We've joined an elite list of teams to have lost by 8 or more goals.

Man Utd, Newcastle and Chelsea have dished it out twice.
Randomly Southampton have been involved in 3 - two defeats and one win.

The full list is here:
  • Man Utd 9-0 Ipswich (1995)
  • Newcastle 8-0 Weds (1999)
  • Spurs 9-1 Wigan (2009)
  • Chelsea 8-0 Wigan (2010)
  • Chelsea 8-0 Villa (2012)
  • Southampton 8-0 Sunderland (2014)
  • Man City 8-0 Watford (2019)
  • Southampton 0-9 Leicester (2019)
  • Man Utd 9-0 Southampton (2021)
  • Liverpool 9-0 Bournemouth (2022)
  • Sheff Utd 0-8 Newcastle (2023)
Mad to think that all but 2 have come in the past 15y with only 2 occurring in the first 16y of the PL. Is that evidence of the top-6 gulf and wealth that's crept into the game?

As a side note - an Ipswich fan I know text me during the game - "Mate, they're taking this piss. This must be tough for you to sit through". Nah, i'm loving it pal. It's amazing 🥴

I replied afterwards with - "At least we didn't concede 9, imagine conceding 9!"

The reply back was:
"That was a different time, paper thin squad against the best team of the Premiership era."

That's fine then. Not embarrassing at all.

Interestingly:
  • Ipswich - 22nd - Relegated
  • Wednesday - 19th- Relegated
  • Wigan - 16th- Survived (both these losses were in the same season)
  • Villa - 15th - Survived
  • Sunderland - 16th- Survived
  • Watford - 19th - Relegated
  • Southampton - 11th - Survived
  • Southampton - 15th - Survived
  • Bournemouth - 15th - Survived
So only a third of teams subjected to a tonking like this have actually gone down in that season.

Is this encouraging? Probably not, as it's relatively meaningless, but our season isn't going to be defined by this game.

I'm now pretty sure yesterday was actually a management masterclass from Hecky, because he knew statistically it'll help us finish in a safe position. Smart, very smart. Nobody else considered this.

Re the four 9-0s, 3 of the reverse fixtures the same season were won by the team that lost 9-0
