A while ago....it's nearly 150 years ago.

The last major thing we won was nearly 90 years ago, they've put 60 years on that.

If they're not the very definition of beige, then they're magnolia or mushroom white.
They've won a major trophy more recently than us (1938 FA Cup) and reached a final more recently than us (1964).

I know I might be taking this comment a bit too literally but here goes:

In 1888-89 Preston won the League without losing a game. (I remember this from reading about the history of football as a kid.)

While I was fact-checking my sometimes dodgy memory, I learned they also won the FA Cup that season without conceding a goal.

Before that in 1887 they also beat Hyde 26-0 in the FA Cup, which is still the largest margin of victory in an English League or Cup game.

Ok. While double fact-checking this I also learned that 1888-89 was the first League season.

Looking at that table:
  • all those teams are in the League (Accrington are the only ones who have dropped out and returned?)
  • half the teams are in the Championship this season
  • and Everton finished just above the relegation places
(TBF all of this is a while ago, but history is a while ago. Preston are a team with an important place in the history of football.)

The Accrington team is not the same one as the team currently in league 2. The original team went out of business in 1893 after they were relegated (which happened after we beat them in a "test match" to determine promotion and relegation).

Notts County (2019-23) and Stoke City (1908-15) have had spells outside the league. Everyone else is ever present in the league/PL.

All 3 of our fellow record-holders, as the only other sides to have won all 4 divisions, are in that table too.

I love and hate it when people talk in ignorance based on nothing more than lazy cliches.

"Sheffield United splashing the cash again, so boring having the same clubs going up and down every season. Parachute payments really are a joke, gives teams like Sheffield United and Burnley a huge advantage!”

Not really, we've sold players to generate the £4.5mil that we've spent on fees, even then we've received triple that back in sales. The rest of our signings have been free agents or loans largely financed by the 14 players who have left the club, who's wages have been freed up."

Talking out of their arses!

Cheers for this.

Every day is a school day.

Just shows you that you can't believe everything you read on the internet. But as a fan of a club that is "splashing the cash again" I would like to ask ..."on whom?"

All is well in the world when Royston chips in and you have spent all morning musing over what new on trend football designer wear to launch tonight at Deepdale 😍
I have a semi just contemplating the trip from Bury

Lord help us if we’ve got empty seats in our end…The truffle hunters will be squealing with delight.
