This seems to have come out through the Football League.

Harriott and Jean-Francois let go, as well as Kitson and Robson but we knew tha already.

Kennedy offered a new deal and Coyne kept on a month-to-month contract.

I still think he'll be an asset to the squad. Weir, a defender himself, will know how to utilise him properly. He could also be invaluable to the youngsters. My only concern with him is what his possible wages are!

The only interesting thing on there is that Harry is actually called Jacob?!

Have you noticed how much bigger our contracted list of players is compared with other League 1 clubs? That's certainly something we need to look at.

It's the quality not quantity argument AGAIN!

We could seriously do without Cresswell, Doyle, Porter, Williams and Higginbotham on that list. Most of them too old, all given contracts for too long, by incompetents who overestimated their ability and their importance to the team. It seriously sticks in my craw to see their names there.

Maybe LardSardine but looking at the list of players retained there's a lot of 18-21 year olds. Take them out and it's a different story with 15 senior pros, at least three of whom I would expect to move on (italics). (i) denotes long term injured, (l) on loan.

The squad is a mess. We've got 7 defenders contracted including Maguire but 5 are fullbacks and of those, personally I only rate 2 (McMahon and Hill; who I prefer at CB!) and even those two you can't really play in the same team. We've only got 3 senior midfielders.

Good luck Davey Weir. You're going to need it.

Senior pros (15)
GKs (2/1)
Coyne
Howard

DF (6/4)
Collins
Higginbotham (I really hope that any contract extension isn't unilaterally decided by DH)
Hill
McMahon
Westlake
Williams

MF (3)
Doyle
Flynn
McDonald

FW (4/3)
Cresswell
Miller (i)
Murphy
Porter

U21s (11)
GK (2)
Long
Willis

DF (3)
Barry
Kennedy
Maguire

MF (3)
Chappell
McFadzean
Whitehouse

FW (3)
De Girolamo (i)
Ironside
Tonne (l)

So we are keeping Coyne which suggests to me one of the keepers is on his way, another year for Higginbottom FFS, bye bye Maguire. I can't believe we are keeping Williams and why on earth are we not releasing Chappell and Tonne ? you could maybe say Ironside too none of them are good enough. The biggest shock has to be we are keeping Cresswell :eek::eek: OMG. More of the same old shit looks like McCabe has found another "YES MAN" in Weir. SNAFU

You can't just a 'release' a player. The ones released are at the end of contracts. If any of the squad are to be got rid of they have to be sold not released.

I'd suspect this is what Weir is walking into not what he has sorted out and decided.

Give him both time and some slack.

Got to give it time though. Got a new man in, he will need time to sort out the wheat from the chaff

Id rather Creswell have being playing the last dozen games than Chris`tries his heart out to no avail`Porter.
Dont forget that the above list will have additions and departures in the near future.
Glad that kitsons on his bike.Just wish he`d buy a tandem and take captain potatoe with him.

That list is dated 18th May. I imagine a lot will change before the new season. The list includes Eric Tonne - I thought he'd gone back to Norway?

For goodness sake! It's only the 14th June and the new manager has been in post less than a week. Why don't we agree a cease fire, get behind the manager and club, and see what develops? For what it's worth I am quietly optimistic, perhaps I should admit myself to a mental health hospital for being pathologically optimistic.

Call me naive but I was under the impression that following your favourite football team was supposed to be an enjoyable pastime not another job of work.

Aye it is supposed to be an enjoyable pastime fella, but hand on heart how many unitedites can say they have had more enjoyment than not in the last five seasons or so or value for money ? Lets not get carried away because we have a new manager in place after all we still have the same numpty as an owner with the same old numpties in the boardroom. It is fair to say that retained list was drawn up before Weir arrived at the club but come on anyone can see half the squad need bombing out of the club by any means possible, lets hope Weir is man enough to do just that otherwise I see no point him being here we may as well have carried on with Danny Wilson and his team of failures.
Having to keep on as coaches (I use that word loosely) Cresswell and Morgan is not a good start, let the guy manage and bring in the people he wants because I don't want to see Weir as yet another McCabe fall guy.

There are a number of youth players on that list who have been released. May be the case for a few of the seniors as well.
Yes, Pemberton, Salt, Heather and Ty Williams at least weren't offered contracts.

However I don't think any more of the first team players are out of contract.

I would like Wier to make a few available for transfer: Cresswell, Williams, Porter and Doyle.

For me Doyle is the only one that could respond and improve, the others aren't capable of contributing to a promotion chasing side so we should do everything to try and move them on. Difficult but some may take the hint.

its a misleading list as we are awaiting Weirs assessments on who is to be retained , and most contracts are valid to june 1st and these lists were on may 17th 18th

Ogrady is still on the owls list and hes fecked off
for eg

I understand and share your concerns and frustrations about United, I think we are just approaching them from different directions. It’s in the nature of football that you win some and you lose some. In this country if you want to win considerably more than you lose you support a team like Man Utd. I support United because I’m a Sheffielder and my family have always supported United, a club which has a generally very loyal, patient and good humoured bunch of supporters who collectively put a significant amount of money into the club each year. It is also a club which has, in general, consistently underachieved given its level of support.

I thought that Danny Wilson did a very good job with the resources at his disposal in his first year but many home performances last year were like watching paint dry. More significantly, the coaching staff seemed to be completely incapable of doing anything meaningful about the inability to score at home. For that reason, we are told, he was sacked. This is presumably what you are referring to when you talk about “McCabe Fall Guys”, where managers are used as a human shield to protect the Chairman.

All this wasn’t helped by a combination of bad luck on the club’s part (e.g. Evans, Miller etc) and a lack of bravery on the Board’s part, e.g. selling Blackman. In defence of the Board I would say that it is easy for people like me to make such statements when it’s not our money that’s being spent, but the Board have to take their share of the blame for United’s persistent underachievement even allowing for the recession.

Having said all that, the reality is that the club is a commodity belonging to the McCabe’s, at least in the commercial sense, so our choices as supporters are either to give up all together and go home or keep moaning about the past or see next season as yet another opportunity and get behind what the Board says and, at this very early stage, appears to be trying to do. What frustrates me is the thought that the Board thinks that we are all stupid and that we fall for their rhetoric each year. I go to watch United primarily because it is my club in a sociological sense, nothing to do with the Board or the quality of football.

The key people in this for me are David Weir and his coaching staff, the players and the supporters, who can either, destroy players and managers psychologically with their criticism, or lift them with their support. Young players in particular are very sensitive to this so this year it will be more important than ever. What we don’t want to see is players being harassed and bullied by people who purport to support the club. I’m thinking of players like Stephen Quinn who was persecuted for long periods by a certain section of the crowd. Now he was a terrible player wasn’t he? I am sure that Mr Weir will quickly be aware of what he has and hasn’t got in his squad, if he isn’t already. He may even get more out of some players, but I agree that there is quite a bit of deadwood which will take time to sort out.

Finally, if we are to believe the testimonials that have been doing the rounds about how intelligent and well respected David Weir is , and I am sure they are correct, then surely he would have no problem in finding another job should he ever want one. It is not beyond the bounds of possibility therefore that if our Board doesn’t keep its promises to him he may be the one getting rid of them. In the meantime I remain cautiously optimistic for the medium term provided everybody, the Board included, do their bit.

Good post Fazak. It's a long time since a manager of United 'Got rid of the Board' If that situation ever arises again, then we may be sure. it is because of one of two reasons, which in my view are', 1 The Board reneged on promises made, and we are pants, or 2 We have become so successful that other clubs want a slice of the cake. I do hope that if Mr thinks of moving ,, it is for the second reason; who knows, we perhaps would be able to make a better offer and keep us going onwards and upwards.

Well said Sirius. A proportionate amount of optimism combined with a good dose of humour is what makes supporting United so *enjoyable/depressing/interesting/dull (*select any one from four depending on prevailing circumstances). What we don't want is for everyone on here to agree because that is what makes the Forum so **entertaining/depressing/interesting/dull (** select any one from four depending on prevailing circumstances).
