If fleck turns out to be a corbynista, then he’s dead to me

“The socialism I believe in is everyone working for each other, everyone having a share of the rewards. It’s the way I see football, the way I see life.”
"At a football club, there's a holy trinity - the players, the manager and the supporters.
Bill Shankley

I can see so much of a parallel with Shanks and what Tufty says.
Thank feck we have in Chris Wilder a man with everyday, common-sense, working-class socialism.

The trouble is the CW project just might flounder on the corrupt neo-liberal money shitehouse that is the PL.

I think I know which way football fans would vote given the choice of
A) the PL status quo of their clubs being fully owned by overseas bent money oligarchs
versus B) a model where every club was supporters members owned.

Which brings me nicely back to Shanks quote above

Hodges best left foot ive seen from a Blades player, even Motson said it was magic. If he could have been arsed he could have been a super star with a top 6 club.

Still one of my favourite goals was the one at Forest in Cloughie's last home game. Controlled the ball with a touch on his right foot & curled it in with his left..... Bergkamp said* it was his inspiration for that goal at the '98 (?) world cup finals ....except he had to hit his with the outside of his right boot as he knew he wasn't as good as Hodges on his left.

Martin Pike...........

Could pick out a Bovril cup on row Z with unerring accuracy.

Great lad though and fond memories of him.:)

I wasn't sure if Bryson was left footed or not, I have memories of him using both. In search of evidence I came up with this, one of the most surreal nights I can remember at BDTBL. Absolutely no reason for not posting it even if it's not strictly relevant for the thread. Bryson got one with each foot so no solution for me though.

Has anybody seen a better central midfielder than John Fleck in this division yet?

Midfielders as good ? I’ll gi thee two, Duffy and Coutts both playing at Sheffield United, look on wiki

Yes, a very good player

Silent Blade, you know when people start a sentence with "with all due respect" and they go on to show they meant the opposite....

Well with all due respect, I never liked him and thought him lazy and inconsistent. I was in my early teens (1976-78) and much prefered the other lads who came through; Edwards, TK and even Stainrod. All about opinions, eh?

Bryson could use both feet but when it came to taking penalties he used his right foot. He scored with a penalty in the 5-4 win against Brighton and the winner at Barnsley in Sept and Oct 1989 respectively. His penalty in the FA Cup tie against Bournemouth was saved by Agana netted the rebound

Ronnie Simpson
Ronnie Simpson. There's a name from the past.
Couldn't head a ball to save his life; tackle shy; totally one footed - but what a foot !
Hottest left footed shot I've ever seen. I've seen defenders who put their heads in the way carried off with concussion.
Put some nice crosses over for Doc Pace to convert too.

His nephew, Paul, was also a left footer and came to us on loan

The enigma that was ..... Steve Charles !!

The enigma being was he average or very average.

Nice lad though !!

Great lad, I played badminton against Steve and his dad, Stan, many times in the Sheffield league

Edit: Regards the original post, I recall seeing Ronnie having a shot at the Kop end which was rocketing towards the top corner - Liverpool players dived for cover, and Doc Pace nodded it into the opposite corner. Think it was 3-0, perhaps Silent Blade might know?

One of the first names that I came across when I first started going to games.
Unfortunately my Dad's name for him was "Mary Ellen" so my memories of him are probably a bit biased :(

Your dad's name for him was pretty accurate. Ronnie was not a player who enjoyed the physical side of the game and liked to stay out of trouble on the wing. He wouldn't have lasted long today. Defenders would know all about his style of play and snuff him out of the game quite easily. But before the days of videos against a full back who at best only saw him a couple of times a season he was quite effective.

I am only 55!. Doc scored twice in the 3-0 win in Sept 1963. I was only 1!

I loved Hodges, that trick he did, never worked it out where he would have three or four players around him, little trick and he would run away from them...top player
