Some performances have been dreary, but I think in all games since the WC, we have been the better side. Yes, even at QPR when we played pretty well 2nd half. In fact this season, I think that only away at Stoke have we been obviously second best.
A few obvious things -
Billy is past it and is only playing 'cos there's no one else until Macburnie returns (which may be never - WTF is wrong with him?)
Berge is dire, and needs dropping for Mcatee, Doyle, Osborn, Bash, Bogle (further forward), or, well.... anybody really. Emperor's New Clothes and all that....
Jebbison really hasn't got it has he? Needs to be somewhere like Rochdale, Gillingham, Chesterfield etc.

But we're well clear, so we perhaps folks shouldn't be as down as they are. Get pissed before the game like I do. It's really more fun....

If we’re promoted playing like we are every week I doubt people will look back and think bloody hell wish we’d played better against Stoke at home last season.

Makes no bloody difference, 3pts is 3pts. People want the best of both worlds

Didn't Heck'y say something about they have been training on the academy pitch because the under soil heating hadn't been installed on the new desso pitch, he also said (quietly) it had just been paid for (maybe a rare slip of the tongue for him?),, also they were going to change the way they train due to the injuries (sustained on the academy pitch ?) - maybe that's part of the answer to our poor performances ?

I think the team does barely enough to win and doesn't consider entertainment values for the fans

Some are happy to be boring but winning
Some want to win more entertainingly

Has everyone considered the fact that the manager can never pick the same side is going to impact on performances? The constant chopping and changing and having to ask players to do things they probably aren't great at doing? Hard to play silky football when you have different players around you most games.

And yet, despite not being able to field a settled side in defence, midfield or attack, we're 11 points clear.

But not good enough.

Yesterday was maybe the only game where we've got something we didn't deserve. We haven't been great since Burnley but I don't think we've nicked points or anything. We've deserved exactly what we've got in each game.

Regards general play...agree Stoke probably edged it BUT we shouldn't let midfield control cloud our judgement.

Also agree Stoke has loads of attacks in the 2nd half BUT hardly created a single chance and didn't really look like scoring.
Although with our defence being so busy, it's never an easy watch.

Just checked the infogol website.

It's shows the XG as Sheffield United 0.87 Stoke City 0.34
This is factual proof that we deserved to win because Stoke City never offered a serious goal threat in the entire game.

I voted ‘We're winning but performances aren't good enough’ on the basis that on current performances it won’t be enough to beat the top 6 sides. Hopefully I’m wrong

Disagree with the last bit.

The issue seems to be.....we play well...deservedly go into a 2-0 lead.....then relax because it's too easy.

This won't be relevant when we play the top 6....doubt we'll breeze into a 2-0 lead because it's so easy.
Also when ever we've played the better teams....we've been focussed from the start and played much better.
We played Blackburn, Reading and Burnley who were all top of the league expecting a really tough game.
We played really well in all 3. We played Coventry who were in top form so we expected a really tough game, again we won quite comfortably.

Our weaker performances (where we take our foot off the pedal) have all come against the relegation threatened teams.

Regards the Stoke game it was crying out for a McGoldrick or even a McBurnie. A striker who can perform decent hold up play, just keep it, shield it, then lay it off to an advancing midfielder and play some simple composed sideways passing keep possession stuff.

We're winning and that's enough.

We've seen how good we can be. We've seen how we're currently playing. Is this a blip in performance? Maybe it is. But we're still winning. Performances will come back.

As I said in shoutbox, we've got 15 games to get results from now. If we don't perform in any but go up, I'll be happy. Even if I've seen not a single minute of it all ☺️

I’m reading posts who say we haven’t played well and only moments of quality enable us to win games…..er, isn’t that what defines a good team!

The fact that we have goals coming from all areas of the field and assists from a variety of players tends to suggest that we are a good team.

Enjoy the position we are in, having had to contend with a series of injuries to key players and with a considerable lead

Good point well made
Everyone appreciates that the alternative to promotion is probably a slow road to nowhere.
The lack of info about the takeover is not really alleviating that fear - all we know is that the current owners want out + won't be spending any of their own money to give us a chance in the Championship once the parachute payments have finished.
We are also burned by our last experience in the PL.
So unlike 2019 , when promotion was simply a fantastic thrill , we know that it's a huge ask to stay up and that many millions can be wasted on signing players who don't develop as we hope.
So naturally , even those optimistic enough about achieving promotion , are searching the current squad for those players good enough to make a decent fight of staying up - obviously we can't afford to buy more than a handful in the summer.
Therefore when such players appear to perform below their potential , it can be a cause for concern.
I think a lot of Blades will be calmer when more is known about the takeover

For me i picked "We're winning and that's enough" as 54 from 27 we are perfectly on course for promotion i cant fault the goalie, Defence or midfield. its just as much as i love him we struggle as we dont have a forward presence & playing without a striker. as shown by how much better we were up front at millwall

It might not be the 'sexy football' of the headier Wilder days but it's effective. We are difficult to beat and we will need that when we go up.

I've gone performances are fine, but we are yet to really click and play to our full potential. 11 points clear at this stage his huge and it would take an unthinkable collapse for us to fail now.

Ideally, the takeover will be completed next week and money could be available before the window closes. 2 or 3 big signings should see us over the finishing line.

We probably need 10 wins and 3 draws (from 19 games) for 87 points which is still under the 2 points per game that we are at now. This would leave current 3rd place needing 15 wins from 19 games to overtake us.

The only win I’d argue in that debate is Bristol City away.

We were generally second best that night. They hit the bar and post a couple of times and we scored a bit of a scruffy goal with a rare attack.
Yeah good shout. You're right with that one

Agree on your point SS. I just hope we’re not running out of steam & can front it against our promotion rivals. Still a long season to go

FWIW my opinion is that our performances aren't good enough and really need to improve.

When we keep the ball and pass around quickly we look brilliant, impressive, and no team I'm the division can live with us. We tend to do this for the first 20 minutes of the game and then the performance drops like a stone whether we score or not. I can't seen that all 11 players collectively just stop playing so is it the management? Are they ordered to sit deeper after scoring and defend the lead or the point (which reminds me of the days of "you start with a point etc" thanks Cloughie) or does it just take every opposition team 20 minutes to suss how to snuff us out and nullify our attack?

This is the most skillful 11 we've ever had. Lowe, Bogle, Ndiaye, Mcatee, Berge, Jebbo, RND, Anel, all capable of taking on and beating their man.

Egan, Clark/Robbo are solid defenders, with a solid keeper in Wes.

Norwood is our finest midfielder in 50 years and Doyle looks quality.

Sharp is the EFL's greatest goalscorer and McBurnie was looking like the striker we thought we'd signed before his injury.

Based on that, we should be attacking constantly and quickly and smashing teams, but after 20 minutes it's very laboured, slow and allowing the other team to have the ball while we chase shadows and punt it down the channels hoping Billy will outrun the defence (spoiler: he can't do this anymore) and hold the ball up.

Don't get me wrong, if we base the season on results then we're absolutely flying and we're having a brilliant season, but the performances just don't match the results. We've got some huge games coming up against the chasing pack and I'm hoping playing better teams will allow us to play better like we did against Burnley at home.

You can’t say that you’re not allowed to say that

Another spin on it, are you happy paying £30+ every week so see sometimes rubbish football but take 3 points?
Football is after all an entertainment business.

You're right. They totally dominated the second half and showed real attacking intent. Since we decided on a policy of no more than 3 passes before conceding possession back to them, combined with a refusal to push up the field, we made them look a lot better than they are and could easily have conceded an equaliser and maybe even a winner.
Yes. I'd agree with all that but thinking back what did they create apart from a near post header. Meanwhile Sander had his shot, and of course we did end up scoring.

Main thing,we,re pretty good in front of the goal both ways. Burnley are in front of us due to fielding mostly same XI week in week out. A more settle side would make us look better, but it is what it is. No complaints UTB
