Hi Blades,

Thought I'd drop a post detailing the best places in Preston to get a decent pre/post game ale or two on Saturday, especially for those who are fans of the Rutland Arms, Beer Engine, Sheffield Tap etc.

I will also been dropping a list on my Twitter page @abeerinpreston and my Instagram page of the same name/handle will give you plenty of pictoral evidence of each ale haven mentioned below.

Plug & Taps (PR1 2NN) - Microbar approx 7mins walk from Preston Station serving modern cask and craft keg from across the UK and beyond via four pumps and ten taps. There are also two fridges with all kinds of special brews to drink in or for the train home. Lune Street Chippy is next door for the hungry and the PA system plays non-stop indie and britpop (you'll have to sort your own Es & Wizz).

Guild Ale House (PR1 1DD) - Preston's first ever micropub which takes a more traditionale approach to beer with seven pumps pouring perfectly kept cask beers of all styles and colours and six keg taps which inc Paulaner helles & weizen. The fridges pack in a mixture of craft, German and Belgium bottles/cans and flagons of traditional flat ciders. Chat is king with no music or TVs.

Orchard (PR1 2LA) - Thirty seconds walk from GAH is crafty sister micro Orchard located inside Preston Market. Ten keg taps and three cask pour the goods with a concentration on local breweries such as Chainhouse, Brewsmith, Rivington, Farmyard, Neptune etc. Food from the market's many outlets can be consumed on site.

The Black Horse (PR1 2EJ) - The first of two jewels in Friargate's beery crown is Victorian public house The Black Horse with its decor featuring William Morris wallpaper, open fireplaces, mosaic flooring and stained glass int/ext windows. Beer wise there are eight cask featuring a mixture of Robinsons and guest beers from the likes of Salopian, Tiny Rebel, Oakham etc with Veltins on tap alongside your usual 'brands'.

Plau & Once Was Lost (PR1 2EE) - Friargate's second sight to behold is Plau, a now Grade II listed building pouring cask and keg beer across 4 distinct floors including its infamous cellar bar complete with restored 16rh century well and outside in the 'Once Was Lost' courtyard bar. If you arrived to find the game off you could easily spend your day exploring this place whilst supping some top ale. Also serves a variety of food but not what I would call matchday fodder.

Vinyl Tap (PR1 7BE) - Beer, rock n roll and the würst menu in Preston are the themes you'll find in Vinyl Tap with six cask pumps and two keg taps (alongside your usual brands) and a plethora of vinyl LPs from ACDC to ZZ Top for your listening pleasure. A menu of bratwurst in various flavours and toppings awaits for those desiring some quality sausage action.

The Moorbrook (PR1 1RU) - My absolute favourite pub in Preston and by far and away the best drinking establishment anywhere near Deepdale which it is approximately 10/12mins walk from and even closer to where Blades coaches will be lined up on Moor Park. Seven cask pumps and nine keg taps adorn the bar pouring some sublime beer from across the UK alongside Paulaner, Bavo, Guinness and Becks Vier. The pub is also home to the infamous Moorbrook Pizzas which come in a dozen or so flavours alongside tasty sides (Menu). There is seating inside and out with big screens showing the early/late kick-offs whilst £2 will get your an all day parking space to the rear.

Hope you all have a good day bar between 3pm & 5pm.

Cheers for this I'm sure Ball_Sup (Phil) will have visited them all at least once.

Hopefully your pubs are more entertaining than your football right now!

Never mind all that rubbish, wheerz the Wetherspoons

Seriously, thanks for this, nice of you to take the time. Can’t say I’m a fan of these type beeers although I know plenty who are.

ps, I know where the Wetherspoons is really👍

Staying in Lytham St Anne’s for the weekend, and getting train to Preston for the game. This is much appreciated for our pre-match beers.
Hope you enjoy watching the best team in the championship at your place on Saturday. :)
BTW…how long is the walk from the centre to Deepdale?

What’s the catholic club like at the side of the ground although not sure yet whether we are heading to sunny Blackpool for a few.

Keeping options open and all that

I'd say 20 to 25mins depending on where you are in the town centre. If you do find yourself bedded in somewhere then a taxi should only be about £6-8 with AAA (01772555444) and Eagle (01772200300) both town centre based.

My personal route from the railway station would probably be Plug & Taps, Plau/Once Was Lost then Moorbrook but I'd happily sup in any of the above.

St Gregory's Catholic Club is just behind the away end. Not a fan myself but admittedly very handy for the ground.

Have to say WB that I get a bit like that.

If I’m not doing an away game I’m content with that decision but then as the match gets closer I see things like this and wish I was going.

Going tomorrow however and really looking forward to the ale and the match.

Do not let us down you mighty RAWW’s

You’re more evidence of why Preston is my favourite away day albeit the results aren’t always the best. Top man

We (me and Mrs G) always stay over when we play Preston, very fond memories of the place.

I can vouch for Plug and Taps, Black Horse and Guild Ale House. Can't remember if we have been in any of the others, but think we did Orchard as well, last time.

I will be trying all of the above, before, and after the game. Thanks for taking the time to inform us all!

Cheers!

We went in here before last season's game. It was horrific. Nobody should go in on Saturday... I'll be going just to make sure it's empty and I can get served quick...

You have to pay a quid to get in, but it's decent.

Thanks for that pnealefan , I can only vouch for The Black Horse, the landlord (Dan, not sure if he’s still there) helped out at our local beer festival (Edgworth) a few times before he went into the licenced trade, good bloke.

The last I knew, he was setting up a rooftop terrace, I don’t know if that happened, that was pre-covid.

Yeah Dan is still behind the bar at The Black Horse and the 'roof terrace' kinda happened, basically a glorified smoking area but nice enough area.

Thanks mate

No problem, sorry I was a tad short review wise, meant to include there is no cask or craft beer on at St Gregory's due to their lack of trade outside match days. You'll get the odd can/bottle of supermarket stuff like Wainwrights or Brewdog but nothing on tap.

"...The Moorbrook (PR1 1RU) - My absolute favourite pub in Preston ...."

Yep, just been in, great little pub and good beers. Traditional pub with stools at the bar, a small front room and a back room (maybe more?), if you like decent, well kept beers, give it a whirl, I think the most expensive cask on was around 4 quid (for the Bakewell Tart Stout, which I didn't try), will go back later tonight or tomorrow, after the game.

Always liked going to PNE. The ground still feels authentic and traditional with bags of history. Always a few young lads giving it out in the stand to the right of the away end which can be funny, fond memories of yellow jacket man 😂

My first visit was back in Sabella's day. Think we lost with scrapping on way back to Preston station and a whole lot of fun afterwards walking across Manchester with a train load of blades from Victoria to Piccadilly after City v Liverpool at Main Road.

Only downside is that the ground is a bit of a treck from the town centre and station. Is that pub still open next to the station at the top of the slope? Seems to be a favourite for away fans and the coppers put on buses outside the pub to take you to the ground. A word about the Preston coppers - They're much better organised than SYP but you can have a chat and a joke with them. Seen a few get knicked though as they don't mess about.

I can't travel tomorrow but will be there in spirit kicking every ball.

Called in for a few beers last night, Guns n Roses and Sam Fender were being played while we were there. Not very busy for a Friday night though, which is a bit worrying, the pub at the bottom of the road (Adelphi) looked to be rammed.

Good beers at Vinyl Tap, and friendly staff.

I’ve said this before the Preston cops have always had the best balance I’ve seen of humour and firmness on all my away trips. The buses are great too:)
