Pre-Match View From Ipswich

I thought this would have passed by now to be honest, I believe it stems from the late 90's when we beat them in the play offs and also due to Mauricio Tarrico who dived for a penalty when we were 2 - 0 up and got the pen. The game finished 2 - 2 and our fans were understandabily miffed about it. That was in the same season as the play offs when they came to the Lane and drew 1 - 1 when Jan-Aage scored for us and Micky Stockwell for them. They were very confident that they would get through in the second leg - after all all they needed was a 0 - 0 draw to go through on away goals and of course they were at home.

But they didn't realise that we hadn't read the script and Andy Walker equalised (despite the most blatant push you'll ever see on Walker) and we went through on away goals!

Presumably Ipswich still harbour a grudge even though it was them and not us that cheated in the League game. I believe they called us the Norwich of the North then. We on the other hand didn't seem to be as bothered.

I was at the home leg, I don't remember ever having La Bamba as goal music!

The away goals rule as it was then was a nonsense. Ipswich played at home second leg as they'd finished above in the league. But that's also the leg that goes to extra time. In domestic games, unlike in Europe, away goals only count after ET. That means that there's the possibility that the away team second leg, which finished lower in the league, gets an extra thirty minutes to score an away goal.

Unusually we were the team to benefit from this, but it seems unfair. Then again, I'm very much of the opinion that the away goal rule is no longer fit for purpose and should be scrapped entirely.

Alan Nixon has also just responded to a Wednesday fan asking if they’re up shit creek to say “be prepared for a surprise”

Hopefully there’s some meat to this

That could also mean, "be prepared for a nice surprise", which would probably be some spozzy good luck, just like when they were minutes away from being closed down by HMRC and Milan turned up.

Nixon says it's not bad news but bizzare news. Apparently something unprecedented.

I’m sure whatever happens Nixon will claim it was exactly what his cryptic cover-all-bases tweet had suggested all along...

Yep there's Nixon telling us exactly what will happen again.
