Struggling to think of another player I've seen with similar attributes to Coutts.
Maybe he's not Wilder's kind of player (then neither was Coutts) but if we were to be serious this season we might need to spend some money.

Played 48 games for Fulham last season, but probably did nowt while the other ten took them to the play-offs.
Wilder will probably look elsewhere but in terms of footballing attributes very similar to Coutts.

Kevin McDonald is a great player, composed on the ball, can carve a team apart with a sublime through ball and would be a excellent replacement for Coutts.
But I can’t forget that he walked out on us, the minute he was offered more money he was like a rat up a drain, thinking he was going to a better side at Wolves. So for that reason alone I’d have to say, over my dead body, you woolly haired mercenary Scottish twat !

Much as Coutts has been brilliant McDonald has generally played at a higher level and Wilder doubtless thought Coutts was missing a number of key components when he put him on the transfer list.
I'm biased as McDonald was the best midfielder I'd seen at United for years up until the emergence of Coutts and Fleck last season - and Wilder will very likely look elsewhere - but in terms of that quarterback role and with Wilder's motivational powers he'd be worth a go for me.
Hopefully he'll be bobbins on Tuesday night though...

If you trawl back enough, you'll be able to find quotes of me saying how he's got it technically, but doesn't look like he's fit or can run (during the period before a good pre-season under Wilder).

I won't pretend to have an encylopedic knowledge of every footballer everywhere, but John Fleck dropping deeper and (this is where I feel like Judas) John McGinn filling that role is the best plan B I can come up with.

He had a decent game against Ipswich replacing Coutts and we won the second half tonight.

He isn't coming into a poor side where he needs to make an impact to help turn things around. We've got a great team brimming with confidence and in my opinion our best player in Fleck alongside him. Everything is set up for him to be a success.
