Poppy

I didn't say owt about World War 2, fella. It really isn't about choice, not a real choice anyway. This isn't the place for that discussion though. I thought we were posting on a football message board.
So did I mate but it seems to have, as usual, digressed considerably.

Simple fact for me is the poppy is about remembering the poor buggers who died not the rights and wrongs of why they died. Each make their own decision about it though.

In other news the Mighty Blades stuff the fuck out of the cod head twats from Kingston UTMB!!!

Of course, and for the record I'd never have a problem with you or anyone else wearing a poppy. And yeah, I still can't believe how good that was yesterday. It feels like we can beat anyone right now (apart from QPR)

Unfortunately the poppy issue has become politicised and subject of virtue signalling.

Whilst not intending to offend anyone, I'm not altogether sure why football clubs feel the need to have minutes silences, especially on a date quite removed from 11th November.

Only for those who wanted that outcome. Or those of a political bent that has little or no flexibility. I'd guess most wear a poppy for the right reasons, remembering those who died in a war that virtually no one on here - excepting servicemen and women of course - will ever experience. How lucky we are.

I should clarify, I did not mean virtual signalling by individuals, I meant organisations, football clubs being an example, and the necessity that the media put on people to wear them.

By that logic, any minute's silence shouldn't happen unless whatever is being honoured happened on the day of the game.

It'd be nice if they were truthful. My ancestors didn't fight (and in one case, die) for our freedom or democracy. They died frightened and confused whilst being part of an imperial dick waving contest.

Well mine died fighting a fascist dictator who wanted to take over the fucking world so if you don’t like that fuck off to North Korea.

There's no game on November 11.

I know. My point being, why do football clubs more recently feel it necessary/desirable to hold silences so removed from the 11th?

I emphasise again, that I am not wanting to offend anyone who values these commemorative silences, I do myself when I participate, but I just think it has become a bit OTT.

Be nice to keep it to remembrance of those who died and keep fucking politics out if it. Plenty of topics in General chat for us all to pontificate about that.

In WW1? Doubtful.

Maybe you should fuck off and read a book.

Maybe you should listen when they say before all remembrance services now that they are to remember the dead of ALL wars, and I hope you’ve led a nice peaceful life at the expense of those whose memories you wish to disrespect.

By the way, I’ve read a few books as I have a Ph.D and I’ve chaired several EU committees, and I can tell you that most Germans have more respect than you do.

No, they've altered it to make out that it's about all wars now. It was originally about WW1, which is the ONLY war I've been talking about on this thread, which one would expect somebody with a Ph.D to be able to read properly.

But by all means, keep spouting your jingoistic cliches if it makes you warm and fuzzy.

With respect, why’s it matter? It’s two minutes to reflect on those brave people who gave their lives. If it delays football by two minutes, so what?

Of course it does not really matter (or should that actually be, it really does matter for the reason you say), but I can't help but feel the rush of organisations to demonstrate their respect has, to some measure, actually devalued the core purpose.

I'll nail my colours...
I'm against holding commemorations "too far" from the accepted date just because "there isn't a home game that weekend".
I'll take it to an extreme.
I support Yorkshire County Cricket Club as well as SUFC. If I wanted Yorkshire to hold a minutes silence, lay a wreath for Hedley Verity, have Poppies interwoven into the playing shirts, etc - that would have been on September 19th.
If there isn't an SUFC home match on or close to Nov 11, people can just respectfully remember the War Dead somewhere other than Bramall Lane.

The frequency of minutes silences increases every season.

Forty years ago Bert can't remember any but these days it's every other week.

We’ll be struggling to fulfil our fixtures with all this silence congestion. Perhaps we could roll up the silences and have them during England games. Frankly, I’d much prefer a 90 minute silence.

Armistice Day is once a year, for millions. Not for one individual. Something of a difference.

It just used to be 2 mins silence prior to the game and that was sufficient for 50 odd years.

No teams had poppies sewn onto their shirts or did tifo displays and nobody thought this was somehow a sign of disrespect. Now we are treated every year to the annual arms race to see who can be the ‘most respectful’.

As has been said previously the poppy seems to be about as far away from its original meaning as is possible. Watching tv tonight and cunts like Louis Walsh sat wearing poppy broaches festooned with diamonds as fashion accessory to tick the right boxes. Don’t think that was the intention in 1918.
