Just having a war of words with a piggy fan who doesn't like the fact we averaged over 30K in the premier league and they didn't achieve this.
He states we regularly gave away 2000 free tickets per game. Fact or fiction please. Sadly my memory doesn't serve me well in this area.

He's the one making the allegation, it's on him to prove it.

I love how wound up the grunters get over this subject, they just can't handle it!

Wendy have never averaged over 30,000 in a season since 1968. We did that twice since 1968 (1971-72 and 2006-07)

Absolute garbage. I didn't have a season ticket and wouldn't have paid for my tickets if there were freebies doing the rounds.

The pigs hate that 30k stat, but the one that really crushes them is that they haven't averaged 25k this century. Their highest was 24,855 (1999-2000) and that was in the Prem (with a big away end!).

I was talking to a pig on holiday the other day and he was quite embarrassed by their ticket prices and even mentioned how good our support seems to be at present.

We got over 17k vs Colchester and they brought around 60 fans. They got around 20k vs. Middlesbrough who brought 4k..

Oh yeah, and they are in a division higher. Forgot about that.

What was their highest average when they were in the Prem?

29,560 in 1992

http://www.european-football-statistics.co.uk/england.htm

They finished 3rd that season having been promoted and won a cup the season before.
Arguably, they will never have a season that good again but they still couldn't average 30,000

The season after that they finished 7th, played in Europe, reached two cup finals. Average attendance 27.263

1991-2 wasn't a Premier League season. It was the last season before the change.

Never mind, they'll get 30k+ v. Arsenal, aided and abetted by a massive build-up on Radio Pig and in The Stir. They'll no doubt have an offer ('buy an Arsenal ticket & get next home match half-price' - about £30 :D) and they can drone on for the next twenty years about how Massive they are...

Do you know how bored I am by the 'who's got the biggest crowds' bollocks?

Of course I understand that when inter club rivalry rears it's head almost anything will suffice in order to score a point - surely just focusing on us and what we do is enough isn't it? The lady-boys of S6 don't enter into anything even vaguely resembling my interest in football, and I just wish we'd make the type of progress that would put this sort of nonsense to bed.

If I'm allowed one hope, it's that we manage to achieve promotion and then set about a period of consolidation for a season or four (I think it'll take at least that to achieve any ambitions of achieving promotion to the Prem), then just possibly the squad will have improved, we'll have better players upon which to build some realistic hopes, Adkins (or whoever's in charge) will have gotten rid of the chaff, and our prospects might just look a little rosier.....well a bloke can dream, can't he?

FWIW...

Overall AVERAGE since 2000
SWFC 21776. SUFC 21375

So, what does this tell us??? Nobody gives a shit?!??!?

To be serious about it - It tells us that SWFC are better supported than the SUFC.
Over the past 15 season we have been in a higher division to Wednesday on 4 occasions. They have been above us for 3 (soon to be 4).
One of our seasons was the premier league and has quite obviously skewed the results

Matt,

Our restricted stadium capacity and restricted away end also skews the results.

In our PL we me have averaged 35K if we had the 39K capacity like SW. Also remember our away end held 2,990 not the 6K at Hillsboro.

Stats can infer almost anything.

Let's class an attendance at least 95% of a stadium capacity as being a sell out then

Since the war (70 years) United have had more sell outs than Wednesday.

wednesday are massive.. i don't know why Alien even bothered arguing.. of 'course' they're bigger than us. they're massive innit?

I'm sure the away team had both upper and lower when we were in the Prem? I can't remember it ever being restricted during the Premiership season.

This is what gets ignored all the time, the stadium capacity, and one reason why I would really like us to add about another five or six thousand to it around the ground. Preferably by redeveloping the kop.

Sure the atmosphere would be shit in the third division like we are now. But get back to the top flight it would be needed and used. In our recent Prem season our average would have been around the 35k mark, a relegation season at that.

If we have ambitions of being an established top club the capacity HAS to be increased, and the time to do it is before we get there, not after.

No they didn't. I used to swap my kop season ticket to sit up there on a regular basis.

And, in the 2006-07 season, we only gave the away fans the BLUT while we had the lower. If we had been struggling for crowds enough to give away 2000 freebies, we could have let the away fans have all of the BL end. We didn't. Man. U, Chelsea, Spurs etc. only got the upper tier.

So, as ever, the piggy fan is talking bollocks.

What so that one season we had in the premier league in the last 15yrs puts us behind? How so? Let's say we had averaged 35k in that premier league season not 30.5k our overall average over the 15yrs would still be 21,674 (lower than SWFCs).

For the period compared above we have been in the same division as SWFC for 8 out of the 15 yrs and neither of us were filling our grounds. So unfortunately, the basis of this argument - size doesn't matter.

Over the 8 seasons when we were in the same division it is much closer - SWFC avg 21599. SUFC avg 21555.

In the 3 seasons following our relegation from the prem we averaged 25k+ since then it has dwindled down obviously.

Hate the attendance debate between the fans but I don't get how they can claim anything when the facts are there. Can't wait to wind my piggy work mates up when they next bring this topic up.

For a city having 2no clubs , devoid of success for many a year , the attendances at both S2 and S6 are excellant . The big ticket for me is get out of this division , and show them who is top dog in the city , not in attendances but were it really counts - football.

No we didn't. We gave Liverpool both upper and lower for first game and there was uproar. After that away fans got lower tier only. There was/is a Premier League requirement to give 3000 tickets to away fans and the BLUT did not hold that many but we got away with it by giving lower tier.

typical owl retreat , they know its true we got 30k legit and its their defence mechanism
they only had 30k gates at hillsborough in last 10 yearsplaying us or at games where theyve only charged 10 quid
only difference is thats a fact

why would we give away 2000 free tickets we sold out our allocation the only times it dropped was when teams like blackburn only brought a few
tell him to show you any proof we offered rthousands of free tickets , it would have been in Star

like when wednesday pñayed palace the 10 quid offer

I seem to remember the uproar on Porktalk when we only gave the pigs the lower tier as we could sell out BLUT as well as the rest of the ground, were they not saying we should only get the lower tier of Lepers lane as reprisals ?
