It's all about effective recruitment. Surely the big question should be how the fuck have Wednesday failed given that level of investment? Wilder et al have an eye for players that fit their model, style, tactics and team ethic. I'd rather rely on that than a big budget splashed on names. Huddersfield have shown that shrewd recruitment can trump big spending. I'm appeh to leave it to our management teams shrewdness, which might yet include a biggish fee.

The pigs finished 12th I think under Stuart Gray, before they sacked him for Paddington Bear - Carlos. Its debatable whether the money they've spent has been worth it. I think if you gave Wilder £30M, we probably be in the Europa League!
 
If we have designs on doing more than just surviving then imho we'll need at least a couple of players of Championship pedigree or higher to add to what we have.

It's a lot to expect every player from the bottom two divisions to step up and make an impact.

I fully expect a couple of reputable names or PL loans.
 
So much talk about preferring 'cheap and hungry' over 'expensive mercenaries', it's becoming cliched.

As far as I'm concerned it's very simple - you simply get the best value for money you can, factoring in your budget, what you need and various other considerations.

A £2m signing can represent the same value as a 200k signing, or better. Expensive doesn't mean poor value, and it doesn't necessarily mean high risk.

All signings should have the right attitude - being expensive doesn't mean they won't. In fact having a good attitude probably helped them become expensive in the first place.
It goes without saying that you avoid players you suspect are only after the money and have little desire.

Then there are a few basic rules to follow:

Don't sign anyone on higher wages than everyone else.

Don't allow the average age of the squad to get too high, ensuring you have enough assets and resale value.

Don't spend a big fee on a player over the age of 28.

Don't spend an amount on a player that leaves inadequate funds for the other signings required.

Make sure that at least half of your signings are in for the start of pre season.


Wilder understands all this perfectly.

But I will be disappointed if we try to do it on the cheap. He's earned the right to have a decent budget.
 
The reality is -unlike teams like Newcastle - we can't afford to buy the best of the proven players in the Championship. Buying mediocre, experienced Championship players who have yet to prove themselves will still be expensive and will still come with few guarantees.

Surely the aim has to be, to find the players with the right skills that will enhance our squad and makes us competitive next season. What league and which team a player plays for doesn't always define his ability. Every signing has an element of risk and CW and his team has shown that they can get it right enough times to prove successful. In Wilder we trust.
 
I also don't get the gamble of lower league players as long as you are thirough in who you pick.

Leonard and Holmes, both Player of the Year at their clubs, are already acknowledged by their teammates and supporters as being too good for their current level.

They are being targeted by a team who smashed the division by 100 points.

With the form and capability of the team that finished the season we'd be probably midtable in the league above. Recruiting the best of the remainder of the division is sensible to me.

And affordable.

I still think Wilder will get the required additions. He just seems to prefer players with an upward trajectory that those deemed not wanted in the top flight or having reached their limits.
 
Not bothered where they come from or to an extent what their fees are, but i don't want new players coming in potentially on disproportionate wages to the rest of the squad as this just starts resentment and undoes all the team building that CW has been so keen on building up and which we have clearly benefited from.

I heard Ben Gibson the Boro defender state that the biggest disappointment for him this season was the loss of the dressing room spirit which they lost after going up to the premiership with expensive new comers coming in and the manager losing his job. I think Utd can learn from Boro's mistakes.

I want Utd to cherry pick the lower 2 leagues and pick up the best there is with a mandate being that they have to be a youngish age for resale value with the exception being that they are simply way too good for their existing club/level I. E. Holmes or Stevens.

In an ideal world i would also like to see a couple or so 'proven' championship level players who have the t-shirt probably through the spine of the team and certainly a centre half and perhaps keeper. A proven championship level striker wouldn't go amiss either but they don't come cheap so I'm happy to go with a player with potential on this one if CW rates the lad - he just needs to find the new Brian Deane. No pressure then Mr Wilder!

There really is no quick fix and simple solution, and in most cases a steady and well thought out squad build is a better way to go than assembling a team of players as quickly as possible regardless of the cost. The number of sides who appoint a "branded" manager, or a foreign coach because that's trendy and chuck millions there way on the expectation of getting a promotion is frankly shocking considering the relative number of clubs that succeed from it. You would think they would learn from others mistakes.....but the problem with owners like this is that they think they know it all and they will be different!

I don't think our club couldn't afford to compete with anyone in the division for signing individual players. I believe that if we wanted we could blow £10m on an individual player. But where would that get us really? It would certainly get us a headache from a lopsided and unhappy dressing room! Is Rhodes 20 times better than Sharp?
If Fleck had not signed for us last season and had a similar season for say Bolton as he did us.....would he be a better player than he was for free than now because we would have to pay a few million to sign him from them? Of course not!

So it's not unreasonable to let the club carry on doing what they have done. Scout, put the miles in, make the phone calls do your research and set your limits for players. Its not about how much they cost, it's about getting the right player.

On top of that, it's also about keeping your improving players. A couple of seasons building in that manner and you will start surprising people.
 
Look at the premiership they cherry pick the best championship players. They normally move into premiership and do well.

We are doing the same just on the tier below.

It's not often good players move parallel, a move from Ipswich to us for example isn't a big improvement. If they are good enough they move upwards. Otherwise to get them to move parallel you end up paying 50k a week.

We are cherry picking the best players. Exactly the right thing to do.
 

We should be looking at:

Best in the lower leagues but not paying stupid money for overpriced players.
Looking at the teams who have gone down from the Championship to see if any bargains to be had
Scottish PL
Young loanees from the top flight who will improve a position or add something different.
Keep an ear out in the Northern European direction for a potential bargain

There's no right answer. It's looking at all the available options and deciding what's best for the club.

If this is true then Wendy could offer a higher wage than us, that is if the reported wages of some of their players is to be believed. That might swing it their way, hope not but I'd back Wilder's approach to wages and moving on if it's not acceptable to an interested player.....time will tell of course, but patience and allowing CW to do things his way will serve us well in the long-term.

Man City player going back to the Etihad after next weeks Scottish Cup Final

As good as he is he probably won't get regular first team football at City because he's Patrick Roberts and not Patricio Roberto

Celtic are gonna break the bank to get him to go back there, but if City won't sell or loan him back to Scotland we should try a sneaky loan bid
 
now we have got to the Enda the Stevens Signing now on to Holmes, hopefully we can get this bit of business done as well, and then over the next few weeks the next lot all ready for Chris and Alan to drill them pre-season and take on the championship with style :)

True, but they also have about 10 midfielders. Will he get a game?

Perhaps the Nathan Thomas analogy springs to mind? Could've joined his hometown club. Supports Boro, but chose the Blades. Is it because he has more chance of playing?

Does make you wonder why all of a sudden the pigs appear to be in a different market to the one last season if there's truth in the rumour of course

All good points mate. Who knows what Holmes and his agent (Watson?) will consider as a priority? If they've kept their ear to the ground they'll know which club has a manager who's forward thinking, only offers deals to players who will fit in, who are worthy of the shirt, and whose ability will improve an already exceptional midfield.
