What did they think was going to happen when the rules have been altered to help the established clubs stay there?

Promoted clubs don't get a financial advantage, and are often disadvantaged by having to fund ground improvements.

The big killer is the 5 substitutes rule, which allows established clubs to change almost half a team, from a bench which is often stronger than a promoted clubs 1st 11.

If the EPL want a competitive league (the owners of the established teams don't), then they need to change the substitutes rule, check the VAR bias, and more importantly give promoted teams some extra money in the first year of promotion to enable them to compete. Most have gambled financially just to get there, so rolling the dice again after getting promoted is a huge risk for most.

The EPL don't want the newly promoted teams to survive, so what is happening this season (and happened in 2021) will keep happening in future seasons with low points for at least 3 clubs and at least 2 of the 3 promoted teams dropping straight back down again.

I’ve not read the article but assume it’s a piece on how shit the bottom 4 clubs are.

The ‘fight’ for the Premiership title has been a 2-horse race for the past 5 years and completely predictable.

There was 10 extra minutes on Saturday though which helped us, but you're spot on, everything favours larger, better squads.

Now it has the branding and the global audience the Premier League want to keep expanding and getting bigger and bigger like all businesses, I don't blame them. The product needs to be there and ever evolving. I think I am right that out of the Premier League this season only Bournemouth didn't have a spell in the old 1st division.

I;m sure the PL (as a gestalt entity) want to get bigger/better/more competitive.

The issue is that none of the teams that make up the PL want to jeopardise their specific position to make the league more competitive.

Those in the top 4 will do what they must to ensure that they stay there - and that no clubs can challenge them

Those challenging for Europe will want to maintain their own position as Englands European representatives

Both of the above two groups will continue to push for fewer domestic games (e.g. scrapping FA cup replays) - whilst at the same time pushing for more European games to keep the cash rolling in.

Pretty much every other team are petrified of dropping out of the league. They will grab any competitive advantage they can find (VAR, Subs, Time added on) to ensure that they aren`t sucked into a relegation battle..

Everyone wants it to be more competitive - but not at the expense of themselves...

If they just promote Wednesday immediately without all the fuss and bother of a season, then they have achieved this target, if Owlstalk is anything to go by. Plus the feel good factor for the fans of other teams who have been awaiting their return all these years.
