.......Is what we have at the moment.

Last 6 league results
PL W D L F A Pts
6 0 4 2 5 7 4

Gonna take a massive improvement to get us anywhere near the playoffs by the end of Jan with the fixtures coming up.
We seem totally incapable of scoring more than 1 goal in a match.

And I was so positive at the start of the season.......

Bah humbug.

And in all 6 of those games Clough has had a different f'kin excuse. It's nothing to do with the fact that he signed loads of average players instead of a few quality ones or that he approaches every match in the same negative way - hoping to nick a game 1-0 rather than going out to win it from the start.

yeah it would be ok if we are tight at the back - you might say 'oh just need a striker to tun it round'. But now we have turned totally soft at the back and are giving away ludicrous goals. Time for Cloughs team to start drilling them better and get a settled back four.

Yep the boring 1-0 win trying to cling on has been tried and tried by Blades in this league and hasn't worked.

I hope the Scunny match isn't called off as we might be able to win that 1-0 on Sun, but then again..........

Scunthorpe haven't lost a game since October. It's a sad state of affairs but we don't look capable of an upset come Sunday.

Just noticed that we are as close to 2nd as we are to relegation points wise !

The fact we've stayed in the top 6 despite taking only 4 points from the last 18 shows how much of a muchness most of the teams are in this division. Unfortunately, there's now 4 teams who are showing what they're about and pulling away and we're going backwards if anything so things will have to turn round as dramatically as they did last season if we are to make any inroads this season.

Clough's 1-0s are not working and I can't see how he's going to change. He may well bring in a better Doyle or a better McCarthy in January but I really don't see a change in mentality and that's the problem. He thinks we can go 1 up and then sit back and hit teams on the break. He got away with it in the 2nd half of last season but it's not a blueprint to get out of this division when you don't have the firepower for a plan B as we clearly don't.

We've pretty much played everyone once now and we've managed to beat 3 sides in the top half of the table,

I think that is a telling stat on how average a L1 side we are.

We have to improve if we want to secure the 5th or 6th place.

Very good post mate. His interviews back all this up because yesterday he was bemoaning the fact we didn't take 1 of the first 3 chances, why didn't he say take all 3 chances,i'll tell you why,he wants to do exactly what you said and just get 1-0 up and then sit back but when that doesn't happen we're up shit creek.Mentality is the key word in your post also, and i too don't think he knows how to change it.

The last 6 games have told us all we need to know. We'd just come off a decent October when it looked like we were coming back to last season's form if not putting in spectacular performances. The Barnsley loss was bad but could have been a blip and it looked that way after a good win at Donny. Come from behind draws in the next two home games and Clough was bemoaning the fact we couldn't seem to go a goal up. An unlucky defeat to MK but the same old problem scoring. Then, we do go a goal up against Fleetwood and Walsall but then sit back and pay the price at the former and, the most telling quote after Walsall was when Clough said he was disappointed to concede so quickly against Walsall as he wanted us to sit back and defend and hit them on the break. Again at PV by all accounts, we started well but then a few missed chances later and another winnable game drifts away. In the meantime, those tough teams we did so well against to get draws have been conceding 4s and 7s to our rivals.

A return of 12-14 points should haver been a comfortable target for those games which would have put us bang in the mix and whilst we are capable of putting a run together like last season, if we play like we are, with the tactics and mentality, it's unlikely.

Having said that, a decent bossing midfielder and COG / McNulty up front and it could be different, I'm just not sure Clough sees it that way.

The whole thing is very disappointing, we cant beat an egg at the moment, I think Clough needs to be more adventurous like in the cup last yr

Not so sure we've been particularly adventurous in the cup but we've generally beaten 'bigger' clubs who have taken the game to us which is why we tend to be better away from home. When we need to force the game, or go for the kill when 1 up, it's against his nature and tactics. Had Plymouth scored the pen it could have been a different story.
