Players that were good but also not very good but still good sometimes

Reminds me of a lady where I used to work. Utterly useless, but had a great work image.

By great work image, she always carried around folders like she was busy and had a habit of visiting the office after work functions to send mails. Giving the impression she was working late.

This was 15 years ago, she's quite high up at the bank now.

Unfortunately I think most people will know a person who as failed upwards, its frustrating as hell!

I’m sorry but Paul Beesley is captain of the Players that Started off Average then Sometimes we’re Poor then Finished off Crap XI ...... never been a footballer.
For 3/4 of the 91/92 season Beesley and Gayle were about as solid a CH pairing as I've seen at the Lane and formed the bedrock of a side that, unless I'm mistaken, hit the highest league position of any Sheffield United side in the last 40 years. I think we hit 7th in the top flight at one point before settling for 9th. He had his nightmares for sure (Gabbiadini/Sunderland) but it's harsh to describe him as 'never a footballer' in my opinion.

I remember plenty of the 'not good' with the above two, but not so much of the 'good'.

Ifill, a big lad with a great physique but absolutely no heart.

Yeates could dribble around himself all day then finally fall over in front of a bemused opponent. His lack of end product made JCR look like David Beckham.

Yet Ifill got 9 goals and double figure assists in our promotion season... got a lot of unfair stick too for someone who played nearly every game for a team at the top of the league. Frustrating but the lad certainly had an end product.

What I recall of Paul Ifill is that he had a very promising start and looked like being an integral part of a decent side, but for some reason nosedived dramatically.

Helped take Leicester apart in the opening win and then just seemed to fade and fade. It was like he didn't want to win promotion or even be a footballer.

Well said, Beesley was a superb buy and never shirked once in his career with us. The game after Gabbiadini did him twice, we played Spurs in the cup and who was he marking? Gary Lineker no less. He did a proper job on him all night and didn't hide at all. I remember meeting him and Hodges one night and was taken by his passion for the club despite his Scouse roots.

Just looking where his goals came from on Wiki and saw this:

"The 2005–06 season was Sheffield United's twelfth straight season at the second level of the English football pyramid – a period longer than any other team currently in the Championship, and their longest spell in any Division since 1934."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005–06_Sheffield_United_F.C._season

I'm sure @silent will be along shortly to affirm it?

I remember that from the time to be fair, although it could’ve been longest spell at that level. We did very little for so long!

The longest we spent in one division between 34 and 2006 was seven years, 61-68. (Not counting the break for the war).

I know he's been mentioned, but I think David Cotterill takes the award for me. He was a match winner when Blackwell wasn't destroying his soul, but more often he ran blindly and eventually was terrified to take the ball past anyone.

I remember going to watch a pre-season friendly against Sheffield FC at the coach and horses in Dronny. Cotts took a corner, and yes it was appalling, but Blackwell absolutely destroyed him for a full 2 or 3 minutes for it. It was then I finally realised that Blackwell was a full on Two Hat, so it doesn't surprise me that Cotts was one of the most inconsistent players i've seen and why Blackwell really wasn't a very good manager.

Wasn’t that one of the reasons they made us a shitty silver plate when we finally went up in 2nd place??

Before then I don’t think anyone got anything for 2nd. Could be wrong, I often am!!

It used to frustrate me very much. But as I enter the middle phase of my extended mid life crisis, I've come to accept my mediocrity. It's quite liberating actually, I don't have to be a bellend to get up the ladder because basically, I just don't give a fuck.

I guess Clayton Donaldson will be mentioned in years to come.

If I'd been Cotts I'd have been quite tempted to say 'you take the next one then, you fat cunt'.

The criticism of Ifill at the time was ridiculous, still is now.

He got 9 goals and 10 assists from right wing, what more do you want from a winger in his first season?

Tonge also got the most assists in the division in 03-04, forgotten by most.
