I'm amazed that people on this site can remember games from way back in history, who played & who scored etc while I only have the occasional flash back.

I seem to remember traveling to Bury for a cup match, it was when I was a teenager so it must have been in the swinging 60's in those days hardly anyone had a car, if you wanted to travel to matches it had to be by a supporters club coach or train.

On the 6th of Jan 1962 we did play away to Bury in the cup, maybe it was that match when a train load of supporters, I remember nothing about the match but I do remember that the train kept stopping every few miles, we got angrier & angrier as the time ticked by, we started to realise we wouldn't make it for the KO

we eventually pulled into the station just after 3pm, we all pilled off the train, a brave ticket collector stood at the end of the platform saying 'tickets please' he soon jumped out of the way when he realised that hundreds of blades fans were not going to be delayed any longer & we all barged through.

There was a mad scramble through town, Saturday shoppers dived for cover as we all ran to the ground, we got further held up at the turnstiles, we were all chanting & shouting, the crowd inside must have wondered what on earth was going on, they could hear us but couldn't see us, at the away end there were only a few Blades fans, then just in a few minuets it was full.

Does anyone else remember the game? I remember the train journey & the stampede to the ground but little else.

I'm too young for that game but the facts are :

6th Jan 1962 - FA Cup 3rd Round
Bury 0 Sheffield Utd 0
Team :- Hodgkinson, Coldwell, Mason, Richardson, J Shaw, Summers, Allchurch, Kettleborough, Pace, Russell, Simpson
Attendance : 14,720

The replay at the Lane was also drawn 2-2 with Pace and Allchurch scoring in front of a 25,043 crowd and then the Blades went through in a 2nd replay at Hillsborough of all places 2-0 with Doc Pace getting both in front of a crowd of 26,941.

We went on to beat Peterborough 3-1 in Round 4, Norwich 3-1 in Round 5 before going out to Burnley in the Quarters 1-0 at the Lane. Burnley were a top side and finished 2nd in the old Division 1 that season.

Think this is the last time we won a match at a neutral venue
Bury had a young kid playing for them 16. year old I think name of Jones he gave j SHAW a hard time he said as much after the games.
It was the season when a fluke Pointer header won the 6th Round game at the Lane.We played virtualy the whole game with gerry Summers playing on the wing with a hamstring injury, no subs in them days.

We beat Bradford 4-1 at Elland Road after the fire.

The cup match was before my time but i remember the match at Bury on Tudor's 2-goal debut around 1969 and the train journey sounded very similar to yours. Another memory of this was setting off from Victoria Station. I really feel old now.

Forgot the Elland Road match, cheers

Fun fact - before they started deciding them on pens, an FA Cup Semi Final went to multiple replays 8 times. United played in 4 out of 8 of those ties:

1899 - beat Liverpool in the 4th game: 2 draws, and one game abandoned due to crowd congestion with United losing 1-0.
1902 - beat Derby in 3rd game after 2 draws
1928 - lost to Huddersfield in 3rd game after 2 draws
1961 - lost to Leicester in 3rd game after 2 draws.

I went to all three games against Leicester.
Arrived at half time at Leeds (traffic). Doc Pace goal disallowed, but he claims he did not handle the ball.

We had the best of that 1st match and Docs goal was a good one,as the 2 replays unfolded leicester ( 1st division team )
Gradually got our measure and won it at St Andrews, although Graham Shaw missed a pen late in the game.Didn't get
to St Andrews as being a school boy! I had run out of cash.

I too ran out of cash & missed the St Andrews game, my paper round money wouldn't stretch to another away game, anyway I don't think my parents would let me skip school but some of my mates did.
The supporters club coach pulled up outside the school in the afternoon, they had to run right by the headmasters office, of course he saw them, there punishment was to write an essay on the match.
My dad a Rotherham supporter had offered to take me to wembly if the Blades had won but I wasn't impressed, I would have preferred to go with my mates but it wasn't to be :(

"In the New Year (1962) we played Bury in the 3rd Round of the Cup. It took us three games to get past them. In the first replay at Bramall Lane I remember seeing Doc Pace go up for a cross in the middle of a bunch of players. A fist came out, I didn’t see whose, and laid out poor old Doc. The ref didn’t see it."

"Perhaps this was Cup nerves, because we were in the Semi-Final of the FA Cup and drawn against Leicester. My brother-in-law was twelve years older than me, (still is, come to that), and he took me up to Leeds to see the Semi-Final. The ground was packed. Before the kick-off some Leicester supporters carried a mock coffin round the pitch with "Sheffield United" on the side. For us, an elderly gent dressed in red and white with a long red and white baton walked round the pitch escorted by two young lasses with United hats and scarves. The game was real end-to-end stuff, and both sides had goals disallowed. Doc Pace hit the ball into Leicester's net, but the ref ruled he had handled it first. Doc pointed to a mark on his shirt, to show he had chested the ball, but there was no change. Ever after, I cited this as evidence we had been robbed, but I heard that Doc, just before he died, admitted he had handled the ball.

Program for the semi final in Leeds

The game ended 0-0 and the replay was a few days later at Notts Forest's ground. We were at school, and the teacher let us listen to the second half commentary on the old school radio. This was 0-0 again. The third, and deciding, match was won by Leicester 0-2. They went on to lose in the Final to Spurs who were in their Double-winning year. We took comfort by saying we could concentrate on the promotion drive."

Got the programme right here. The first game we won it. I was right behind the goal and Doc scored a good goal (ref years later said his biggest regret was that decision to not allow the goal that day) there was a crush and loads of us got moved from behind the goal at Elland Road. Match at City ground was another 0-0 we were lucky to get away with it that day. Never forget my Dad getting me off school for the 2nd replay at St Andrews a night match, could not believe Graham Shaw missed that pen. Hated leicester for 20 years after that. I still think we would have given Spurs more of a game at Wembley
