More of a muted conference after the first one back last week. Best probing questions again from Stu.

1. Ings back in training. Davies has 45 mins under belt. No injury concerns other than Brooks who rolled ankle and is out
2. Said around half a dozen times stern conversations have been had with the players. They need to compete.
3. Some positive signs from Charlton. Surprisingly said SUFC stats showed they out performed Charlton. Not sure on what?
4. Players have been confused with previous messages they have received. Presume thats a dig at the previous manager.
5. Didn't want to talk much about Oxford wants to focus on getting a result.
6. Strongly defended decision to appoint Ramos as a coach. CW would not bring someone in unless it was his say so. Has known Gui for a while. Would have taken him with him if he'd gone to another club. Ramos brings experience of different cultures, playing styles and leagues.
7. Tanganga was picked as Captain because of his calmness and ability shown at Millwall.
8. CW was rightly prickly with Hall for asking a stupid question about how Hamer took the captains decision. CW said it wasn't his job to keep every body happy.
9. Mee is building his fitness up, Hasn't had much game time so far. Doesn't want to risk throwing him too early and cause a set back. So sounds like he won't be in the frame for starting tomorrow.
10. CW acknowledged he had been too optimistic in assuming the players could turn it around after a poor run of results. May be a grind next 2 or 3 weeks as getting a result takes priority.
11. Disappointingly no one asked a question about formation change.

Thanks fort the summary. Very good.
Point 3 - does Wilder mark 3 now take notice of stats. How has he managed to get them back out of someone’s arse?

Thanks Addison.
Re 11: clearly the interviewers don't read this forum, or they think we're all know-nowts. But you would think they would at least ask about chance-creation if not formation.

So this wasn't Wilders choice 🤔

He referred to ‘competing’ and the stats around how we competed.

I’d say the lack of saves made by their keeper suggests we didn’t compete very well, but what do I know?

I also think the bloke who said “you can stick your data” probably shouldn’t refer to stats when what we all saw with our eyes doesn’t correlate to us ‘competing’ with Charlton in any way. The reason they scored is because we’re soft as shit and don’t make tackles and put our bodies on the line in the way other teams do. That should be the basis for any kind of performance, particularly with Wilder in charge.

He might be referring to the stats for "duels"--we won more than they did, both on the ground and in the air. By every other meaningful statistical measure (shots on target, big chances, xG) they were the better team.

Definite general impression I got from the Presser was the vibe. Gone from good cop to bad cop. Was noticeably less chipper than last week. In fact he seemed quite grumpy and matter of fact.
Looks like the plan to big the players up and massage their egos didn't work so he's now trying the boot up the arse method.

Thanks to Addison for the summary. Here's my more detailed notes, some of which is my interpretation of what was said.

Interviewer 1: Andy Giddings, BBC Radio Sheffield

Injury update: firstly, Wilder wanted to pay tribute to the club and the fans who turned out in numbers and got behind Wilder and the players. Disappointing to not get a win but these times “won’t last forever” and noted that the players may “need to toughen up”.

Tom Davies played 45 for the U21s and Danny Ings has trained all week so there are decisions to be made on both; Wilder is a big believer in experience being crucial in these tough periods. “Not time to experiment or chuck a young ‘un in unless we think it’s right”. Brooks injured his ankle yesterday and is out of tomorrow's match.

Wilder aware that it would be “reckless” to throw the returning players straight in. Suggests that Ings was rushed, causing his hamstring injury. Tom Davies came back in “tip top condition” for preseason then “tweaked a calf”: not entirely sure that’s good news given that it kept him out for two months!

Players were down after getting beaten at Ipswich and the coaching staff took an arm round the shoulders approach. Sounds like that has changed this week, “sterner message, we have to come out of this sooner rather than later”. Wilder’s view is that on the stats we competed more against Charlton (said that the stats put us “third or fourth rather than bottom”), first 20-25 minutes was OK but then it became frantic; but reiterated that the approach was frantic. We have to make good decisions, bring some calmness to our play; Wilder said that the messaging before he joined was confusing and has been simplified.

The first result will be a big one; there have been player meetings and the onus is on the players to turn this round now. It’s important for the club, players and mostly the fans that we put a big performance in. Suggests that the division has been more unpredictable with Oxford struggling in the first few games but then getting two unexpected results against Leicester and Bristol City. We will like a fire at some point.

On Guilherme Ramos: Wilder “wouldn’t employ anyone on his coaching staff” unless he chose to. Namechecked Alan Knill and Matt Prestridge: said that there has been an improvement in Hamer and Campbell this week, inferring that they weren’t fit enough. It’s important that there is a pathway from the academy, hence Micky Collins being promoted but Wilder is keen to get new inputs from the coaches and that’s where Ramos comes in. Wilder says that wherever he ended up, he’d have looked to bring Ramos in – that suggests that at the very least he was touted from January onwards.

Interviewer 2: Dan[ny Hall, Sheffield Star (?)]

New coaches and new faces freshen things up. We changed the way we played last season to what was a successful system. Mixing new ideas with “right school” approach.

Tanganga was given the captaincy based on his calmness and maturity. He has impressed everyone from last season with Millwall, setting the standards and leading by example. No conversation with Hamer about taking the armband off him, “let’s not get precious about being captain or not, being in the side or not”. Wilder “hasn’t got time to rub anyone’s head” as we’re underperforming both individually and collectively; yet more talk about “getting into the players” this week. I’d imagine that Shirecliffe has been somewhat uncomfortable this week.

Ben Mee is another one who’s not had a preseason and therefore isn’t match fit and it would be risky to throw him into the deep end. 60 minutes in the U21s is good but it’s nowhere near the intensity of the Championship and we have to make sure it’s right for the player and the club. Every player has the chance to impress Wilder when they’re in Monday to Friday.

Interviewer 3: Stuart [Rayner, Yorkshire Post?]

Injury management takes input from coaches, medical staff and the players knowing their own bodies. “The three boys [presumably Ings, Davies and Mee] would stick their hand up” but they need to be managed. Arblaster is used as an example of a younger player’s approach, he’d stick his hand up tomorrow if asked but we need to be careful with him. We don’t want reoccurrences of injuries, we have to be careful.

All players have to take responsibility for their own performances and for where United finds itself. Everyone wants to win every match but we have to acknowledge that we’re in a tough period and some of the younger players may be defined by this spell. Wilder namechecked Peck who’s not really had to face an adverse period; if a player “goes missing” it’s the worst thing that can happen to a team. The players are paid well to uphold standards through the week but ultimately they need to turn up at 3pm on Saturday.

Football is a “cut-throat industry”. We’re not winning games so there’s no arm round the shoulder; there have been some positive messages but it’s been a lot of home truths to professionals who are paid to win games of football and haven’t been doing so. The signs on the training ground have been good; however, maybe Wilder was over-confident in turning it around immediately. The next two or three matches may be a bit of a grind, we need a result and that has to be the priority.

Good work. Thank you
