Hopefully the last summary was insightful! I listened to the pre-match press conference and summarised the key points with our AI overlords help:

Reflection on the Last Game

Selles expressed his disappointment, focusing more on the performance than the result itself. He identified a "lack of competitiveness in some of the moments" as a key concern. He acknowledged the number of unforced errors but framed them as part of a necessary learning process, stating, "I don't know if the word is concerned. I think those things happen." He believes these challenging matches are valuable experiences, concluding, "those games should make us better." A major positive from the game was Gustavo Hamer's goal, which Selles described as "a moment of brilliance" and a "genius moment."

Team News and Player Updates

  • Player Performances: Selles backed Dovydas Sasnauskas despite his errors, emphasizing that mistakes are part of development and that the young player needs support. He also showed understanding towards captain Jack Robinson's emotional reaction during the game, noting, "I think sometimes it's difficult also to to contain your emotions in in that moment."
  • New Players: He was pleased with the debut of Djibril Soumaré, describing him as an "athletic" player who can "cover the pitch."
  • Injuries: There are no new injury concerns. Selles confirmed that "everyone should be ready to go" besides the previously known absentees.

Transfer Situation: Incomings and Outgoings

This was a significant topic, with Selles expressing clear frustration.
  • Process and Delays: He was blunt about the club's recruitment efforts, stating, "our process has not been good enough. That is I think... obvious." He confirmed that following departures, the team needs five new players.
  • Immediate Prospects: Selles delivered the news that no new players will arrive before the weekend's deadline, saying, "There is not going to be any update for the weekend."
  • Recruitment Needs: He stressed the need for proven players, stating it is "absolutely" vital they are "Championship ready." The goal is to "replace that experience in the level with experience in the level."
  • Reasons for Delays: He confirmed that the lack of available Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) spots for overseas players is "a little part of it."

Outlook on the Next Game

Looking ahead to the match against Swansea City, Selles is preparing for a tough encounter. He expects "a very difficult match" against a team he described as "ultra-competitive, that never give up." The importance of a victory was not lost on him, as he stated the team will "fight with everything we have just to get that first win of the season."

Manager's Philosophy and Approach

Throughout the press conference, Selles spoke about his approach to the current challenges.

  • Expectations and Reality: He acknowledged the club's high expectations but noted that in football, "if you want to develop something in the long term, you need to win football matches now."
  • Personal Accountability: When asked if he felt let down by the transfer situation, he turned the focus on himself, saying, "I just feel that I have a task to do," and refused to make excuses that "he needs to be brilliant, and the team needs to be brilliant".
  • Tactical Flexibility: He confirmed that given the current squad, tactical adjustments are required. "Absolutely, we need to adjust for sure," he said, adding that his job is to give the players clear instructions to help them perform.

Not a happy man. Promised signings not materialised. Who is advising the board????? This is not Ice Hockey, Basketball , USA NF, there are no draft options!!!! FFS!!!

Thanks for the review mate. Interesting that he is increasingly showing his frustration. In blaming the process i guess its unclear as to whether hes blaming the lack of funds, the fact we have sold before strengthening or if in fact we have the money and have identified the targets but our internal processes aren't up to scratch.

I do like how he comes across and his ethos. The more I see of the team and him, I do think there is so much potential.

We have 16 (?) days to get some decent players in. If it happens, I am excited for what he will be able to do.

If we don't get players in, I am pleased he acknowledged you can't just stick with your values, you have to win.

one way or another I do think we will see progress from last week.

This sort of using ai I can get on with

I thought it was a good press conference to be fair. A very honest assessment and sounds like he's not going to sit back and take all the criticism of which a large portion needs to be attributed to the owners.

Also good to hear him say he's ready to adapt tactically given the currently available players. I think we can all see that's a necessity and one that should be pretty much welcomed all round.

"I need to be brilliant and my team needs to be brilliant to try to be competitive in 48 hours"

Sounds a fairly strong warning from him that he doesn't feel the team is ready

The deals to replace Souza, Anel and Moore clearly not in place unlike previous times. Soumare signed almost a month after Souza sold.

Berge sale and Souza signing were practically same day.

Illiman sale to Gus being signed was just under 2 weeks (but at least Gus was proven top champ player).

We sold Anel 9 days ago and Selles confirmed no signings before Sat. Should never have agreed to that deal unless his replacement was imminent.

I don't know what's more worrying........ we don't have deals lined up or we're trying to replace top champ players with AI/data led signings.

I genuinely like how he comes across. You can tell that he is fiercely motivated and wants to do well. With backing, I think we could have a great manager on our hands.

But if he is sent into bat with a stick of rhubarb, it will end in disaster and he will probably want to run a million miles from the place.

We'll see how it goes over the next 17 days.

Agreed he’s under pressure but that’s the job. Great presser for me.

Genuinely don’t understand the boards thinking thus far. Mind boggling.

Not a Yes man then🤔 feeling let down by his masters and telling them be it in riddles 🤔The Truth is The Board have sold him and us a duff dream of having a reyt good this season. In real terms we'll be starting on not -1 but on -12 writing.off the 1st 4 games till he gets HIS players in 🤞 I just hope the Blades fans can see this is NOT his fault but the yanks KEEP THE FAITH BLADES AND SUPPORT REUBS.

There's a clear link to previous managers, long drawn out process on acquiring targets and being slow in general in the trasnfer market. This has been the same under previous owners as well, the only person thats remained across all is Bettis.

No matter what manger or what owner, in this past decade many managers have complained about the lack of activity and it not being ideal with regards to business at the end of the window and transfer dragging, coupled with outs before ins etc.

Feels another Bettis dig but managers changed, regimes & scouting, yet hes the only one thats remained through a few.

Yes, I've wondered out loud if he is a "yes" man, but it is becoming clearer that he can and does stick up for himself. Let's hope COH listen to the manager they just appointed!

Is Carl Shieber still at United or did he leave with the change of owners?

I disagree, we have looked all over the shop for Bristol and Birmingham - could have easily lost to both by more. Not sure he knows how to organise a defence or midfield.

I agree it has looked... messy.

But against Bristol City we didn't have Soumare in, who looks like he might add some quality and presence , we were missing our only experienced CB and if we had scored some of our chances the game might have gone differently.

Against Birmingham City we started the game with a lot of second string players and players out of position. someone we actually stayed in the game.

I am an optimist, not wanting to appear happy because its not been good enough but I think there are signs it could come together.

The fact that we have taken up the full allocation of foreign players GBE’s, in the pursuit of an AI project, shows an alarming level of stupidity.
It’s almost like the owners have got all giddy about introducing the data driven recruitment that they’ve allowed themselves to be so fixated on the future, that they have totally overlooked the here and now.
Whatever the reasoning behind it, or who’s to blame, it does not bode well for the future. The huge incompetence of our whole summer transfer window business, by a supposedly intelligent and savvy group of successful entrepreneurs, is breathtaking.
Bettis, has to take responsibility too, he doesn’t have the ‘inexperience’ excuse and should have never allowed this situation to occur, without at least making his feelings known.

Yes, Bettis always strikes me as a yes man. Willing to go along with anything the owners say in order to keep looking good. Yes I will sell Anel and Souza. We have all worked with yes man and it always is these people who are the last to be ousted, in reality they are the least effective team members.

I am sticking with my stance that Wilder was ousted because he disagreed with the USA owners (they hate that!) where as a good leader will listen to someone with vast experience. Selles is now having to shout up because the yes men at the club haven't helped his cause.

Being slow to recruit can have bigger implications than losing the first 3 or 4 league games. With Selles coming under pressure and the players losing games it can cause serious friction behind the scenes that can spill over on the pitch. If the dressing room divides or the players lose faith in Selles that has long term implications. You can forgive the odd late signing. But when you know that 1 Right back an two additional centre halves are required since the window opened it smacks of disorganisation due to lack of knowledge.

Great post fella, keep it up

Some of that might be true, and yes Bettis is a yes man in as much as he has to do what the owners tell him to do, He doesn't ever sell players, just does the negotiations the owners (and sometimes manager sell players they don't want but evering back tracks to the owners

He can adapt but reality is he will be starting with six Accademy graduates in the match day squad…

Peck
Sasnauskas
Brooks
Seriki
Onè
Marsh

It’s no bed wetting to state the obvious that at championship level you can’t bring six developers through all at once.

New 100 💯 owners out of their depth for pretending to know what they are doing (ITK)….

Whist nowhere in the know It certainly looks like Wilder and the US owners fell out probably over recruitment methods and as seems increasingly likely they simply don't have the brass to improve a team which collected 92 points last season and failed to win its 11th? play off courtesy of a subjective and arguably wrong VAR decision.
Instead the team has had its defence ripped out and there is no sign yet of any replacements.

As I understand it the role of Betis is to try and ensure we sign the players he's been told we want to buy. As such he negotiates usually via agents then the club involved, transfer fee, length of contracts, bonuses/relegation clauses etc.
Surely he can only work within the budget he's been given for a player/s and as such I don't see how the fault is his.
