Ramsdale

He's got to learn to move his feet in anticipation of a shot before diving. He's always a couple of feet short from pulling off a great save, cos he leaves the ground too early. Surely a good GK coach could work with him on this.

his trigger movement is awful. I know their first goal was a good header but look where he’s standing and look where he moves to when the ball comes in. He makes small moves when the ball’s in the air that makes it harder for him. Villa and Man City’s goals also showed this problem.

The club should be working on this. It is something he can be coached

I don’t think his reflexes are that sharp either.

This will be his last PL season IMHO.

Ramsdale is a bit of a wet lettuce in our box. Ffs, it's HIS penalty box, he should be barking out constant orders and coming out and taking control of it. Instead he's like a timid mouse who flaps at things. The best keepers radiate confidence to their defenders by shouting, organising what's in front of them and handing out the bollockings if necessary? i.e Schmeichel at Leicester.

About time Ramsdale realised he is the gaffer at the back and got that swagger and confidence that goes with it. Hes got to think that he is the king in that penalty box area. There have beena few instances this season when we needed him to take command of a high ball into the box and if necessary take out the ball and whatevers in front of him. Chelsea's equaliser for example, or the goal for Brighton when I think he should have come for the initial ball into the box (which Bash headed across our goa) and punched it and taken out all and sundry.

Confidence (or lack of it) is his biggest problem atm. Once he gets that he will be fine once he is fine tuned on the training pitch. One of Hendos biggest attributes...his confidence.

Problem with Ramsdale is anything remotely looping over him he has no chance of getting. It’s like going through treacle he doesn’t actually jump any higher. That first goal today for example (poor defensively before it) but he’s just so far away and doesn’t actually jump any higher! It’s baffling.

I certainly think there is a good goalkeeper in there and I am confident he will be great for us in time.

He needs to work on his damn catching though, can think of a few times he's flapped and spilled it.

Think if we had Blackman in goal instead of him wed conceded about half as many goals

Half as many?!!!

That's absolute nonsense. We'd concede more that that with prime Peter Schmeichel in goal.

With Blackman we'd be less vulnerable from set plays, on account of him being 9 ft 6 with 8ft long arms, but opponents would just adjust and play the ball further away from the keeper.
We'd also concede more low shots, as it took Blackman an age to get down. He used to get beat at his near post regularly.

Ramsdale did nothing to cost us in this game. He recovered from his fumble and the run out was silly, but ultimately didn't cost us anything.

Ramsdale has let 29 goals in. Illan Meslier the Leeds keeper has let in 33. The only difference there is Leeds bang loads in at the other end.

Agree that if we were scoring at the other end and heaven forbid we actually won a few games in the PL, it would take the heat off our defence and off Ramsdale and some of the issues probably wouldn't be so glaring.

That said, it has to be said that for the financial outlay that we have made, he has been disappointing so far. He hasn't been helped by a Swiss cheese defence in front of him though.

I still think Ramsdale will be a great keeper for us but he is a work in progress and it may take a few years to see the best of him. We should have looked to bring in Foster from Watford at the end of last season as well as Rammers to provide top level experience and guidance to Ramsdale who would have benefited hugely in the longer term. We didn't and it will now cost us. Just like it has by us not signing a big defensive unit at the back to replace O'Connell. Both on CWs head those mistakes (yes I know CW wanted a centre half but had already blown the budget on a very expensive forward who can't get a start atm).

When you put someone in the team for a game against League 1 opposition to boost his confidence and the defence switch off twice on set pieces its doesn’t do him masses of good. With what’s in front of him this season I don’t Henderson would have done much better.

Turning an introvert into an extrovert like Henderson will be next to impossible. Sure you can work on movement, positioning and reflexes, but what makes me borderline angry is that we forked out a large sum of money for a goalkeeper who’s only premier league experience was at a relegated side that conceded the 3rd most goals. You get what you pay for but I was never comfortable with the fee. What we paid for was potential when what needed was a safe pair of experienced hands after losing one of Europes best young goalkeepers.

To put that into perspective, thats like Chelsea (currently 9th) paying 16+ million for McBurnie when we get relegated. Doesn’t happen, wouldn’t happen. In fact no club in this division pays that. Plenty of anoraks on here, myself included, could have made legitimate cases for other much cheaper goalkeeper that were available both domestically and foreign. The benefit an extra few million quid to spend on other players.

That's not Ramsdales fault though is it? He didn't decide his transfer fee did he?

The unwarranted shit he is receiving may start to his performances; he should come off social platforms full stop as it may become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

He is better at reading the game than Henderson from a sweeper point of view but not as agile; kicking for both is similar. He's what, 21-years old, he can only improve but lets get off his back as there is no need.

The Blades goalkeeping options are a shambles. Ramsdale doesn't show anything that would lead me to believe he's a good goalkeeper, let alone a premier standard one. All aspects of his game appear to be poor and the dive for the first goal yesterday reminded me of Casper in Kes - the only difference was that at least he did 'jump' the right way.
One thought I did have is our 'goalkeeping' coaches involvement with scouting, training and guiding of our goalkeepers (Hendo shouldn't be included in this as he was a maverick) appears to be non-existent. His costly purchase seems to be one made out reputation rather than anyone actually studying him...ditto...Foderingham and I assume Verrips.
The bottom line is that Ramsdale isn't good enough and will need replacing if we intend to make a promotion challenge next season....

On a list of all our problems, Ramsdale is towards the bottom. And he is only on the list due to errors borne out of a lack of confidence and experience magnified by the sheer extent of other issues on said list.

There is a good goalkeeper in there, he is only 21 and his attitude appears first class to me. But he will not develop to his full potential with us if the witch hunt continues.

No it’s not, and I never glanced may gaze at him being the one who decided to buy himself for a large amount of money. The price paid falls at the feet of our recruitment strategy and the people in charge....no room for sentiment was once a phrase I heard often before our actions seemingly contradicted it.

Some of the stick he’s getting is unwarranted if it’s about his personal life and those that are doing that need to stop. I’m not attacking the young lads character. Whats not unwarranted are critical appraisals of his poor performances, experience and development. And to state hes better at one thing to then null and void the point by stating he’s not as good at another when the two skills are interdependent. Ramsdale has potential I’m not writing him off, but potential isn’t what we needed.

That said, do you believe he is value for money? and is the pressure of his price and filling the boots of an very good goalkeeper too much?

I fail to see how anybody who has watched Ramsdale’s performances would not be worried about our decision to sign him for that kind of investment.

There certainly are positive aspects to his game including some good close range reaction saves that are obviously important. However, there has been far too many times that he has failed to get anywhere near saving attempts that would be bread and butter to other premier league keepers. He seems to have absolutely no spring in his legs and can hardly cover any ground in the air because of it. Just watch keepers like De Gea yesterday who is like a sprung coil flying all over the place. Ramsdale just doesn’t seem to have this quality and therefore just can’t get near the ball if well placed.

I’m not sure if this can be coached or if it is just limited by his natural physical characteristics but it worries me.

Never known a keeper get so much stick and we’ve had far worse probably to do with the points tally but unbelievable considering how poor defensively we’ve been to blame it on the GK
It’s a lot of factors points tally, price tag, him replacing Henderson and sadly him being one of ours probably doesn’t help him. But I agree the fact he’s getting stick after yesterday when he wasn’t at fault for either goal is a bit much.

We seem to have had a long line of talented international youth goalkeepers who seem to struggle with similar aspects of their game.

Long
Willis
Eastwood
Ramsdale

All talented shot-stopped but weaknesses with other elements of their game. Is there a problem with the coaching?

The keeper is the easiest person to blame, the the defence, then the midfield/forwards probably the same.

Midfielders can make errant passes all game but it not lead to much, keeper is under pressure as even the smallest mistake is likely a goal.

Stayed on his line for the second goal when he could have commanded his area and made the ball his.

A good goalie only looks good when he has a good defence in front of him. A very good goalie looks good when he has a solid defence in front of him (Henderson) .A bad goalie is when you have a rubbish defence in front of you.
So when we get our defence sorted out and playing solid Ramsdale foam will definitely improve. A goalkeeper is only as good as his defence ⚔️

He was poor at Bournemouth last season too.

It's an odd signing in the sense that he's done nothing as a professional on the pitch to suggest he's worth anything, beyond the ability to register him as a homegrown player. Half a season in League 1 and 2, and a season where he looked poor in the Premier League.

At least Brewster actually looked decent in the Championship.

Yesterday the first 2 goals were headers from similar distances out (around the penalty spot) - their keeper got across and dived high and was unlucky that the rebound off the bar hit him. Meanwhile Ramsdale just flopped himself onto the floor as usual.

Oddly if Ramsdale had been playing for the opposition we wouldn't have scored our first goal as he wouldn't have got close enough to it for it to deflect in off him.

Also not sure where the idea he's "only 21" comes from, he's a few months off being 23...

Ramsdale is a young man who is still "learning" his trade. Various posts have mentioned his confidence which understandably is not the highest as the moment. His confidence affects the rest of the defence. This is amply demonstrated every match by the defensive errors. However, while I was surprised that Verrips wasn't tried in this cup tie I don't think the "worst signing ever" is accurate - the poster cannot have seen Chris Guthrie or Phil Thompson for a start - starting Ramsdale every match is beginning to look blinkered & rather hard on him. I believe that he will develop into a fine goalkeeper ---- eventually.

Definitely
He needs extra training to work on his weaknesses ie crosses

My main worry with Ramsdale is that his weaknesses are the basics - catching, diving and kicking! He does make some decent saves but I’m struggling to think of a game where he hasn’t made a mistake or two.

Hopefully he will improve but it was ridiculous to spend so much money on him.

What are his strength then besides sticking his tongue out every 5 seconds??
