frees. Stearman was 300k; we paid his contract up. The only players that don't fit this theory are Holmes and Ched Evans, although there are rumours that Evans wasn't brought in through normal procedures.I'm also led to believe the fee was well under 750k, unless we're promoted to the premier league etc.
Leonard and Lee Evans are examples of this theory as are Fleck, O'Connell, Moore, Lavery, Egan, Bryan, Thomas, Henegan,Lundstram, Stevens, Carruthers etc. The bigger fees are paid out for players that can appreciate in value. Our highest transfer fee in Wilder's first season was 300k (Moore, O'Connell, Carruthers); second season Lundstram 700k; third season Egan.Wilder reckons he's already worth double what we paid. It's worth noting that we were in for Freeman and Waghorn this season, who would've tested this theory, alongside the signing of Norwood who is 27 (quite old for a midfielder).
