Strikes me the comments are from knowledgeable Pompey fans who know a fair bit about us ( 3-5-2, Lafferty etc.) as well as offering honest and complimentary views on Stevens, despite him leaving. Looks a really good aquisition and Lafferty is under immediate pressure.

Manager is demonstrating he knows exactly where we need to improve.

Yet a number of times when he wasn't in the first 11, we played poorly or lost.

Lafferty is the least flashy footballer I've seen in a United shirt for a long time. What he does he does well - he's an intelligent defender so he doesn't need to be flying into tackles or making lung-busting runs to catch the winger who's skinned him, he's just often in the right place at the right time. However, on the flip side of that he's not the flashiest, he's not going to beat his man (he'll almost always look for the inside pass), he's not the quickest. He's maligned somewhat unfairly in my view but as you say - we miss him when he's not there.

Competition for places is a great thing. We didn't have any competition or backup at left back last season - hence Matty Done playing there. This is a logical signing.

Probably first choice you think? Sounds exciting already looking forward to seeing him play, watched a video highlighting his all round play and going forward he looks really good, fast and positive, looked like a winger to me, also apparently he has a long throw, something we haven't had for a long time, all positive stuff, well done Roy good read.

I think that's the point with Lafferty. Invariably, his problems last season were when he was further forward than he's accustomed to. As a pure LB, he'll be first choice. As a LWB, I'd say he's got very tough competition now...

Lafferty sured up our left hand side at a vital time. Remember the 4 matches before?

I honestly don't think there was any better left back available that we could have signed at that time.

To describe him as weak link is grossly unfair. He might not have been spectacular further up the pitch, but he wasn't brought in initially to do that anyway

Each to their own? If we're playing 3-5-2 again, he's definitely the weak link. Shocking final ball and finisher. Could have scored as many as freeman if he was up to scratch, what with the space and positioning he found himself in? In that system our wing backs are the ones who make the difference. Freeman played his part, for me it was obvious CW would replace him. Ok for back up though.

Even Ade Akinbadbuy is a 'Blades Legend' for his goal at the Stadium of Rust.

yes, him too.......well remembered...........and Dane Whitehouse too..........you would have thought his celebration for the 1st goal in the night of the yellow baloons was, just another goal.

My first "remember" was John Tudor hitting the 3rd goal through the GK's legs when we beat them 3-2 at BDTBL.......happy memories :)

Solid was the Trig contingent's view :)

Freeman was exceptional going forward, I don't think we've ever had a defender in double figures before (Kenworthy maybe with pens). Lafferty's finish at Rochdale was pretty special, didn't it win goal of the month?

Lafferty's final goal was the differnce between 98 points and 100. No criticism of his contribution from this corner.

Freeman was exceptional going forward, shakier defending. He still loses his man when the ball comes across the area. Lafferty is the opposite: very good defending, less good going forward. All the best teams have balance, you can't play with two ultra-attacking wing backs. Part of the reason Barcelona have lost their way a little over the past few years is because they replaced Eric Abidal with Jordi Alba in 2013. Don't get me wrong, they're still an exceptional team but the class of 2013 would beat the class of 2017.

Is this the equivalent of 'unseen work'? :D:eek:

No criticism of his contribution from my corner either. But now we've moved up a level, I think he's one of our weakest links, hence CW bringing in Stevens sharpish? A replacement for Moore next will show our intention for next season.

When a team gets 100 points and wins the league at a canter... there are no weak links, just good players and exceptional players.

Things may need to change a little at a higher level, so let's wait and see. We have no cover at left back. Who knows what will happen. Maybe Stevens will start but look not quite up to it defensively and Wilder will go back to Lafferty who he knows he can rely on.

I think "Michael F" lafferty will still have a role to play next season

Lafferty was more than steady and a big improvement on most of the left back we've had in the last 6 year.

That said if we want to go up, and compete well we need to look at all areas. This is someone who can add more end product potentially as well as more pace. No bad thing as we are stepping up a level.

It's seldom these days you buy a player who comes with such universal acclaim. 2 x player of the year is some going as well.

It's not as if their fans don't know a good player when they see one.

Won FA cup not so long ago and were in the PL. When they say the best in the football league, at least they speak from having seen the standard of all divisions.

Sounds like a cracking signing.
