Preston fan in peace

I’ve not seen the Preston fan gloating or particularly derogatory about us.

I think Preston won fair and square, we simply weren’t at the races and our second string midfield just wasn’t good enough, and personally I thought that Carruthers was shocking and has proved himself to be a rare aboration in the transfer market by Wilder.

Coming away from the match on Saturday I didn’t have any complaints about being beaten fairly and squarely by a strong and solid Preston side who was better than us on the day and will be a top half side this season at the minimum. I think if they had won 3 or 4 nil it would have been a lot more fairer to them.

Think the op gives a fair assessment of the game. Preston definitely deserved the win and with better finishing could have had a few more in the 2nd half.

Personally I think both sides will miss out on the play offs but I said that about Bristol City too so I'm running out of teams who actually will make the top 6!

How many times have we read comments from other teams and moaned that they haven't given us credit for the victory. Like us, Preston are where they are on merit, saying otherwise is sour grapes.

Parts of it do read a bit patronising and gloat-y at first but I think it's pretty clear he's not on the stir. His assessment of the game is pretty fair, if anything slightly in favour of us. And he's ripping into the filth, which is a positive sign.

He's no Barry Blunt, that's for sure. Speaking of which, Baz seems to be a member on here no longer, which is a bit of a shame under the circs :-)

Thanks for that o.p., fair and accurate I suspect although I didn't go and listened to the commentary. On there Keith Edwards thought your team were poor, over-cautious and 'there for the taking' but I must say you looked very good on the extended highlights; balanced and controlled football with some cohesion.

Good luck. I think you have a good manager who summed it all up very well post game. I like the compliments he paid his players and their intelligence to adapt to Plans a,b, c or d if needed.

With the first half, you were slightly better but you didn’t create any chances really, both teams were poor. From 45-65 we bossed the game and could have scored several times. In the last 15 minutes you kept possession in our half but again failed to create. We deserved to win on the premise that we created more chances, albeit in a shortish period of time.
That's exactly how I saw it mate and how I reported it on here.

I had a good day out, despite the result.

Take care and good luck for the season.

Yeah,Stanneswhite calls it about right...I thought we were the better side first half without being that good, and thought they were there for the taking.
Second half they outplayed us,and looked like adding to the score...we didn't look like scoring, nothing was coming off, kept losing possesion, looked ragged and couldn't create anything or break them down....They ran out deserved winners...We just had to many key players out.

How is it?

The OP stated we were the better team for 70 mins... Not me. I thought we were awful throughout.

Despite that, they never really looked like scoring (neither did we), and they scored straight after a substitution where we were defending.

You never make a sub when defending. It's asking for trouble as you lose shape and the players switch off... Which happened on Saturday.

It had 0-0 written all over that game.

Don't bite. Look at his joining date. Is he really one of us?;)

It was a useful game for us as it showed how poor our backup players are.
It's hard to get too excited about a cold Saturday afternoon game in Preston and the match fully lived up to expectations by being a bit of a dreary, long ball, cloggy hoof-fest.
Preston worked hard for their win and deserved it but a house brick has more flair, and the Blades were a mere shadow of the exciting team we've been watching for the last 18 months.

Sorry this is slightly late, just wanted to come on here and give a match review of how the game went on. First half was largely a non starter, best chance was when our keeper decided that he wanted to give Clarke a chance to add to his goal tally ( and he should have). But if anything you’s were the better team. Second half and Alex Neil had clearly bollocked the players and we could have gone 2 or 3 up very quickly. We did eventually score but couldn’t add another and for the last 15-20 you were the better side. Wilder brought Donaldson on and although he contributed little he forced us to be more defensive. Overall I think we were the better side and we’re good value for the three points.

Regarding your current injury rut, eventually you will be fine. I’m not sure if any of you are aware but we went through the injury crisis of all injury crisis’ earlier on in the season. We lost 11 players to injury including 7 defenders. We lost four of our five fixtures ( similar to yourselves)Two of our best players ( Cunningham and Maguire) are still out now. However when players returned to fitness we picked up and have won 4/5 now. When your players come back to full fitness, your results will inevitably pick up. Your current problem is that your second string midfield is nowhere near championship level, and you are trying to adjust the entire team to accommodate it. A fully fit Sheffield United team would not be on the run you are on. However, Wilder is an excellent manager. His attacking substitutions will pay off big style, our manager is similarly attacking opposed to Grayson and we have won many more points because of it. People need to realise that draws are almost useless in this league and Wilder’s constant attacking will keep you up the league and is what got you there in the first place. You only have to look down the road at your deluded neighbours to see how far defensive Football gets you in this league. You will finish somewhere between 5th and 10th which will be a tremendous achievement and above your rivals ( who won’t make the top half) when you consider the money they have spent that is a great achievement from you’s. Hopefully we can make the playoffs, as can you and we can get revenge for the last time we met.

Nice post. Yeah I remember you guys slumping a bit an a Preston fan mate said you'd taken a few injuries. Best of luck for the rest of the season.

All in all, if we go about things the sort of way that Preston have since getting back up into the division - buying/loaning cleverly (Pearson for £100,000!!), increasing the depth & quality of the squad, maintaining reasonable budgets - then we'll be doing it the right way.

They're a fine club, & they're on an upward trajectory (after having first stabilised in the division) for a reason. How to compete with the Big Boys without being a Big Boy...
