Last week, in the aftermath of the second leg, I spontaneously posted a poll, imaginatively titled 'Sheffield United - Which players should be in the squad for next season?'. It was sporadically advertised on this forum to the tune of 110 responses. Having promised to post the results, which you can just see anyway by clicking on the link again, I am hereby delivering several days too late.

If haven't voted and you want to before you read this, go ahead.

Bear in mind this was before the club announced any contract news or anything about Jose Baxter.

-------------------

31 first team players were listed, including Holt and Steve Davies who were on a loan contract. A few younger players were ignored due to the fact we haven't seen anything of them to speak of, plus De Girolamo because he's sure to leave, plus Scougall because too much beer.

The 110 respondents voted 1696 times, an average of 15.418 players getting the nod, implying that United fans want a brutal cull of half the squad.

6 players tallied 100 votes or more and 90% approval, including two for the future. Another 3 players managed over 80%, way ahead of the rest, making a tidy collection of 9 that seem to be the basis for any squad.

1. John Brayford 97%
2. Chris Basham 96%
= Matt Done 96%
4. Che Adams 95%
5. Jamie Murphy 93%
6. Louis Reed 91%
7. Ryan Flynn 87%
8. Kieron Freeman 82%
9. Bob Harris 81%

Rounding to 15 players the following would make up a retain list for the posters and lurkers of S24SU

10. Mark McNulty 69%
11. Ted Kennedy 65%
12. Steve Davies 62%
13. Paul Coutts 60%
14. Mark Howard 59%
= James Wallace 59%

Of course Steve Davies has now left and the final spot could only be taken by the most divisive player among fans, the median and closest to an even split amongst voters

16. Jose Baxter 51%

Close but no cigar:

17. Florent Cuvelier 46%
18. Harrison McGahey 39%
19. George Long 35%
= Conor Dimaio 35%
= Otis Khan 35%

At least three quarters against them staying:

22. Michael Doyle 22%
23. Jamal Campbell-Ryce 21%
24. Jason Holt 19%
25. Jay McEveley 12%

Over 90% resounding no

26. Craig Alcock 7%
= Michael Higdon 7%
28. Neil Collins 6%
= Ben Davies 6%
= Kieron Wallace 6%
31. Iain Turner 1%

So in conclusion our forum would have the following (plus possibly some kids and Scougall):

GK Howard
RB Brayford
RB Freeman
LB Harris
CB Kennedy
CM Basham
CM Reed
CM Coutts
CM J Wallace
CM Baxter
RW Flynn
LW Adams
LW Murphy
FW Done
FW McNulty

But that's all irrelevant now.

I voted for Basham ;). Was that as relevant as you bringing this up if it is irrelevant?

I know Scouggs is small but....

If I were manager I'd build the side round these key players: Brayford, Reed, Basham, Done, Murphy, Flynn ( full back first stage of season), J.Wallace.

I'd settle for Howard to help keep to budget, he's not our worst player by any means.

I'd spend all my budget on 5 new quality players:

1. a first choice striker to complement Done in a 4-4-2 maybe on loan. plus a quality "back up striker" e.g. Davies.

2. two strong central defenders but still hope Kennedy gets fit. one maybe on loan.

3. a midfield organiser, maybe even a 30+ year old leader with some pedigree. ( if that's supposed to be Coutts he has some improving to do)

I'd reduce the squad to 23 plus development players so 10 existing players would make up the numbers:

Freeman, McEveley, McNulty, Adams, Scougall, Harris, Alcock , Kennedy, Long, Diego.

It's easy to see from the final "support player "list that the five new signings are key to lifting the competitiveness of the squad if we are to challenge for automatic promotion. The rebuilding project needs at least that sort of boost even though we are19 months into it.

Above is a post I did on another thread and the thrust of the poll results is very similar.

You summarise the top 15 players and Clough will need a squad of about 23 plus development players, so including Scougall and keepers Long and Willis takes the list to 18 with 5 new signings needed to get the squad to optimum size. Baxter may or may not be available.

5 new players in the right positions and right calibre will do the trick . What i am hearing , the board is going to give Clough full backing . Although he may have only got say 6 out of 10 for last season all things football team wise ,he has got 10 out of 10 for behind the scenes restructuring , bring back sanity , and stability , football club wise .

The board will have to speculate to accumulate , so lets see what the summer brings , in player recruitment , which will be a barometer of were we are heading , as what we are - a football club and team .

I'm fairly sure Ted Kennedy died a few years ago. Which taking into account Terry Kennedy's injury record makes Ted marginally the least likely Kennedy to feature substantially in next season's first team squad.
Haha. Reckon I can get away with blaming spellcheck?
