Aye got injured midweek.

Though, to be honest, I hear from people who attend the youth games that Diego is a classic flair player. He turns up 1 in 5/6 and everyone raves about him, but ignore the other 4/5 where he goes missing. The 4 that played tonight (plus Calvert-Lewin) seem to be the most realistic 1st team players in the future.
Thats a bold statement to make considering diego plays for italy allready and england are fighting for him aswell ,plus hes got man utd ,man city ,arsenal ,chelsea ,everton and a host of other clubs looking at him .Id love to see which youth team games they have been to ,cant be ourso_O

I remember having this argument with Ollessendro about how short players could make great Centre Halves. I cited Cannavaro along with fellow WC winning Captain Daniel Passarella. Carles Puyol, too.

James Chester at Hull is about 5'10. Matt Hill is 5'8. Jagielka is coping allright at 5'11.

For mea centre half can make up for lack of height and pace by what's between his ears. The reading of the game and anticipation can make up for both of those qualities.

Or alternatively, perhaps it is ours and they're giving their honest opinions.

He absolutely has bags of talent and the potential to be a top pro, but that doesn't mean he's the best player on the pitch every week by default.

He's not yet his usual self since returning from injury from the games I've seen, not that he should be expected to be, it's about getting back into things and concentrating on next season.

Cloughy will have given him pointers on what he wants to see and it's about proving to him that he's got that. Thankfully we've got a manager that sees the importance of the academy in more than just providing sound-bites.

One of the unfortunate side effects of the youngsters doing well is that people seem to profess to know everything about them and that they know best, despite in a lot of cases having never seen them play, some of the comments in the stands are astounding.

Agreed. I used to think that Harry might not perform at a higher level than this because of his lack of pace. But some of his recent displays have made me start to change that opinion. I think Morgan has probably had a fair bit to do with that.

His body shape has changed from the start of the season and looks like a proper athlete.

Let's not forget the greatest of them all. He was slightly under 6 feet tall.

However, as a general proposition, it helps to be Shawcross sized in modern football.

Someone's going to have to fill me in on how Terry being taller would help him out against players like Suarez and Sturridge. I don't think he's every going to be a 1st team starter every week but he is a good squad player. Clough must like him as this is the most football he has seen since coming out of the youth team. Christ, Wilson got Egan on loan when desperate so let's just thank god we have a manager who see's talent on not just measurables.

Last night was a kick in the nuts for the academy knockers.
It depends on who is our 1st team manager. Some managers are afraid of trying youngsters. As our Academy have been downgraded to Category B lets hope the best youngsters in the country will ignore this and join our Academy because Nige isnt afraid of playing youngsters

You can't say that! He's an over rated volleyball player - or at least that is what some people (or more accurately, one person) would have you believe.

Its refreshing to see the youngsters being given a chance to impress.

to often under previous managers we ended up with rubbish loanees who didnt give a shit about the club instead of young hungry players who already play for us.

if we are to progress as a club then we need players who will be here for at least the next couple of seasons & can grow & develop with Nigels tactics.

The academy has a big part to play in the next few years IMO.

Nigel Clough today made a major announcement on his future plans for SUFC. The Blades boss committed himself to a unique strategy: "We've been here long enough now to assess all the players" said the former Derby manager "We had a management meeting after last nights win over Rotherhoof and we've concluded there are two vital components for our future success - youth and beards."

The Blades chief then announced major new recruitment at the Redtooth Academy:

It's quite a lot of people's work over a long period of time. I started watching the young teams when Ron Reid was in charge and was always impressed with the emphasis that was placed on playing football, he also had a tendency to try and get players playing in positions other than their favoured one in order to get them to learn more about the game. This was of course built on by John Pemberton and has been continued by the current crop. But it is the coaches working with the even younger lads who are laying the foundations for our U18's to be a good stage on which to impress and progress to the first team.

I too have heard that Ron Reid was instrumental in our Academy succees. Why did he leave? Who was the manager?

If you mean Franz Beckenbauer, I wasn't allowed to use him. Olle said 'Name 10 short Centre Halves who've ever made it and you can't have Beckenbauer, he was nearly 6'.'

I was mainly referring to the 4 been more realistic first team players in the future bit foxy, considering diegos credentials thats all, i do respect everyones opinions and thats just mine not that it means owt.
Yes and i agree with the comments from the stands bit, some of them havent got a scooby doo

I thought this was the start of a joke, something like:

Reed, Dimaio, Khan and Kennedy.....walk into a supermarket to buy fags and they all get asked for I.D.

Beckenbauer wasnt really a centre back. He started in midfield and then in the 1970s became a sweeper

They wouldn't walk into a supermarket they would be in the kiddy chair at the front of the trolley!
