Pre-Match View From Burton

I was in a pub this week and ran into former Blade Lyle Taylor, and had a conversation with him about his time at t'Lane under Clough among other things.

He said that Clough arrived with a reputation for having no time for Black players and he felt completely frozen out by Clough. Also said that 3 of the United players of the time were openly racist, and a couple of others were kind of in same clique so were unpleasant to him (without being racist) because their mates didn't like him.

He seemed to still have affection for the club, though was obviously sad about how it all went, and was massively impressed with us last season, said that Bramall Lane was like a different place to those days (which we all know). He also spoke very positively about George Long who he said has been fantastic for AFCW. Seemed a nice guy, intelligent and opinionated, and suspect he'll be leaving Wimbledon for better things either in transfer window or next summer.
So did he give any examples of this and did he name any of the players?

It would be very disappointing if any of them were still here.

It must be true if someone’s said it. Oh, and someone’s heard it as well? That’s a clincher and no mistake.

Clough also bullied young model pro De Juve and fell out with a couple of mediocrities, none of whom were remotely to blame themselves in any way whatsoever.

Oh and he sarcastically repeated the sunburn bollocks from Maguire and his greedy agent, didn’t he?

Wicked man.

I'd be a lot more inclined to believe this if a player who had gone on to better things had said it.
Always a great excuse if you fail.

Nasty Nige sabotaged De Girolamo's career!

There's no doubt in my mind that if it wasn't for Nigel Clough he'd now be an integral part of Man City's first team, keeping Kevin De Bruyne on the bench.

I thought he bullied De Girolamo because he wore a cap back-to-front. It hadn’t even occurred to me that it might have been because of his foreign-sounding name. Had he been called Derek Geraldson he could have gone on to greatness.

“Hanson–Clarke–Donaldson–Sharpe, a very aggressive front line, who are scoring a lot of goals"

Four up top, Hansen and Sharp(e) as wingers...

To quote the esteemed Frederick Mercury: "Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?"

If this is true its completely shocking. Being fair to Clough though he froze white players out too. Also signed and handed debuts to people of colour JCR, Otis Khan etc so the race argument which existed whilst he was here aswell, is difficult to believe.

"Realistically – A loss is expected. But, you never know, Sheffield seem to falter away from home (a little…), and we have managed to look much better in the past 3 games."

Could that be the other 'Sheffield'? They are crap away from home as well as at home.

Perhaps if there were some way of differentiating between us we could avoid this confusion?

If only we had suffixes to our names that helped explain how we were formed from a cricket and football team, or the other lot who were formed on Woden's day.
There is no "other" Sheffield..

There is only one and it's neither us or S6 - the oldest club in the world

Wasn’t the decision to loan out JCR though an altogether odd one at the time? Coupled with freezing Collins out of the squad (despite the lack of centre backs), it was difficult to really work out what was going on off the pitch.

Only Freeman, Long and Reed are still attached to the club from that time so I think it would be very unlikely.

"Sheffield" :rolleyes:

Only one mention of us as 'Sheffield' though so not bad for these pre-match view threads.

I liked the spelling of Coutts and Coults (which is really hard to say, go on try it...out loud).

So, you're saying that we shouldn't just accept this as fact, which is fair, but you're accepting it as fiction in the same way. Not like you to have huge double standards. It's like the way people who accuse others of sexual harrassment have been treated with a default assumption that they're lying. Thankfully that's happening less these days but to dismiss Lyle Taylor's claims straight off the bat without anything to back up your claims that he's lying is quite typical of you.

Mmmm...

BUT, the original "racist" post merely says "Clough had a reputation for not liking Black players" and "Taylor was frozen out".
There is no link to the two events offered in the conversation. Taylor was Weirs signing and, generally performed like shit. He was frozen out in exactly the same way as Mark Whitey McNulty, for not being good enough for the team.
If Taylor and his mouthpieces here want to out the three players at the club (possibly Weir men, possibly prior to that) then let's get it done and name and shame. Until he has the bottle to do that then it is a pointless piece of scandal mongering not worthy of these pages and Pinchy, is well justified, in ripping the piss out of.

Mmm bit bland comments, but quite a tasty match, what with all the recent connections between our clubs. From his interview on RS, it sounds like Wilder had a lot of respect for Clough.

I can't work out whether it will be a comfortable win or we may struggle to break them down. You can bet they'll be up for it. Early goal could make all the difference.

I’m not aware that Lyle has made any claims. English justice assumes that a person is innocent of any allegations made against him or her until they are proven. Here we can’t be sure he’s made any allegations, let alone whether they are true.

Clear that Burton fans see us as cloggers given the comment about Millwall.

Not getting all big time charlie but it would be nice to continue the goal fest and stuff them by 4 or 5 to go top.

There's loads and loads of anecdotal evidence of Clough's racism though an some big signs too. He signed about 75 players for us and about 2 of them had darker skin. How many did he sign at Derby? How many has he signed for Burton? It's a bit of a coincidence isn't it. Taylor then comes out saying that it's pretty well known in the game that Clough is a racist and people all over football forums that don't know either way are jumping up to say he's lying. That's without even making a direct allegation on record, just something he said in a pub.

I'm guessing Lyle Taylor rightly sees Nigel Clough as a popular figure within the media and football with probably the most famous surname in the game. LT is still young and trying to make his way in the game, he probably doesn't want to jeopardize his career by calling out a bloke like this who has a lot of friends in the game. I imagine he'll be saving it for his autobiography when he can say these things without fear of it affecting his playing career. It's sad that he can't come out and say this, but while people like you are criticizing this, you must surely be aware that you're also the reason he can't.

The parallels between this and the ongoing sexual harrassment cases is scary.

I'm not saying he's lying, but he's provided sweet fuck all by way of proof AND added to that THREE unnamed players of the club I happen to support.
Well NAME the three and give them the chance to clear their name OR leave them the fuck alone.
It isn't at all sad, if he's got something to say I'm well up for him saying it. Best have a bit better than innuendo and muck chucking though.

Where are these parallels with the sexual harassment cases though? Just on your fevered brow? Because from what I've seen everyone who is coming forward is more than happy to name the culprits and have their day in court. What we're talking here is rumour in pub/message board. Not worth the flashing screen it's resting on.

It was gratifying though, wasn’t it, to read ‘Sheffield United won’t be easy’? You know you’ve come a long way when a Burton Albion fan says that..

Meanwhile, Lyle Taylor sits at home thinking “What the fuck? Ah’ve sed nowt...”.

He talks like that.

I should say, I despise racism. Most people who share this forum with me will know that. It’s pure unbridled, primitive hatred with no arguable justification at all. I’m loathe to label a bloke who seems, whatever you think of his managerial ability, a thoroughly decent guy (turning up unannounced at the sleep-out for example) a despicable name like that on the basis of hearsay and flimsy anecdote.

I don’t condemn or disbelieve Lyle Taylor by the way, because I don’t know what he’s said or even if he’s said anything at all. If and when he
speaks for himself I’ll listen with care.

I do, however, blame Roygbiv for starting all this...

:)

Just listening to FH right now and it sounds like Giddings doesn't fancy us at all

Some of the proof that Clough is a paid up member of the English nazi party is that he bombed out Febian Brandy - who is an all round prat anyway
