Players Who Were Great And Then............Not!

I remember watching David Frain's debut and the opposition (was it Sunderland?) couldn't touch him. "He will play for England one day", I confidently predicted. My first of many bad predictions.

My dad told me about a player who in an early game ran through about seven tackles, rounded the Keeper and scored. Then they realised he'd done all that because he couldn't pass or shoot. Steve Wigley perhaps?

Ian Rush- fucking brilliant until injuries caught up with him, well well past his best during his brief Lane spell.

Beat me to it but Rushy must win this one by a mile.

At least he gave up when he couldn't do it - take note Hammond yer greedy cunt.

It's just sad to see legends deteriorate with age. Unless you're in goal or in fantastic shape I suggest retiring at 35 at the most. Rush was what, 38 when he came on loan?

No idea how old he was but he's our best signing ever - just ten years too late.

Yes Kabba, he was especially brilliant for Grimsby and he was decent for us until his big injury. When he came back his legs looked thinner and he was rubbish.

Forgot his comeback, injured straight away if I remember.

Never let us down though, can't help injuries, Coutts and Wallace don't want to be crocks.

Always had a soft spot for Kabba, I'd imagine lots of kids at that time had him as a hero.

that they did when i started going to the games in 2002 he was one of my favorites same goes for my younger cousin who i used to go with

Peter Kachouro had an odd career:

Start of 1996-7 - mostly terrible, until he scored at Wolves

Rest of 1996-7 up to playoff final - good or very good

Playoff final and all of 1997-8 - terrible

October and November of 1998-9 - excellent, until he gets badly injured

Rest of 1998-9 after his comeback and all of 1999-2000 - bad to terrible

It's rare you see one player have such peaks and troughs in the space of a few seasons.
Him winning the 1996-97 Player of the season is still a puzzle to me

Grimsby finished bottom of the league that season but I remember them beating Burnley 6-5 in October when they had Kabba.

Because he was a class player...too good for us tbh....he was a good 30 seconds ahead of some of our players..he would make runs, wait, make another, wait and make another then see the ball whacked over his head....

and he used to sit in the pubs on london road and play chess with whoever wanted a game....

Bet he was never away from the board in the Tramway :)

we had one in the tramway??? bloody hell, must have been hidden behind the drugs, guns and knives then.....he prefered the crown or the creamhorn....

Did he used to play with Jason, the landlord at the Cremorne?

(No jokes please from those in the know :) )

Wigley scored a wonder goal on 16th Nov 1985 against Blacburn in A 3-3 draw at Bramall Lane, one if the few home matches I've missed. My son was born at exactly 3pm that Saturday afternoon

Connor Sammon. Looked brilliant against Chesterfield at beginning of last season to become one of the most useless blades players since George Long.

Miles better than Long

Simo was a huge part of us being relegated. I've always thought that if we'd had a better keeper that season we'd have survived. He was pretty awful the next season too, as evidenced by a 17 year old taking his place for a while...

As for Long, he hasn't cost us as much as Simo did, financially or football-wise.

I was born just over two years later, again on the sameday the Blades drew with Blackburn at home!

The following season we got 90 points and he was a regular. He had a rough spell and got dropped for Long. We then drew 4-4 with Exeter and Simonsen was recalled due to a joke performance from Long.
