After the two bellies' bike ride with Ollessendro down from London to Crawley and a few pints in the Brewery Shades we made our way to the latest in a string of tiny stadiums which have defined our stay in the third tier of English football.

Crawley started brightly with United unable to keep possession for more than a few passes, much to the annoyance of Clough on the sidelines. The first chance came after Freeman gave away a soft freekick on the left; a decent delivery was floated in and boyhood Blade Kyle McFadzean forced a decent diving stop out of Howard.

United grew in confidence but required some luck in taking the lead as good work from Murphy ended in a poor cross. However, McFadzean could only help the ball into the middle of the area where Coady was on hand to fire home despite the home keeper getting a hand to the ball.

As the half wore on the chances were still few and far between - one snap shot from Crawley was well over the bar before a well worked freekick hit the side netting of Howard's goal and another shot from distance was dragged well wide.

The half time whistle came after a series of soft freekicks with United looking solid at the back but lacking much in the way of attacking threat.

The second half was slow to start with the only incident of note being a booking for Freeman after he slightly overran the ball driving forward from left back. There was general bewilderment amongst the United fans behind the Crawley goal as it seemed that Freeman had been fouled himself but the work experience referee thought otherwise. That was followed by a ludicrous advantage given to United as the ball broke to Coady who was surrounded by Crawley players after a bad foul on Murphy. After winning the ball back, Crawley countered in numbers and following a decent stop from Howard, Tubbs could only turn the rebound over the bar in what was a real let off for United.

Nature was calling so I made my way towards the facilities only to stop as Jamie Murphy decided to take on three Crawley players along the touchline. A quick turn sold them all before a cross that looked too deep was met by Coady on the volley for his, and United's, second goal of the night.

United then created a couple of half chances but needed someone to pull the trigger, the only shot of note being a daisy cutter from McGinn although we were denied a stonewall penalty when Freeman was brought down by Connolly. Deep into injury time the final chance saw another good diving stop from Howard after a Crawley player had found space in the middle of the area.

The final point of interest for United was the introduction of Connor Dimaio and Otis Khan for their debuts as Maguire picked up a booking which will rule him out of the next two games. Several long balls from Crawley were headed out by United defenders before the referee realised that he was in danger of missing his bedtime and blew the final whistle to end a very professional away performance.

Ratings:
Howard 8: solid under the high ball, some excellent stops with the only black mark being the occasional slice into touch.
Brayford 6: didn't get forward as much as usual but was up against a tricky customer in Clarke. Didn't look 100% fit.
Collins 7: one rick aside when he gave away a needless corner he was solid against an in-form Tubbs.
Maguire 7: the best defender on the pitch. Solid and unflustered, he seems to be enjoying the freedom to motor forwards with the ball.
Freeman 8: despite playing on the 'wrong' side, he defended well and got forward to good effect too. Should have had a penalty.
Davies 7: despite his natural position apparently being right midfield he looks better at full back.
Doyle 7: broke up play and move the ball well
McGinn 6.5: see Doyle but didn't contribute as much to the attack as perhaps he could have, given that he was playing further forwards
Coady 8.5: two goals were a just reward for a good all round performance
Murphy 8: worried the Crawley right back every time he got the ball. What a difference to the player I saw shin the ball out against Oldham on Boxing Day.
Porter 7: held the ball up well and linked up with the midfield but had absolutely zero attacking threat.

Subs:
Paynter 6: ran about, gave away a free kick, had as much attacking threat as Porter. Filling a shirt at the moment.
Dimaio n/a: brought on for the last minute to make his debut. Not sure he touched the ball but that doesn't matter.
Khan n/a: see Dimaio.

Referee 5: needs to study the rulebook as part of his homework.

Non-footballing highlight: meeting moDtheGod 's uncle in the Brewery Shades and falling off my bike down a Sheffield Wednesday sized hole in the road on my way to the station (had to get that in before the other boys do!).

Maguire the best defender on the pitch, yet gets a point less than freeman? Did you write this last night after a few two many sherbets?

How paynter gets pro contracts I don't know. Looks more suited to the Royal Oak XI than a professional team.

Just as a matter of interest, how can Harry be the "best defender on the pitch" but have an equal mark with Collins and a lower one than Freeman?

PS. Fuck you and your fast fingers HB.

It's fine margins in terms of Collins and Maguire; Freeman gets a better mark for his attacking work.

Funny how people see the game differently, as we debated in the ale house afterwards.

Thought it was a poor game last night and the 2-0 scoreline flattered the Blades. First half we were very poor. We looked disorganised and showed little threat. The goal came completely against the run of play, as Crawley were having a decent spell. They dominated possession and had a few chances. That said, they looked a bit toothless and were wasteful in front of goal. Howard made an excellent save early on (from the header at a corner) and then they hit the side netting (shat mi sen, as mi view was blocked and I saw the net ripple) and blasted a couple of shots over the bar. I did not feel like United were in control though and thought it was down to Crawley’s inability in the final third, rather than our solidity, and basically we got away with it a little.

2nd half we were a bit better and once the 2nd goal went in it was game over. It suits us when we go ahead, especially away from home, as we can get men behind the ball and break quickly. This worked for us and it was a counter attack that lead to the 2nd. Brilliant work from the impressive Murphy, who got the ball on the half way line and looked isolated. He proceeded to beat 3 men and then loop a cross into the box for Coady to score. It was an excellent late run into the box and a cool, calm finish.
I thought we lacked shaped and discipline a bit last night, but saying that we got men behind the ball well and made it difficult for Crawley. Going forward we struggled a bit though as McGinn offered nothing and Porter was woeful. The shining light was Murphy and everything we created came through him. I actually thought Coady was quiet, but got himself into good positions. He could have had a hat trick if it wasn’t for Porter and his rapist touch (Coady was clean through, but Porter over hit the pass to him).

Late on we could have had a couple more and had a stone wall penalty turned down. Right infront of the Blades fans (and 5 yards in front of us) Freedman was scythed down. The ref was not far away, but think he view was blocked. He bottled it and gave a corner, but he knew from the reaction of the 700 United fans (who all surged forward and went mental) and the Blades players (also all of them going nuts) that he had made the wrong decision.

Crimes against hoof

Crawley?! Thought they passed it around really well and looked comfortable on the ball. Critics would say that they lacked penetration and it was a bit like United under Weir. I often criticise Maguire for him hoofing it, but last night he passed it pretty well. He also made some of his maundering runs forward as well.

Crimes against football

Thought the whole spectacle was pretty shoddy to be honest, though it was brightened up by banter in the terraces and the Blades taking 3 points. Before the match I was joking and saying I would take a ‘Blackwellian’ performance and hoped that we would smash and grab. That’s exactly what we did. Not pretty, but effective. You need to be careful what you wish for!? Of course I would take that at any away game and would be happy for us to grind out results like that every other week!

Men of steel

Jamie Murphy was our main outlet last neet and showed some flair. He gave their full back a torrid time and his pace caused real problems. I thought Collins and Maguire did well and dealt with the aerial bombardment. Coady deserves a shout for 2 well taken goals. I was well impressed with Freedman. Get him signed up on a permanent deal. He is solid and gets forward really well. He supported Murphy well and should have had a penalty when he bombed into the box late on and was taken down. Howard also kept us in it with an excellent save at nowt a piece.

Clough

He just about got it right. Gave a couple of fringe players a chance, whilst keeping the core. The most important thing was having a very strong back 6. A back 4 of Brayford, Collins, Maguire and Freedman is very strong and with Doyle sitting in front not many teams will break us down at this level. I actually thought we were a bit disorganised at times and lacked shape. However his tactics of getting men behind the ball and hitting them on the counter worked.

Ale

One of the best performers of the night was North Yorkshire brewery’s Cereal Killer. An excellent ale that got supped a plenty by me n the boyz. A light, golden ale that was a tad hoppy and had a nice citrus taste to it. One of these nice spring pale ales that has a slightly bitter finish.

Olle’s final thoughts
Not pretty, but effective. The team worked hard and though the scoreline slightly flattered us, we deserved the points. We were more clinical and that is the bottom line. A bit of a smash and grab job, but who cares?!

Oh, not to forget the officials. The ref was a useless two hat. Looked like a school boy and refereed the game like one. He gave some bizarre decisions (booking Freedman when he looked like he'd been fouled for example) and gave some very soft decisions to Crawley. When Murphy got fouled and he played advantage it was ridiculous. It was in a good position and Murphy was completely isolated. The ref played 'advantage' and Murphy was crowded out, Crawley then countered and almost scored. They should have really scored and Howard made a decent save and they hit the post (I think). Then, later on when a Blades player was fouled and down injured he played the 'advantage'. Maguire booted it into the stand and he gave a Blades throw!? He was a clown. The penalty shout at the end was a very big one and he called it wrong. I was five yards away and it was a clear foul. I think his view was slightly blocked (he was on the eedge of the area, but the defenders body would have been in the way) but he gave a corner, suggesting he bottled it (or thought their player got the ball).

Atmosphere

Very flat from the home fans, but the Blades fans made a bit of noise. It was great being on the terraces and so close to the pitch. There was plenty of banter going on and quite a jovial atmosphere in the away end. One thing that irks me though; why do a bunch of grown men feel the need to chant at another grown man to ask him to wave? I find it embarassing. I kin hate it when the Blades fans cringingly shout "Cloughie, giz a wave". I did think the banter with their keeper was quite funny though.

It's only banter if the other person responds in kind. Quite a bit of it bordered on bullying to be frank. But some of it was pretty funny.

Good reporting Ollessendro. I take it there wasn't enough time to comment on the two young lads thrown on near the end?

I saw the clip of the game and Murf looked quality last night. Was getting worried that some clubs had sussed him out, but at times last night he looked magic.....oh, mustn't forget super Coady too UTB

For the first goal Murphy's skill made two Crawley players run to each other and falling down Keystones Cops style!

You'll not see many more clear cut penalties than that.

Outstanding work by murphy for the first and second goals, and the first goal was a much more difficult shot than I originally thought.

Quality run by the London blades to get in shot after the second too:)

There were elements of that leading up to Brayford's goal against Charlton! Murphy does have the capacity to make defenders look foolish.

A mention for Freeman as well. Already like what I have seen, versatile, good on the ball and a perfect age. Would definitely be trying to pin him down to a permanent contract, whether we can sign Brayford or not. Would allow us to keep Hill as purely CB reserve, which would be ideal.

Let's hope Derby get promoted then eh?

and surely Freeman should get the award for best defender as well then? well done Freeman you scored the highest mark, but lost to McGuire who was the best defender......... This is worse than Altervative Voting :o)

No. The best defender on the pitch was Maguire. The best all-round performance from a defender came from Freeman who got forward well, should have had a penalty but also gave away a few freekicks in dangerous areas. Maybe I should have given Maguire a 7.5 but that doesn't make that much difference really. I didn't realise that one throwaway sentence would cause so much confusion.

My view is that central defenders are there first and foremost to defend whereas full backs have an equal responsibility to attack and defend. If I split the back four's marks into attacking and defending elements maybe that would make it easier to follow?

Freeman: defending 7, attacking 8.5 - overall 8
Maguire: defending 8, attacking 7 - overall 7.5*
Collins: defending 7.5, attacking 5.5 - overall 7
Brayford: defending 7, attacking 6 - overall 6.5*

*added 0.5 to each with hindsight.

still don't get it......:o)

central defenders do a lot of attacking, esp at set pieces, look how many harry has scored this season, they have a responsibility for that as well. also by attacking full backs are in fact defending in one of the best ways they can, i.e. the best form of defence is.................. you've guessed it, attack!

anyway, thanks for the report, it's purely a trivial matter that a few of us picked you up on, you can justify it any way you like really as it was your scoring system. it just seemed odd to a few of us really.

What a different player Murphy is looking now...I notice both goals came from crosses made with his left foot, and before Cloughy came he never really went on the outside..always tried to cut in on his right.Great to see him bombing forward turning defenders..they don't know which way he's going now,as he can go either side.
Agree about Freeman looks a decent player..remember thinking the same when he played against us at Notts County behind Campbell Rice...Stonewall Pen aswell.
