Who in the top league will be after Egan ? Baldock would be a squad at best for a few lower table premier league clubs.
As for JOC, no club in the top league will touch him until he is back from injury and shows the same form as he did in the first half of last season. He may not be the same player performance wise

I could easily see Egan at a number of premier league clubs like some have mentioned Newcastle, Leeds, Burnley, Palace (ageing squad) and the three promoted sides nameley Brentford who if promoted will clearly be in the market for a centre back after loaning Winston Reid.

JOC - As above to a similar degree, although his injury may make him less of an attractive proposition, we have to remember their was talk of an England call up, however realistic or not. What is interesting is that loads of people think Berge leaving is a given, but he’s been injured and proved nothing in the premier league in comparison to JOC. Price related? Our hype?

Baldock - Plenty of clubs in the premier league outside the top ten, either as a starter or on the bench. This is were you could make argument against our wage structure, in that, it’s protects our club from a financial point, but leaves our players very “gettable“ even if your only going to use them as a bit part.

Actually in your example we would only need to get through the next few rounds to recoup the spend on a 30k player. The bigger worry is that we seem to be scraping round for money after having 2 years in the prem.

It was just an off the cuff example of how wages can dwarf FA cup prize money. Many loan players also demand a loan fee.

I take your point about the wider worry. It’s clear we aren’t rolling in cash, and I guess given that, we’re preparing for life in the championship, with a view to a sustained push on promotion.

It’s anyone’s guess as to if that’s the right choice. Only much richer ownership would make these choices easier.

The style of play Bielsa plays wouldnt suit Egan and I reckon he would prefer a quick ball playing centre half. Newcastle? Maybe with Bruce in charge but will Ashley allow him the cash. Ancelotti in for Egan ?Really ?

The manager chose to go into the season with only 4 midfielders, which was never going to be enough as we have seen since one of them got injured. Quite why he allowed Freeman to go out on loan without replacing him remains a mystery. He can’t really complain though.

Davies - went to the current PL Champions
Colley - signed a new deal and stayed in Serie A
Lingard - went to a team currently in the CL spots

I'd say these were the most tipped players in this window.

I can't honestly say that we missed out. Us pushing our claim more would have not made one iota of difference.

Who did we miss out on who went elsewhere from our rivals?

West Brom -
Yoksulu, an inconsistent defensive Midfielder from La Liga mid table. Not what we needed.
Snodgrass, a 33 year old winger for a team who don't play wingers. Nope.
Diagne, no idea if he settles in UK quick enough and we have no shortage of strikers.
Maitland-Niles, another defensive player. Might have been ok but we have Ampadu. Much of a muchness.

Fulham -
Maja, we already have plenty of strikers and he last played in England in League One.

Brighton -
Caicedo, like he was ever on our radar!

Newcastle -
Willock, might have been an ok squad addition.

Personally I think if we'd gone for Reiss Nelson, without knowing a great deal about him it would have given some insurance.

We'll only feel it was a mistake if we pick up injuries this month.

If this can be avoided then we should have Stevens, Robinson, Bryan, Lowe all back fully for defensively plus Osborn to cover both defence and midfield and dare I say it, Rodwell. Already McBurnie got some minutes and Mousset is appearing on the bench. That's 8 that will shortly be in consideration. Then the following month, maybe we get Berge or O'Connell back.

So, not worth breaking the bank for and if we survive until the end of the month then we should giant some depth.

No criticism of the board from me this time.

That's too much common sense for my liking - I wanted us to buy 10 ageing at the end of their career players in the same mould as Dean Hammond ........ now he WAS a player !!!!!

I agree on a lot of that. I am sure we all saw a team that looked like shadows of themselves from the start of last year, until very recently, and I wouldn't argue that a lot of our recent signings haven't been sensational. That being said, I maintain that Mousset and McBurnie paid their way last season, because they played a huge part in keeping us up. And whilst Berge, Osborn and Bogle could have been better, they have hardly been disastrous.

I still think that we are generally well run, and assuming we do go down, will have a good go at coming straight back up. But FFS and to re-iterate, what does this now say to us all with 17 games left and a threadbare squad? The club really has now completely acquiesced, just as the team started to look half decent again.

I'm always disappointed if we don't bring a player or two in during a transfer window Stretch but, although the team is looking half decent again, it's too late to avoid the drop. I say that based on the fact that whilst we have improved lately, the other contenders have kept ticking over ( Just when Newcastle looked like they were getting dragged in, they inexplicably win at Everton).

We're going down with a more mature behind the scenes structure, a bigger stronger wage bill, higher profile and better players.
If we go back up with an further strengthened squad built around the solid base we have now, then we'll be in a better position to stay in the Premier League next time. Trying to compete with teams in the bottom 5-6 who have double our wage bill isn't something that can sustain, even with the best manager out the lot.

Agree on a lot of this. We need to build the club infrastructure up such as academy to Cat 1; training ground to state of the art, recruit a Director of Football that Wilder can work with, Scouting Dept etc so we can give ourselves every advantage.
I took the p!ss a bit about Leeds spending out on Victor Orta when in the championship but this season they have benefitted from it, recruited well in Europe and at a level above us. Their owner is richer I know but that is the model we need to get up towards.
Its noticeable that we have added two hugely respected coaches in Heckingbottom and Redfearn into the youth and womens set up. Both seem to be high quality names who have achieved in those roles before. If we keep building with the right folk and infrastructure we will keep going forward.
Our almost guaranteed relegation could be a case of 1 step back, 2 steps forward.

Even at the time the majority were confused about Freeman going purely in numbers sense. Bit us on the arse now.

I can see why people are disappointed but it's the right decision for me. We were only going to get loans and as we are already down it's just dead money. Signing a player who would be with us next season is fair enough but permanents rarely happen in January as we have seen tonight.

I agree with you Roy, but it has just struck me that flirting with loans was probably to ensure that we get over the line to 13 points. If we don't achieve that, every future report on the Blades will start with" United, the worst team ever in the history of the Premier league." I don't think I could live with that week in, week out.
