Driving back tonight, unsure whether to feel frustrated or relieved at the draw I was instead annoyed at the embarassment that is Radio Sheffield's football coverage.

Towards the end of last season I stopped listening to Football Heaven, dismayed at the arrogant attitude of the presenters to both listeners and callers. People were getting treated like cretins (granted a few could legitimately be called that) but people who had reasoned structured arguments supporting views that didn't match those of teh superior three were cut off or treated incredibly rudely.

Tonight I found that standards had not improved. Andy Giddins is an embarassment. How can a man who has an inability to hold a conversation with a caller and knows so little about his area that he can think of no decent questions to ask, have a job in broadcasting? You can actually hear the panic as someone has finished their initial views and he desperately thinks of a question to ask or abrubtly cuts them off as he realises he knows nothing of any consequence and cannot maintain an informed discussion. Granted he wasn't at the Barnsley or Blades matches but surely he can get a briefing on teh key points of note from each match, even if some teaboy scribbles it down on a bit of paper.

Thankfully I didn't have to endure the pomposity of the resident Ice Hockey commentator, which just leaves Paul Walker. His interview with Blackwell was cringeworthy at times. You can argue that he is just doing his job, but to push Blackie into revealing his intentions on Fotheringham and Fortune (when he is watching tehm in the reserves tomorrow and as Blackie rightly pointed out the players will find out first) was pathetic and he was stonewalled well. As he was when trying to get the names of the Spanish trialists. At the end of the day I have no qualms with not knowing until the club and Blackwell thinks there is something we should know and if one of the Spanish lads is a bit useful then it's worth keeping everything under wraps.

Walker appears to want to play Agent Provocateur on certain issues, but I have noticed he only tries to wind managers (and noticably Blackwell in particular) up on the relatively minor issues that although interesting at the time are not the key things that wind fans up about the club/team/manager. Where there is a particularly strong/contentious issue affecting a club he toes a party line and maintains club relations. It's quite pathetic.

haha i am from manchester and i try and get to the lane as much as i can !
I still have not been this season. I was going to go on saturday against watford but was let down. But i love praise or grumble on radio sheffield. Is it still alive this season ? some peoples views on that amaze me haha

But i love praise or grumble on radio sheffield.

I love the way any time a Blade or Pig phones 606 on Radio 5, they always start their call with "It's a praise for" or "It's a grumble".

Couldn't agree more Shreds. Radio Sheff. coverage has been going downhill for a couple of years now.

Also have you noticed they regularly referred to the footy closed season as the "off season" and sometimes instead of attacking midfielders we get " offensive midfielders" !!

This is English footy - the yanks haven't taken over yet!

It's run by men, enough said for me. Arrogant in their opinions, hate any bugger disagreeing, never want to listen if it severly disagree's with theirs. Like to get a rise out of certain players/managers....due to them being biased.

If i hear Andy Giddings use the phrase: "...concertinaed in and around the middle third..." again i will launch my radio at the nearest by-stander.

Lets call a spade a spade . Paul Walker is a complete toss pot . His aspirations in life amount to making it to 5 live, to commentate on the bowls.

One look at him and you can tell he was the school turd but now tries to act the big "I am" with local managers as you correctly say in some "investigative agent procater way" but always bottles it . He'd rather try and be smart with K Mc than actually get stuck in to Mr "Empty promises" across the city.

And you know what? - I bet theres a paul walker clone in every local BBC station across the country .

I love footy heaven and praise and grumble but also get annoyed at the amount of callers who got cut off even though they have a valid point,If Giddens,Walker and Bennett dont agree with what you say they just give you shit then cut you off.

It's interesting if you travel to away matches to tune into the local BBC stations driving away from the game.

There isn't one time I have thought Radio Sheffield was better. The callers are given time to have a proper discussion with the presenter who actually knows what they are going on about. Admittedly, the coverage only usually focuses on one team, so there are less points to try and get across, but some of the phone-ins actually sound like interviews - the presenter poses intelligent questions to the fans who went to the game and are intelligent enough to put their point across well. This gives a far better view of the match to exiles than crowing imbeciles and presenters who love listening to themselves.

There's less "I wasn't at the game today but..." calls. I think other radio stations must screen those out and pick the sensible people. Radio Sheffield seems to try and be as controversial as possible so more often than not, picks the numpties. If you've got a sensible point and you get on, you can guarantee you won't be on long.

Praise or Grumble is an entertainment show, not a serious sports program.

It's like trying to compare Newsnight with Jeremy Kyle. The people at Radio Sheffield deliberately pick the worst callers and try and wind up everyone. From the punters that ring up to the Managers of the clubs.

It's awful. I can't listen to it anymore.

I very rarely hear Radio Sheffield these days living in Durham, but I did listen last night on the way back. It was apalling coverage, but I have to say, they have to put up with a lot of twonks who think they know everything going on behind the scenes. We even have the self proclaimed top football expert who unfortunately calls himself a Blade, Brian, to put up with. I think they (the presenters) should move on after a certain amount of time in local radio or they get too bogged down with it. They used to be ultra patient to all callers when they should have given them the James Whale treatment then. Maybe then they would be less iritated now??

I found myself cheering away in the car this evening driving down the A1 after Brian the 'Blade' lost his signal. Maybe he does it as a wind up but the airtime that bloke gets is beyond a joke, maybe why more reasoned callers stay away.

Brian the Blade is a tosspot - I believe they give hime the airtime to make Messrs Giddings, Bennett and Walker appear intelligent.
Giddings is at best a sactimonious git who derides anyone who doesn't have the same opinion and at least a village idiot!

Walker wasn't the 'school turd' - I was in his class at primary school and he's actually a pleasant and humorous individual (or at least was). Agree about the radio show though - it's shocking.

How come every night we have several 'Spireites'callers - surely they must have exhausted their entire fan base now!

Must be a case of "headphone fever" and power being the basis of evil etc.

I'd be a complete tw*t given half a chance with a radio mic presenting FH and would stay on air for about 2 minutes :)

PW pisses me off on t'wireless but I've met him a few times and he seems a nice enough bloke.

Here's one that will drive you insane... Andy Giddings. Try playing a little game of Count The "erms". I swear you'll want to shoot yourself in the knob just to stop yourself playing it once you hit 50 in 5 minutes.

I have an idea - Giddings covers Chesterfield and Rotherham, Bennet covers Wendy and Barnsley and Walker covers Doncaster - appoint a proper radio journalist to cover the Blades and let those three losers cover erm, erm, erm losers (exception of Donny - at least they play good football)

The first question they need to ask all callers before they let them loose on air is this one.
"Did you go to the match?" If the answer is no, then they need to follow up with "Then I'm sorry but you're not going on the wireless to talk about something you haven't seen. So fuck off."
They could leave the last bit out if they wanted.

Really good to hear other people's opinions on Radio Sheffield as I really think Football Heaven has really gone downhill in recent years too.

Pretty much agree with everything said by others...anyone who has a differing opinion to the presenters never gets any decent airtime or is just ridiculed. I understand that they have to maintain good relations with the clubs, but they can't expect every fan to say what a great job the manager is doing if they've lost ten games in a row.

I think we'd still have Robson in charge if we went on the opinions of those 'experts'.

Giddings is an utter joke, at least Bennett and Walker seem to have some knowledge of their subject area - he just seems completely lost & as others have already said, is very quick to end the call with those who have intelligent questions to ask.

Would also be nice if Radio Sheffield concentrated more on the Sheffield clubs...I know the station represents a wide area, but I feel that six clubs is far too many to cover and means we get stuck with the same old Barnsley whingers every evening...

Final gripe is the number of breaks during the shows...I think we've all gathered that Toby Foster is bigger at breakfast & why the hell do we need the stupid recap thing halfway through to tell us what's been said so far?!

Rant over :)

Oooh it gets my goat when they say "we haven't got time for your call" when they've tossed away half the time doing adverts for themselves and Toby (can't knock him, just the constant ads - is it in hos contract?) and I *hate* that recap bollox, just like TV programmes now - do they think we're all goldfish? It's especially crap on quiet nights when they've just got some whinging Spirite to try and extract some "highlights" from.

Rant over!

Why do people say "rant over"? Where did it originate? It's annoying, stop it.

Rant over.
