Players that divide opinion

Andy "All he did was score some goals" Gray

Ben Osborn drew wildly varying opinions

John Egan ranges from "club legend" to "carried by JOC, wank apart from that"

Bogle is either the best full back in the league or the worst defender in history to a lot of people

Aaron Ramsdale's off field persona has meant some people are unwilling to give him any credit at all for improving from calamity to PotS

Reading the Oliver McBurnie threads gives the impression that the fanbase are split around 50/50 on whether to keep him/whether he's good enough for us.

I wouldn't say the fanbase are 50/50 on McBurnie, it's mostly just one guy who doesn't post about anyone else who doesn't want him

I'm the opposite with Ramsdale - admittedly I thought he was a twat for that stupid interview once he left us but his off field stuff since is the reason I don't dislike him any more.

He's just a bit of a Dweeb. He got all excited that he was on a podcast and said what he thought the bigger boys would like

No reason to dislike him. As a fellow socially awkward Dweeb I get his schtick

Yeah Gannon was a wired one.. never could put a finger on what he did , but the stats showed we always seemed to get better results when he was in the team
What he did was to have minimum touches and get the ball between full backs and centre halfs as quickly as possible. Enabling the running power of Deane,Agana,Wood,Roberts and Bryson etc to get behind defenders. Which they did fantastically. Passing to feet is not the only pass.

Take any player and opinion differs.
We tend to take to players who are all effort and put a shift in . I'm think the ones that divide opinion tend to be those who rely on skill over effort , or make it look that way . Even King Keith used to get criticism for being lazy and only scoring goals . Others that come to mind are John Mathew's, Glynn Hodges , Kevin Arnott . All depends what we like to see in a player. Never fails to surprise me post match pint that sometimes the same player is Man of the match to one and had a stinker to others. Always be like that , hope so anyway.

Andy Gray was the one I never understood. Some supporters really didn’t like him, even though he scored every other week. Literally did the one thing you want a striker to do the most…scored goals.

I even heard criticism of “well he scores goals but he doesn’t offer much else.”

🤔 If only we could have found someone that could do everything BUT score.

Was not a fan of his until he scored against Wolves during the Basset 3rd division promotion year. Loved him after that. It only takes one moment.

John Flynn

Really?

Throughout his career with us , I don’t remember anyone I knew or ever spoke to having anything but good to say about him .

He was always calm , assured , strong in the tackle, good in the air and the perfect foil for Eddie Colquhoun who would often push forward to try to snuff out a dangerous attack knowing that his mate was there to back him up if he didn’t succeed .

There is no doubt in my mind that John Flynn was one of the best value for money signings we ever made and if he was with us today playing in the centre of a back four which we appear to be favouring , he would stand head and shoulders above any of our current players who are called upon to play in that role , often with disastrous consequences .

McGoldrick? Didn’t score much, especially not in prem. He’ll always have respect in these parts, at least from me.

Our joint 4th all time top scorer in the Premier League.

15 Deane
13 McBurnie
11 Littlejohn
10 McGoldrick
10 Whitehouse

There seemed to be a major hate on for Keith Curle, but I thought he was decent for us.

10 goals in 2 seasons is not very good. His last season in the premiership though, when we originally went down, he did alright goal scoring wise.

My point is that McGoldrick was a great player even without the ability to score at a freakish rate. His work rate and off the ball skills are among the best I’ve ever seen at this club.

Michael Doyle, anyone with any kind of understanding as to what makes a professional footballer could see he was a non-tackling, finger pointing tosser who should have been charged under trade descriptions violations.

Some of our fans thought he was a “great servant”.

Not fit to lace Monty’s boots.

Carl Asaba

Nathan Blake

Excitement levels of the signings leading to perennial arguments over relative success levels

I love Mcburnie. His record with Wilder as manager is much better too. He seems to really get the most out of his goals wise.

Think Wilder likes a target man seen as though we may now have 2. Be good to see him play tonight.

Agree, he was a fantastic signing and alongside Colquhoun a great partnership

I agree a very good vfm signing but I didn’t always feel confident in him . I thought he was the weakest link in that defence at the time . Not saying he wasn’t a good servant and steady , he was . But the question was which players divided opinion and our two views back that up .

I also felt the same about Micky Speight

Couldn’t agree more, look at Erling Haaland he’s the epitome of ‘doesn’t do owt else but score’ and he’s not too bad is he!

(Not saying Andy Gray was remotely comparable in terms of quality to Haaland)

I was quite confused reading this at first, thinking I don’t remember Flynn having any of these qualities…

Then I realised I was remembering Ryan Flynn…

As you were.

Danny Cadamarteri

Used to love watching him cut in off the left wing and rifle one off the woodwork. Seemed to do happen so regularly.

Biggest opinion splitter in my lifetime has been Sander Berge. I thought he was class, such an elegant player.
Went missing a lot though and lots of our fans couldn't see past that.
