I know I might be taking this comment a bit too literally but here goes:
In 1888-89 Preston won the League without losing a game. (I remember this from reading about the history of football as a kid.)
While I was fact-checking my sometimes dodgy memory, I learned
they also won the FA Cup that season without conceding a goal.
Before that in 1887
they also beat Hyde 26-0 in the FA Cup, which is still the largest margin of victory in an English League or Cup game.
Ok. While double fact-checking this I also learned that
1888-89 was the first League season.
Looking at that table:
- all those teams are in the League (Accrington are the only ones who have dropped out and returned?)
- half the teams are in the Championship this season
- and Everton finished just above the relegation places
(TBF all of this is a while ago, but history is a while ago. Preston are a team with an important place in the history of football.)
