Not sure?? I remember losing 3-0 at home to Swansea when we were in the prem & they were league 1. Are you thinking of that? Apparently we've only lost in the 1st round of the league cup 3 times in 25 years

It was a good piece of business, we were lingering just inside the playoffs with him. When he went every player seemed to perform better and we 'just' missed out on automatic.

If you actually check what happened, you will see:

After we sold Beattie, we won a couple against the Norwiches and Southamptons of this world, and then fell out of the playoff places after losing to the Pigs and Doncaster.

then Blackwell dropped Sharp for a cast of thousands/4-5-1 and restored Cotterill to the side.

As if by magic, removing the striker who hadn't scored in 5 months and bringing in the only player at the club who can cross a ball resulted in an immediate improvement. Our best defensive record since 1969 also helped massively.

This improvement had nothing to do with Beattie leaving. Indeed, had he stayed, we might even have done better because he might have got games that non scoring forwards (hello Jamie Ward) were playing instead.

I hope you're right. My guess is he'll get around 5 league goals. I see various factors preventing him scoring more, such as him being ill suited to 4-5-1, his lack of physical presence, the fact that he'll have poor service, and the fact that I don't think he'll be in the first choice XI.

Oh, and on another subject, I may be wrong but I think that's United's first ever defeat at home to a fourth tier club in a league or cup match, given that we were unbeaten at home in our only season down there...

positive - less chance of injurys as less games

Before we all get too down about this lets see what happens saturday. From what I can remember didn't we lose 3-0 to L1 swansea the season we went up to the prem or was it colchester.

Completely disagree.

Mickey Mouse Cup? You get a Wembley Final ffs. Our 02/03 season "kicked off" by beating Leeds in the comp. Burnley found form during it last season.

Rest between games? Means more training which the players certainly don't prefer.

Less chance of injury? Not really, how many players (Lee Williamson) pick up injuries in training?

Add to that a loss of revenue (and don't say we don't need it) and the ability to give fringe players a game or use up a game in a ban (Jamie Ward/Lee Hendrie) and it is a useful tool.

For me you go to win every game and build momentum. Losing is a bad habit to get into.

I agree that you try and win every game but some matter more than others. I know Warnock was not fond of the league cup and with our now smaller squad do we really need the extra games and the loss of confidence of a hammering by arsenal kids.

My opinion is we are out and i'm glad.

i get to see my second team beat the piggys.....port vale played like they wanted it. Still think the draws are a bit dodgy...but hey ho

Other than that Vale didn't do too much and their keeper played a blinder. On any other day, playing like that, we'd have got 3 or 4.

Billy's goal was top drawer stuff.

Little looked really impressive and Reid did really well too. Not the finished article, but looking good.

Shame none of them will really get the chance of a decent run out now that we're out of the cup though. They'll come on as subs and the part-time supporters will get on their backs before they've even kicked a ball. Shame.
