Maximum wage was abolished in 1961. Tom came to us in 1964 from Sheffield FCTom could have been a top player if he wanted it, he dove tailed his footy career ( as a young man) with studying for a pharmaceutical career if I remember right.)Being part time always put him at a disadvantage .
Not sure if he went full time before he left for Chesterfield but he was a talent (similar laid back style as Coutts). Maybe putting a career in front of football probably served him well as the maximum wage was still in force when he was coming through

Wonder who was our first player to be on above maximum wage as it was?True, but can't imagine United being at the forefront of teams willing to pay any more than they had to!

weren't t sure the year it was abolished but Tom was in his twenties when he joined us his late teen years were spent at uiv with footy taking a back seat that's why he was with Sheffield fc.being part time didn't suit him as he was not a great athlete which held him back.Quite a few players were part time in those days . Billy Russell was one he was a school teacher but he was a very quick athletic player,he scored a hatrick at St James Park as we reached the semi final for the first time since 1936,We've been to four more in the last 23 years but as you know silent we lost them all.Surely we will cracking it next time.Maximum wage was abolished in 1961. Dennis Finnegan was on a part-time contract too
He was centre back when he played for our 1st team but in some of the reserves games in the mid 1960s he played up front and scored quite a lot of goals!Wasn't he Doc Pace's understudy? Seem to recall watching him in loads of reserve team games but not at 1st team level.
Yea funnily enough he was the complete opposite to Joe Shaw and maybe if he had gone full time would have been abetted centre half.A real stopper of a centre half who was as hard as nails. He also wore old fashion boots with high leather sides which had gone out of fashion. He was an hospital porter who obviously loved his job.Lived on Bates St s10 , I also lived there at the time.Dennis Finnegan was on a part-time contract too
It's makes you wonder how good players of that elk would have been with the modern day levels of fitnessJimmy Hagan was on part time contract too as he had business interests
He had a spell when he was tried at centre forward it was a success for a short period but he was found wanting even at reserve team level and it peterd out,he wasn't sharp enough reallyHe was centre back when he played for our 1st team but in some of the reserves games in the mid 1960s he played up front and scored quite a lot of goals!
One of Tom Fenoughty's nephews also had a brief spell on loan with us - Michael Boulding (Michael's mum is one of Tom's sisters)Tom could have been a top player if he wanted it, he dove tailed his footy career ( as a young man) with studying for a pharmaceutical career if I remember right.)Being part time always put him at a disadvantage .
