He ran us ragged until we put Basham in midfield and stopped him.

Two things worry me about that:

  1. Holmes was easily stopped by a more defensive minded midfielder. If he moves to us, he will play against better defensive minded midfielders than Basham in the Championship... so will he have an impact?
  2. Up until Bashams switch to midfield after 20 mins, Fleck and Coutts couldn't handle Holmes. If they can't handle him how are they going to cope with some of the attacking midfielders in the Championship?

You can't use one or two poor attempts on goal in that game to question his quality and EPO. He got 13 goals in 35 games last season, in a poorly performing team, that speaks for itself.

I'm going to have to watch that Charlton game back now. I've read far too much about it not to!

That's a bit of an overreaction to what I said isn't it? Where did I say he was shit? Where did I say Wilder was out of his depth?

If Wilder think's he's good enough then great, he certainly knows more than I do. I'm just saying that: a) I don't think he's any better than what we've got and b) considering his age, what it sounds like he will cost and the fact he's never played above league 1 before I reckon we could do better.

On the note of Wilder being a good judge of players, his record with us is certainly very good but are you suggesting he hasn't got it wrong before?

Blame Karl Robinson for that. He should have changed his gameplan to counter ours. Chris Wilder is just a better manager. Ricky Holmes is only 1 of the 11 players and if the system isn't working, he needs a new plan from his manager.

I'm suggesting that Holmes is a player Wilder knows very well. His 'failures' so far are players he doesn't know as well. If he gets this one wrong, it's a much greater error than Hussey.

I've got no idea if we could do better because I've got no idea of what we are able spend. I thought we'd already 'done better' by signing Carruthers. I don't even know why we're interested in Holmes. I don't even know what formation we'll be playing next season.

And my point is, we're not discussing a player suggestion or a rumour from a tenuous website, we're discussing a player Wilder is trying to sign, a player he's worked with before, so I tend to start with the idea that Wilder is probably right until proven otherwise and, IMHO, commenting on a player based on one or two performances doesn't prove otherwise.

Plus a handful of assists too (6). I imagine if he had played for us last season as opposed to Charlton his goals and assists would've been more than that.

IMHO it must surely be easier to just say End Product Output rather than put EPO in and then explain it in the next line.

I think he would've been outstanding for us last season.

Worth noting that he did miss 11 games through injury though.

I wonder how we would've lined up if we had him and Duffy? Because it's not like Duffy was signed as an alternative to him.

One thing you could say though is that we surely wouldn't have signed Carruthers. It remains to be seen whether that would've been a particularly bad thing. I certainly don't agree with anyone saying we don't need Holmes because we've got Carruthers - their EPO levels are currently worlds apart.

Agree, its something that is worrying me tbh. We've spent the majority of last season playing against teams who have surrendered possession to us and put 10 men behind the ball. We are now going to face teams, who may dominate possession, so the likes of Coutts, Fleck, Freeman and Lafferty will have a lot more work to do without the ball. Fingers crossed they are up to it....
 
We are going up a division, it's natural to worry about our current players stepping up.
One thing to bare in mind though is that through their whole career (to date) Fleck would be classed as a league 1 level player and Hammond could be classesld a Premiership level one.
There's going to be some right shit playing in the Championship, quality will always rise to the top and we have a spine of quality now.

I assume this is why they're trying to sign this Leanard from Southend as I assume he's an athletic tackler. But it makes me wonder how much our attacking footballing game will get lost by having employee more agricultural players

Seems he's a bit more than merely 'agricultural'. Wilder has bought quality in his time at United, does anyone think he's going to change that approach and lose what is already a decent squad of players who clearly respond to the style of football Wilder and Knill have instilled in them? What Wilder is doing is strengthening the team, it really is that simple. Surely that's what all teams do in the close season?

I don't know or can't remember much about Leonard, apart from his belter against Long in the Adkins season. I am taking this signing as an improvement on Basham, when he is asked to go into midfield from what I read from people on here.

I thought he was known for his passing ability and skill as a playmaker. Much more like Coutts than Monty.
