Driving back tonight, unsure whether to feel frustrated or relieved at the draw I was instead annoyed at the embarassment that is Radio Sheffield's football coverage.
Towards the end of last season I stopped listening to Football Heaven, dismayed at the arrogant attitude of the presenters to both listeners and callers. People were getting treated like cretins (granted a few could legitimately be called that) but people who had reasoned structured arguments supporting views that didn't match those of teh superior three were cut off or treated incredibly rudely.
Tonight I found that standards had not improved. Andy Giddins is an embarassment. How can a man who has an inability to hold a conversation with a caller and knows so little about his area that he can think of no decent questions to ask, have a job in broadcasting? You can actually hear the panic as someone has finished their initial views and he desperately thinks of a question to ask or abrubtly cuts them off as he realises he knows nothing of any consequence and cannot maintain an informed discussion. Granted he wasn't at the Barnsley or Blades matches but surely he can get a briefing on teh key points of note from each match, even if some teaboy scribbles it down on a bit of paper.
Thankfully I didn't have to endure the pomposity of the resident Ice Hockey commentator, which just leaves Paul Walker. His interview with Blackwell was cringeworthy at times. You can argue that he is just doing his job, but to push Blackie into revealing his intentions on Fotheringham and Fortune (when he is watching tehm in the reserves tomorrow and as Blackie rightly pointed out the players will find out first) was pathetic and he was stonewalled well. As he was when trying to get the names of the Spanish trialists. At the end of the day I have no qualms with not knowing until the club and Blackwell thinks there is something we should know and if one of the Spanish lads is a bit useful then it's worth keeping everything under wraps.
Walker appears to want to play Agent Provocateur on certain issues, but I have noticed he only tries to wind managers (and noticably Blackwell in particular) up on the relatively minor issues that although interesting at the time are not the key things that wind fans up about the club/team/manager. Where there is a particularly strong/contentious issue affecting a club he toes a party line and maintains club relations. It's quite pathetic.
