Randomly bumping into Blades players

Well I was on the pitch! 1 down after 20 seconds and a man sent off within the first 10 minutes. Turned into the Alamo after that.:(

Lovely, which other club(s) did you play for or was it just Glentoran?

Indeed how about writing a post about the NI scene. Because you have your own League we don't really get that involved over here so it would be useful to understand the NI set up, rivalries etc.

I played in a church tournament once and one of the teams was led by Bruce Dyer. He wasn't really trying, but was good enough to call me "top quality" after I scored a hatrick.

Also bumped into Tony Currie in the carpark, who was a bit miserable.

Had a few drinks with Mrs John Brayford along with Greenwich Blade and a few others off here before Swindon away in the playoffs last year. She was very nice and gave a bit of gossip away about the players. Apparently they all get on really well. Awww.

Summer of 1996 (school holidays) I was walking by Millhouses Park when a car with United badges on the doors asked for directions to the (then) new training ground. In the car was David White and Andy Walker (think he was the one driving). Rather than just explain, I said I could show them. So I went to watch them train and have a chat (can't remember what about) - and they were pleased they didn't get lost or were late...

Another time I was at a hotel in Birmingham and saw David Holdsworth (after his move to Blues) by the gym. I suggested he should never have left United. A melancholy seemed to sweep over him and he said "Yes, I know".

When I was working at Wickes on Rutland Road, Morgs came in. He was looking for some paint and I embarrassingly went over, shook his hand and mumbled some inane drivel. He was really accommodating and we had a reasonable chat before I realised he had made his way to the exit because he had to go! True Blade and a Legend!

I briefly lived on Meersbrook Road and there was a shop on the corner opposite. I was in there and Vinnie walked in. So I said hello and he looked slightly startled then realised I was a harmless Blade and said 'wotcha mate'. We had a quick chat and then I left him to buy whatever he was buying.
As I walked out, a car was parked outside with Deansy in it and a couple of others in the back (didn't want to stare at them so not sure who it was).
But my favourite was driving down Cherry Street and seeing a car waiting to pull out of the car park. I assumed the driver was Blades related so I flashed him to pull out in front of me. I was very pleased to receive a smile and a wave from TC.

9th March 1968 - coming back with my dad from West Ham United away in 4th round of cup - we won 2-1. Our bus stopped at Leicester Forest services on M1, as we were coming back down the steps, who should be at the bottom but the united team, did we have a good sing song.

Then we went to Leeds away in the 5th round... enough said

When I was at Tinsley Wire,Betafence now, around 4 years ago a lorry pulled into the yard with a delivery and when the driver got out it was Keith Edwards.
He was sound.

Imagine I wrote it in this thread - the forum police would be all over me:D

Deano in Airedale hospital then in Leeds shopping for guitars with his brother. My wife spotted him at Hallamshire hospital last summer.

Cressy's lad trains with my lads team most weeks. I played in the dads v lads game against his lad but Cressy was on our side on the right wing. I played this fantastic pass to him from the outside of my foot curling into his path, I think he's lost loads of pace though as it went a few yards in front of him and out for a throw in.

You're just going about your business when you look up and your hero is in front of you. For me, I was walking down Limb Valley when I walked past Blades supersub Steve Charles. I was too stunned to say anything.
Was in the same year as Charlie at Rowlinson. Remember our form playing his in a cup match. Ref (our maths teacher, Mr Mountford) stopped the game part way through the second half with the score at 13-0. No prizes for guessing whose form won.

Bumped into Ched Evans at Cheshire Oaks retail park a couple of weeks ago. He was with his Mrs and photo took with him. Asked him when he was coming back and he said he had a few phone calls to make. Said he was gutted when he was forced away from club after his release.

Saw Brian Gayle in Wickes the other week, they didn't have what I wanted so nipped into Screwfix on Queens road and Carl Asaba was in there?! The Beard waiting for a train to Manchester with his rather nice girlfriend. Nearly ran over that horrible individual Gary Megson in Dore, he was jogging and didn't stop and kind of did a starsky and hutch roll over my bonnet looked at me in a bit of shock and ran off - it was only at that point I wish my right foot had stuck down
You only NEARLY ran over Megson? What were you thinking of? ......... And you call yourself a Blade

I've been fortunate to meet quite a few Blades. First was Deano. Not long after we sold him to Benfica he was in Sheffield Train Station and I was walking alongside him on the platform. Really wanted to say something but I was too nervous! I saw him five minutes late and he was the passenger in a car and I was next to him as he left the station and I gavce him the thumbs up. He just looked at me as if I was insane! I met Carl Asaba in Nottingham in a cafe. Really nice guy, and hat a short chat. Best meeting was with Shaun Derry, again in Nottingham. I was a student there at the time and he was in the Horn in Hand for those that know it, Its basically a student pub so I was surprised he was there. He was at United then and about 22. I said hello and explained I was a Blade and he said let me buy you a drink for you and your mate. I said he's a Bluenose though (Birmingham City) and he said never mind I'll still buy him one! We got talking Warnock and he said he's a decent manager but he thinks tactics are a type of sweet! Well funny.

I saw Paul Ifill at Chapeltown petrol station and said all the best for the season. He smiled and said cheers.

I saw Jose Baxter, John Brayford and Paul Coutts at last years Snooker at the crucible. I had my Blades top on and I saw John Brayford he saw me and then he just carried on. Slightly disappointed there! I was hoping for a thumbs up! I said hello to Coutts and wished him well in the gents later! Not like it sounds! Finally met Tony Agana at a school in Rotherham. I'll not say which one. I saw him and froze as I was so surprised it was him. I kept saying to my mate. That's Tony Agana! Eventually I ran after him and said hello and how he was a Legend etc. He seemed really pleaed and a total gent again. Think that's about it.

I have seen Dane a few times on matchdays around the ground. He is normally with a big group though so I never try to speak to him.

In the past I have spoken to a few in including Del Geary, Henderson and Tongue.

Most recently I spoke to Mark Howard in Waitrose. Nice lad.

About 6 years ago we were in Ayia Napa in the car wash nightclub. I was queuing at the bar when a little lad burrowed his way to the front, I looked at him and thought you look like del geary, who I have also seen and spoken too a few times in Oughtibridge. Took another look through drunken eyes and he looked at me and we both said at same time I think I know you! Great moment. Top fella

I was at the Sheffield Auction Gallery last year when TC walked in with his Mrs representing a charity for which Warnock was selling some match worn shirts he had aquired. He sat directly in front of me and and started bidding on some of them. There I was, 6ft 1" man mountain reduced to a bumbling wreck much to the amusement of my other half. I never did say how doo. I just sat there in awe

- Neil Warnock parked over my driveway once in my student days when I lived near Hunters Bar roundabout.

- Not a player as such but during my gap year I was working in a childrens' village in Israel. I got talking to one of the English teachers there who was from Manchester and when I mentioned I was a Sheffield United fan he told me a story of his school days when he was quite a decent footballer and was palying at a decent level until his leg was broken in a nasty tackle with an opposing right back - one Len Badger. He was quite proud of this fact actually!

- I used to bump into a number of footballers years ago when I worked in Homebase. David Ginola, Patrick Viera, Christopher Wreh, Luis Boa Morte and Nicholas Anelka. None who ever played for United mind. Oh and I served Dale Winton in there once.
Was Dale Winton buying Ronseal?

About 18 years ago. Short holiday to New York.

Sunday Morning - gentle stroll around Central Park until the morning was old enough to warrant beer and brunch.

Jump into a diner just south of the park and who should be on the next table..... yep, you guessed it...... Michael Palin.

I remember thinking 'Palin, hmmm, Blade or Pig ?'. Wonder if anyone on here knows?

He's a Blade!

Deep in the heart of Derwent Valley, I was recording some geological finds for the University.

About thirty minutes into the work, a gang, riding mountain bikes raced past.
Strange to see about twenty five all together, dressed the same almost.
Some faster than others.

First team squad, pre-season bonding session, mid/end of July 2009.

LYDON is a Geologist?! Seriously?! Nowt wrong with that, but I'd have never have thought!

I was also almost run over by Joe Bolton in the Bramall Lane car park.
I accidentaly stood on Joe Bolton's foot in a Chesterfield Pub in late 80's,I obviously apologised profusely and offered to buy him a drink, which he politely declined.Naturally I blurted out "You're Joe Bolton"! to which he muttered "Aye Mate" in embarrassment!

I know someone who knows Cressy. Did his lads used to play in same team as Jonothan Greening's kids? This may have been a few years ago btw so ignore if im talking drivel....

Bumped into Len Badger in a pub in Chesterfield years ago, me uncle knew him and said i were a Blade, i uttered under my shy breath summat along the lines of "tha were a great player Len".... Modestly Len replied, "Tha must be pissed"... well i was, but i were right all the same!

The Pub might have been "Fox & Goose" at Wigley just outside Chezzy,a mate had his Wedding Reception there years ago (when Len was Landlord) and I spent most of the drunken evening pestering him for a Photo/chat1 - In fairness he took my Idiocy in very good part! More recently, (today) i saw Bill Dearden and from the Dark side Kevin "Jumbo" Pressman, not together btw..

Yeah but did he blame SUFC or the media?

If you desperately want to bump into an ex Blade I suggest Blue bell wood at Kilton or Asda at gateford for Tc most afternoons ,you will either get a grunt or you wont be able to get rid of him dependant on the price of milk. And Sainsburys in Worksop around 7 ish you may bump into Glynn Hodges ,good bloke but bit of a FKW.
