In response to highpeakblade 's Great thread. let's flip it onto those who had a stinker and went on to sweat blood for the blades..

I'll start with paul beesley, had an absolute mare at home against sunderland (I think) walked off in tears... and never let us down ever again from that day onwards, turned out a great player for us..

I know there's a few others, so come on, lets be havvin yer... as delia would drunkenly shout...
 



Marcus Bent. Big donkey under Heath, goal machine under Warnock.

(And then we sold him, of course)

Actually two more threads here.

Legends who retained legendary status. I give you Woodward, Edwards and Deano.

Crap players who retained crap player status 75% of United players since 1976!!

Then of course there are unknown managers who became legends. Joe Mercer and John Harris and probably Dave Bassett (for effort alone)

And legendary managers who became hopeless Harry Haslam.

I think that it took much more than effort alone for Harry to get two promotions ,from the third to first division. IMO His teams were far better than long ball hoofers.
Deane and Agana hat tricks in the same game. Exciting times. There's only one Harry Bassett. One year = promotion Two years = promotion that few expected.
How long have we been in this shit hole of a league. So and remember Bassett didn't have the backing that NIGEL has. IMO Bassett made better use of what he had. and should be remembered with respect..

You could add Peters to the list of numpties and of course there is Robson and his mate Mr Kidd.
 
Ray "Razor" McHale started out getting regularly slated for iffy early performances but became a dominant midfield "gaffer" and cult hero figure for us in the early/mid-80s.
 
Anyone but booker...average clogger who ran about a lot but not much more. Never got the love for him
 
Not necessarily a bad start, but was our best player for a while in the early days of Warnock.

Paul Devlin.....the amount of abuse he used to get running down the right wing, but was clearly one of the only decent players in the side.

The days of Bobby Ford, Warnocks favourite till Monty stepped up! :)

As a footballer he was limited I agree, but the love for him was immense. He made the absolute best of the ability he had, and you cannot ask for more than that. He stuck crates of beer on away fans coaches for the long trips back home, he turned up at my house on my birthday for a cup of tea when a member of staff I knew at BDTBL told him it was my birthday FFS, and I know he did this for other kids as well on many occasions. he absoloutely loved the club, was totally humbled that he made a living from football, played a big part in the miracle survival season under Bassett. You don't have to be a great player to be a legend.

But I know numerous palyers who turned up at houses for cups of tea. My mates son broke his leg playing football and Simon Tracey turned up at his house to have tea with him to cheer him up.
Just never got the love for him, went drinking with him a couple of times, nice affable bloke but thats where it ends.

Key part of the promotion winning team in 1990. Key part of the miracle staying up team in 90/91 including scoring the goal at QPR that sealed our safety. Achieved more than many many midfielders since.

He wasn't the most technical player, but he had a big solid presence in the centre of the park and worked well in Bassett's system, he did the hard work so we got the ball out to the wingers. He was also a decent scorer from midfield and always a threat from set pieces. *edit - and he scored at the Sty :)

We could do with his sort of presence in the current team - that's for sure
 



I remember Gareth Taylor signing, and thinking he was a big useless lump up front, and it taking ages for him to score his first goal, but afterwards he turned out to be a decent player, and in the end a bit of a cult hero for a while.

It was the emergence of Michael Tonge that saw the demise of Fordy I. Forever grateful to Sir Michael for that.

He made it into the Scandinavian Blades First team......

Baxter's profile; Lee Baxter – Scottish/Swedish goalkeeper who was brought in by Neil Warnock in December 2003 during a goalkeeping crisis. Baxter impressed in training, but had a disasterous debut game against Burnley, conceding three goals by half time and being substituted at half time. Baxter never played again for the Blades, and returned to Sweden.

I'm a little scared to put this person in here because I don't want the thread derailing and turned solely into a debate on him however for me he does definitely fit into this category based solely on his ability on the pitch.

Ched Evans, Huge transfer fee from Man City however in his first season he never really hit the ground running. I think the amount of goals that he scored that season you could count on one hand? I will be honest and say that I doubted his ability and started to write him off as a complete waste of cash that season after all strikers are measured on goals and he didn't seem to know where the net was.

Well the rest is history. Debatable as to whether he simply came of age and improved or whether he simply found his level in League One and I guess we will never know now.

Anyway please don't derail Tezza1889's thread with a debate about him, just think he fits into it.

I didn't see any potential in Jags in his first few appearences. Thought he looked slow and clumsy.

Jamie Murphy was very poor up until the appointment of Nigel Clough.

I don't know if it was homesickness, or mis-management from the previous managers but when Clough came in, i expected him to be on the first train back up to Scotland when the JTW window open, and expected to wish good riddance to him.

Quite the opposite happened.

The sad thing about Murphy was that I'd seen him play so well in the Scottish Premier League against teams that were much better than what he faces in League One. This was when Rangers, Hibs and Hearts were half decent as well as Aberdeen, Dundee United and that's without even mentioning Celtic.

I was praying we wouldn't offload him when Clough came in because I knew he'd got it in his locker.
 
Jeff King was very poor in his first few matches- and his dodgy background meant he got plenty of stick for it.
He may not have gone on to be a legend- but he was a key player and his winner at Crewe sparked joyous scenes
