Pre-Match View From Walsall

Such is the air of despondency from the Walsall fans it's difficult not to have a degree of empathy with their plight. They see no light at the end of the tunnel, they can almost predict a decline with no end, and I must admit to understanding this dreadful state of affairs. I hope we win but that they somehow end up with a change of fortune after we play them.

So they've worked out Flo Cauliflower quickly then...? ;)

Bit of a giveaway when he turned up to sign...................

A Wallace situation for them. It's remarkable that in summer 2014 when Clough was considering who to sign, he saw a promising though consistently injured central midfielder in Cuvelier, who had signed a 3 year contract with us on a decent wage, and rather than view that as a warning he instead signed Wallace on a similar deal.

Gotta feel a little for Walsall, I think they have been a little like the Southampton of League One in recent seasons in that they keep losing their best players but keep managing to replace them and improve. A few years ago they had Brandy (he was good at the time), Paterson (now at Bristol C) and Will Grigg (Wigan) up front before they were all sold. And now their three best players from last season have all been snapped up by Championship clubs - Henry and Sawyers to Brentford & Bradshaw to Barnsley. Looks like this time they haven't managed to source decent replacements...

Oh it's so unfair isn't it - why can't every single club in the country prosper at the same time?

Walsall are barely punching below their weight - they're scraping by in the third division. They've just not got the right manager. Why should we give a shit about them or anyone like them?

Thing is Herbert, it is Herbert isn't it? If everyone shared your lack of empathy and imagination all we'd end up with is a mindset that says bugger everyone else and don't give a damn for anyone else. Now, I'm prepared to give you the benefit of the doubt and imagine that somewhere beneath that deep, dark , unsympathetic facade there exists a little part of you that is capable of understanding why others sometimes need a helping hand.

I daresay that Walsall will slide to an inevitable jump into Div 2. Does it mean that I don't empathise with their supporters? Not at all. If you genuinely have a hostile attitude to other clubs, or perhaps that should be supporters, who are faced with nothing but doom and gloom, then I can appreciate what they're going through. Am I glad we're not in their position? You betcha. But there again, I am one of those caring types who sometimes give a few coins to someone who's homeless (I know, silly of me to care), or helps at a homeless kitchen every so often. Perhaps it's best if we just allow other clubs go to the wall, and of course they'll be replaced, so who cares, uh?
What goes around comes around, and when the clubs in the Premiership decide to abandon the other divisions, we won't have a leg to stand on, will we? We'll moan, talk about heritage etc, but by then it'll be far too late......but we won't care, will we Herb, we're the 'mighty' SUFC and, according to your sentiments, we shouldn't care about other supporters, or their clubs.

Precisely the sort of response I expected from you.

I don't like to see cases like Blackpool - they've been truly shafted. But Walsall? They're simply not going too well on the pitch at the minute, nothing more. They almost got promoted just last season! Not every club can succeed at the same time. You need to understand that. It's football.

I don't think realising this makes me an unsympathetic monster.

I believe Clough is currently being blamed for the recent flooding in Stalybridge, Russia's invasion of the Crimea and the plight of Syrian refugees. Is there no end to the shit people will chuck in his direction?

You don't think he has any responsibility for us having a player on our books for three years who has hardly played due to injury, having had a very visible track record of injury troubles at the club we signed him from (pointed out at the time he signed)?

There is a load of stuff Clough gets unduly criticised for. This, and signing about three right-backs too many, are on the other hand pretty justifiable criticisms.

Do you think he signed the bloke thinking "haa haa, this will fuck things up royally?" Hindsight is great to have but I don't remember everyone giving it "don't sign him" when he came in.

I do think that, I also think he grew a moustache he could twirl and go "mwahahahaha" whilst he was doing it.

As I recall, given we'd missed out on Coady and the deal for John McGinn didn't materialise, we were generally just relieved to get someone vaguely promising in. Add in the fact that the deal was originally reported by Clough and others as being 2 years plus an optional third, we would have also thought this gave us some protection at least should his injuries return. Had that been the actual deal he signed, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

“Well we smashed them 2-1 in the Waste-of-Time Trophy. Let’s try that again!”

How do you smash a team by 1 goal?

Probably tongue in cheek given the general tone of the comment.
