'Memries' Recollections of your first Blades vs Wednesday match....

It was 1966 at S6 when we drew 2-2 and for some reason we wore white shorts.

I remember the first derby I went to on my own. I was in the old East Stand on John Street perfectly placed to see Bill Punton score the only goal.
When Spurs came to the Lane for a midweek fixture at the Lane in early September 1966, they brought their black shorts so the ref ordered us to wear the white shorts. We won that night (we had lost the first 4 games of that season) so we carried on wearing white shorts which brought us wins until losing to Birmingham in the League Cup quarters in December. We decided to wear white shorts for the 1967-68 but it didn't bring us luck.

My first derby game was the 1-1 draw at the Lane in April 1980, the return fixture after Boxing Day. Don't remember much about it now as I was 9 at the time, but the Blade sat next to me smacked me in the face when McPhail scored the opening goal for us!

Of course Terry Cuntan scored the equaliser from 25 yards after our defence allowed him to turn and make an arcing run... CUNT.

Thought it was Butlin put us in front. Kenworthy marked Currant out of the match, brilliant, then the pig ran his studs down TK's ankle and he had to go off. This was in front of the ref who did sweet f a. Pig scored after that.

The 1 1 , Easter Saturday 1980.
John MacPhail goal for us.

Fortunately living in Leeds, and having no transport, I missed Boxing Day so my first was also the return at BDTBL the following April.

My first game was that league cup game in 2000 the first time we’d played them in a competitive match for 6/7 years, unfortunately I was sat on the Pig end in their North stand with my dad and his fancy piece at the time, I remember being told not to celebrate if united scored and stand and clap if pigs scored, horrible experience having to do that as a staunch 14 year old blade, we knew there’d been “bother” at the far end of the stand towards the leppings Lane end and apparently they were 100’s of Blades with their own little section of the stand, my dad went to look with the promise of watching the second half with all the blades fans in the stand, he came back and said it was mainly all Uniteds “boys” and they’d be loads of trouble if we sat there, I was gutted to be honest I’d have sooner got my little head kicked in than sat around these porky so n sows, anyway we lost and was it Asaba? Missed an absolute sitter late on. Depressing first derby but since then I’ve certainly had the better results on my side.

Personal favourite derby match? 3-1 Michael brown. No contest as I was at the rust bucket last season.
It was Marcus Bent who missed late on from about 6 yards out.

The 1 1 , Easter Saturday 1980.
John MacPhail goal for us.
This was my second , following the previous Boxing Day , but notable as it was the first time I'd had a drink in a pub. The venue that started my lifelong love affair with ale was The Raven just off West Street , later to become The Hornblower and then demolished to make way for West One.

This was April 5 1980 , the day before my 15th birthday. I had four halves of Trophy and don't remember much of the first half !

My first derby ever was the 1-2 loss in the league cup at the sty in November 2000. I was only 14, but I remember all of it...the buildup, having never seen us play the old enemy before, the match itself, and the heartbreak at the end.

Followed by a dour 1-1 at the lane that December. Forgettable match.

Then.

April 1st 2001. Carl Asaba and Laurent D'Jaffo inscribed themselves into my memory in a way that will NEVER be forgotten. My first derby victory, and at their place to boot. The only one that I attended that comes close (so far) was the 3-1 with Brown's thunderbolt of a goal. But I still treasure the memory of that first victory more.

I live in hope that one day (today?) I'll get to see one that blows all others away.

With one sleep to go, a new dawn is nearly upon me for my first time experiencing what this 'game' will be all about...

'Game, GAME Jonny?' I hear you all cry...

So it is with much fevered anticipation since obtaining a golden ticket (eternal thank yous to prince albert for providing one! :) ) I will be wandering my way up from Worcester after work to the BDTBL cauldron and im sure it will be like nothing ive been to before when i've popped up for a game.

I will try and drink in and savour every living moment of it and to set me nicely on my way it would be great if anyone can regale their own stories, memories of their first Steel City derby game.

November 1991. Freezing cold day on the South Stand. We were expected to get a thrashing. We won 2-0, Deane through Woods' legs and Whitehouse in front of the kop. Sheridan and Warhurst flattened each other. Every season we did something incredible; 88-89 - promotion, 89-90 - promotion; 90-91 - staying up after being dead and buried; 91-92 - same again but with the Pigs double thrown in.

Still the best times I've had as a Unitedite.

Enjoyed reading these. Some great matches between us.

My first was three league cup win in 2000 when we beat you 2-1 with ekoku scoring twice for us.

My worst memory was obviously last season.

The 2-2 draw at the Lane in 2011.
How that team playing that football got promoted ahead of us baffles me to this day.

Wembley 93', my dad took me, 7 years old and I remember little to nothing about the actual match. My dad woke me up early so we could get down to the Cross Keys in Wath to get the coach. Outside Wembley I'm sure there was a huge Sonic the Hedgehog hot air balloon in the car park (randomly). In the stadium I remember a huge flag coming up and over us before kick off and the early Waddle goal, I remember Cork scoring just before HT and that's it.

I remember walking back home, late at night piss wet through as I think there was a storm.

Thankfully my memory of my first Wednesday game isn't great apart from randomness other than the actual game itself.
Sonic the fucking hedgehog - just the thought still makes me shiver.

First - ZDS. 15 years old and a whole school career listening to those arrogant fuckwits lord it over us. I was so keyed up that I had my only sleep-walking episode where alcohol was not involved when I got home. Think I was off to sort it out with somebody!

First league games were the 2-0 and 3-1 two seasons later. The 3-1 at Hilsborough still one of the best nights of my life. Bumped into so many blades from my childhood coming out of the Leppings Lane end - people’s Dads, the barber, teachers, loads I’d met through cricket - all dancing, all banging on the cladding on the way down the stairs and all singing into the street.

Lasting memory of the 2-0 is getting back to the car in the car-park and a family or neighbors who’d come down in a split car patiently and politely waited for the blue and white half to walk sadly up to the car and get in. The doors shut, the engine started and then the Blades exploded into cheers. The car was bouncing :)

Boxing Day 0-4 in 1979 was the first derby game I attended as a 15 year old at Swillsborough.
I went to the return game 1-1 in 1980.
The best 2 derbies were both the 3-1 wins.

Frought, frenetic, frustrating....

And friggin rainin! :)

The most one sided 0-0 i've seen, loved the atmosphere, I got in just on cue for the GCB..although it palpably changed during the second half into a sense of apprehension and that 'these spawny gets are gonna mug a goal out of nowhere' deja vu around me.

I ended up in a rush due to train delays and arriving in Sheffield at 7:30 so wasnt able to soak up any atmosphere pre match, only rain drops in my mad dash going right round the ground to find Prince Albert who was waiting patiently with my ticket for me, which I feel sure back in my school days wouldve been the 800m record for sports day! :D

Looking forwards to another and a Blades goal to lift the roof off, that was all that was missing last night (and a pint or two of Belgian Blue!)
