I think Jack Archers on Bramall Lane used to sell them, not sure if our original Club Shop on Baron Street sold them,no idea on price, but way out of my reach price wise
Yes there were not many fans in the 1970s who wore a replica shirt became of the price. My first one was the 1975-76 away shirt but didnt buy another one until the luminous shirt in 1989-90, Reckon it was the late 1980s when replica shirts were selling well

So they have never been cheap, yes the luminous one was mine, going on holiday to gran Canaria spotting blades a mile off.

Was that the white with a red and black one, with a crew neck in 75/76 Mr S?

The luminous one was Umbros biggest ever selling shirt,or so I was told

Still have mine I had from there when I'd be about five. Round collar, orange Umbro tag in the neck. Mum sewed the giant No:3 (Ted) on the back & the square Sheffield coat of arms badge on the front.
After that I'd guess the 1975/6 with the round neck & black added to the stripes which I think would have been from Suggs. Sadly no longer have this.

I remember getting one from a wooden shed like shop on the corner of John street and Shoreham street @1971.Cotton with long sleeves. it was the club shop/ ticket office/ pools office. It was @£2 -3 . You told them your size and they went and fetched you one. they sold programmes and golden goal tickets, enamel badges etc. Before that my mum bought our football shirts from the army and navy stores in town. Red, blue or green was the choice. Jack archers was where you went for boots, opposite the new Spar. Not many lads had replica shirts at games until later in the 70's, certainly nobody over the age of 16 wore a football shirt for any over reason than playing the game. shirts became more fashionable once Admiral started tarting up the dirties kit.

The first officially-licenced replica kit was the 75-76 kit Silent was talking about, unless I'm much mistaken.

Official replica kits just didn't exist prior to Admiral entering the market. Umbro started a line of replica kits based on team colours in the 50s but minus official branding. This was sufficient until many clubs individualised their kits in the 60s and even then those were usually only small additions that could be easily bought such as badges.

I had the Hobbit kit from the early 80s, the home shirt to the yellow and brown away shirt. Got a pic somewhere of me in a school PE class when Colin Morris and Paul Stancliffe came to do coaching.

There is a picture somewhere in my sisters house with me, in the R&W stripes, on holiday in North Wales from summer 1968.
Bought from Archers or Suggs. Got the white with red collars and cuffs in around 1970 for ten bob from Archers because it had a mark on the chest. Came off first wash and I wore it every time I played football for months.

The earliest shirt I can remember getting was the home shirt with thin red white and black stripes. I can't remember which year it was? I was only a nipper at the time.

The home Hobbott kit in 1982, shirt, shorts and socks from the sports shop on Woodeseats. For some reason the red socks were white at the feet.

My mate used to have a United shirt before 1970 in those days you had to put your own badge and numbers on. I know they were as rare as rocking horse shit back then so I don't know if he got it from the club as he was a ball boy for years, probably the only way he could afford to get in as the family were not that well off.

There was a really good documentary on earlier this year about Admiral and how a small company from Leicester basically invented the replica kit.

As said, prior to Admiral in 1975, replica kits weren't really a thing. You could buy generic red and white striped shirts by Umbro, but they would be the same whether you wanted Blades, Sunderland, Exeter, Brentford; you just added the appropriate badge. Admiral started to have designed, distinct shirts and marketed replica versions for the public to buy, it caught on and then exploded in the late 80s.

The earliest I ever saw was the Admiral kit and it sure looked mighty fine, but you could definitely buy one of these in the early 80's too, I know this for sure becos I got one at Langsett Sports. It'd be a cult classic now I reckon

I have two of these ones. They are lovely kits. United fans love a good shirt old ones seldom come along on eBay and when they do they always go for loads.
