Did not go today thank god but I am making the trip across the hills for the cup tie at Morecombe. I am hoping that Nige has seen that .....well, you know.
So, if we have not got a couple of new defenders in by then what are the options? (apart from very limited).
Lets start with keeper and I hope with Howard being on the bench he is fit enough to replace the hapless Long. Young George needs shipping out for the season, The Conference would be about the right level for him hopefully to find out how to do the basics right. Not convinced at all by Howard but he is the better option.
I think McEverly will play with him being captain so why not at left back while Bob gets fit with K Wallace and Basham forming a new CB pairing?.
I know Basham should be in the midfield but we must address the problems at the back first.
Hope to see something like this.

Howard
Freeman K Wallace Basham McEverly
Murphy J Wallace Reed Woolford
Sammon Sharp

Theres not much protection for the back four there but we have a very large squad but no natural ball winners in there. We need a younger fitter more skilfull version of Doyle just as much as two commanding defenders IMO.
Antway, stay positive Blades it will come good eventually.

Not Howard
Maybe Freeman, Not Collins, Not Mcevs, Not Mcfadsz

No point playing Freeman as screw the cup. Rest him instead

Willis

Alcock Collins Harrison McEverley

Didn't Adkins say he didn't think the three set piece goals weren't the centre halves' fault? He also said it was an area he was looking to strengthen, but he may be sticking with Collins and McEveley until we have brought someone in.

Fuckin hell as if today wasn't embarrassing enough. They will get double figures with that back line.

it's the cup, I couldn't care less. I'd rather see if Collins and Harrison work better and if Mceverley is ok at left back, give Alcock a run out in case Freeman gets injured and try Willis out than give a crap about the score. Either that or play the U21s

I would honestly call up any centre half in the U21's that is over 6ft, or haven't we got any in there either?

He might be able to defend a set piece, which is more than any of our seniors can do.

Adkins says today's result doesn't change his team for Tuesday as he had already decided.

It will be good when Terry Kenedy is fit. He is a better, young centre half than mceverly or Collins.

If NA thinks Long is our No1 keeper we have serious problems! :)

I can't believe he could possibly be content with either option in goal. Long has the one benefit of not being injured a lot of the time.

Long has been loaned out previously to gain experience and become a better keeper but unfortunately that plan looks like it hasn't worked.
I would favour Howard at the moment until a new keeper is recruited asap.

He's not fully fit though and we all know how that went. He's got an unfortunately tendency to have niggles and knocks half the time.

I would it up a lot
Howard-hoping to get a new goalie
Freeman- best player in the defence today, did well when attacking but struggled to get back
Collins- lets just say he was better than the skipper
Basham- until we get a new CB he's our best option
mceverly- last year when he played Left back I thought he looked good
Murphy- needs a bit more of a run out, wasn't up to standard today but was still our best player at times
Reed and Wallace in midfield- see if that could be a good option.
I don't know who to play at the other Wong position even though we didn't seem to have wingers today but needed them
Sammon- looked like he could work well with sharp today. The only thing he did wrong was not challenge for the ball when I'm the box but he impressed me.
Sharp- hopefully can get a goal made a good few runs which were unseen by the other players

I agree with the goalkeeping comments. Howard was awful to end the last season and has continued to be injured even in pre season. Long went on loan but has not improve in any way and was less than impressive at both Oxford and Motherwell.

We need two centre backs and a tough tackling, no nonsense midfielder but also need a keeper badly.
