Retained List - Biggest overhauls in recent memory

With the talk of season 23/24 Retained list being a major overhaul, I wondered what lists for 'recent' years looked like. Releasing 20+ players in a season isn't as rare as you'd think. The much talked about 2015/16 clear out isn't as large as some at only 21 players. The highest I found was 2003/04 when 27 players were released!

At the moment, without speculating on who might sign new deals and who might be sold, at present until these things happen our definite squad going into the summer is:

Grbic
Robinson
Trusty
Ahmedhodzic
Souza
Hamer
Slimane
Davies
Traore
Brooks
Arblaster
Osula
Brewster

That's 13 players, 9 more needed for a squad of 22.

5 of these may well be Egan, McBurnie, Norrington-Davies, Bogle and Adam Davies, leaving us with 4 more to find. That said, if we are looking to offload Grbic, Slimane, Traore, Anel and Souza then that's another 5 to replace, leaving us with needing to recruit 9 players this summer on top of those potentially signing new deals, which isn't unusual for teams to do.

I can see us struggling to sell Traore, Grbic and Slimane, and they may well leave on season long loans in the hope that they do enough to impress for us to sell them later.

Whatever happens, it's going to be a busy summer with or without a takeover. It's not mission impossible as we have the start of a team already here, though far from perfect.

Just like last season when pre-season was made up of academy players because we had no new signings and everyone else was injured.

I'm still waiting for the annual "we've made mistakes this season, but we'll learn from them" speech from the club which we get every summer.
