County Women proud to support the Maddy Cusack Foundation this Sunday​

Stockport County Women are dedicating this weekend's FAWNL Division One North match against Chorley Women to Maddy Cusack, and will be raising funds for The Maddy Cusack Foundation through a bucket collection.

This Sunday marks the three years since footballer Maddy Cusack took her own life. Maddy died on 20 September 2023 at the age of 27, having spent the previous four-and-a-half years building a career and a reputation as one of the most respected figures at Sheffield United Women.

The fixture provides an opportunity for Stockport County Women to remember Maddy not only for the tragic circumstances of her death but for the footballer, and person, she was throughout her life.

Born in Nottingham on 28 October 1995, Maddy developed a love of football from an early age and began her journey with Nottingham Forest before joining Aston Villa’s academy. She went on to play senior football for Aston Villa, Birmingham City and Leicester City before making the move to Sheffield United in January 2019.

It was at Sheffield United where Maddy established herself as a key figure. A midfielder by trade, she became the club’s longest-serving women’s player and reached a significant milestone during the 2022/23 season, when she became the first Sheffield United Women player to make 100 appearances for the club.

Her career, however, extended beyond what happened on the pitch. Maddy had a degree in marketing, public relations and advertising from the University of Derby and also worked for Sheffield United away from the playing side. She initially worked with the Sheffield United Community Foundation before moving into a marketing role at the club.

Following her death, Sheffield United described her as a respected player who had a “unique position” within the club, while tributes came in from across the football community.

What remains beyond dispute is the impact Maddy had on the people around her and on the clubs and communities she represented. Maddy’s football journey was one of dedication, professionalism and commitment.

For Stockport County Women, Sunday’s meeting with Chorley Women is therefore about much more than a football match. It is an opportunity to remember a fellow footballer, to celebrate her life and career, and to ensure that Maddy Cusack’s name continues to be remembered within the women’s game.

Three years after her death, the football community continues to remember Maddy — and on Sunday, Stockport County Women will add their own tribute to that lasting legacy, by holding a minute's silence prior to kick-off.

We will also be doing a bucket collection to raise money for The Maddy Cusack Foundation. So please, if you’re able, bring some change down to the Ground Up Solutions Stadium to contribute towards this fantastic charity.
